Microsoft to fix first critical hole in Windows 7 on Tuesday

Microsoft confirmed on Wednesday that the company plans to push out a security fix for a critical security hole in Windows 7 next Tuesday. Microsoft officials posted an advanced security bulletin today that confirms Windows XP will have 6 critical holes patched, Windows Vista 5 critical holes and Windows 7 only one. Microsoft's critical rating is the highest out of all definitions used by the company, described as "a vulnerability whose exploitation could allow the propagation of an Internet worm without user action." Microsoft will ship a total of 13 updates on Tuesday, eight of them marked as critical. Previously the company released a record of 12 updates in both February 2007 and October 2008.

After fixing the MP3 corruption issue in the Windows 7 beta and sending it out via Automatic Updates, Microsoft has released another fix specifically for the Windows Media Center in the beta. The fix is currently only available via the Microsoft Download Center in 32-bit (425 KB ) and 64-bit (411 KB ) flavors. It hasn't been sent out via Windows Update because it is only meant for users experiencing a specific problem described in KB Article 962236...

Microsoft posts two major Vista fix packs for download

Remember those Windows Vista reliability and performance fix packs beta versions of which temporarily escaped to the masses last week? On August 7, Microsoft posted the final versions of the two Vista fix packs for download.



The Vista performance fix pack, KB 938979, (both 32- and 64-bit versions) is downloadable here. The reliability fix pack, KB 938194, (32- and 64-bit flavors), can be downloaded here.



The two fix packs include a number of the updates that Microsoft is expected to deliver in the first full-fledged Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 release, a public beta of which is expected real soon now. SP1 is expected to include a number of security, performance and reliability fixes that Microsoft has been delivering since it shipped Vista, all in one single package.



Microsoft is promising to make the two new Vista fix packs available via Windows Update at a later date. The full statement, provided by a Microsoft spokeswoman:



The two updates will be available on Microsofts download center today, and will be available through Windows Update at a later date.

No fix for data corruption bug in Windows Home Server

Two months after acknowledging a serious data corruption bug exists in Windows Home Server, Microsoft has admitted it still has no fix. The latest update to its knowledgebase entry essentially says, "still workin' on it". The bug relates to a little known, but frequently used, method of writing hidden data to NTFS file systems, which is incompatible with the disk pooling strategy used in Home Server.

The software giant first acknowledged the problem on December 21 last year, providing a list of programs that could cause data on a Windows Home Server to become corrupted, including Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, OneNote 2007, OneNote 2003, Outlook 2007, Money 2007, SyncToy 2.0 beta, QuickBooks and uTorrent.
