Microsoft is set to announce general availability of the free online component of Office on Tuesday.

Microsoft Office Live Workspace lets users access and share Office documents online. It first became available in December when Microsoft opened a limited beta version of the service.

With the broad availability of Workspace, Microsoft has also rolled out some updates, which became available late last week. Workspace now features an activity panel that shows users a stream of activity on the page, including noting files that have been added or deleted.

Apple/Microsoft in talks for ActiveSync before iPhone launched

Exchange support in the iPhone has been rumored almost as long as the iPhone itself was rumored to exist. Much as the iPhone turned out to be real, so has ActiveSync on the iPhone. Microsoft released an interview with Terry Myerson, corporate vice president for Exchange, which includes a very interesting tidbit. Mr. Myserson says that Apple and Microsoft were in talks about licensing ActiveSync before the iPhone was announced. Furthermore, he was in daily contact with Apple VP Phil Schiller (when Schiller wasn't making up Apple rumors, of course) for two weeks while they set the details of the agreement between the two tech giants.

Microsoft claims European antitrust issues are past

Microsoft's efforts to better detail how its products work should keep it out of further legal trouble, despite a record fine levied by the European Commission last week, CEO Steve Ballmer said Monday.

"Essentially what we are permitting is more innovation around our products, more interoperability, maybe also more potential for third parties to cannibalize what could have been Microsoft business, but it's a path that we commit ourselves to because it's good for customers, and it's consistent with our legal obligation," Ballmer said at the Cebit trade show in Hanover, Germany.

Microsoft officially 425 years behind the times

It's official: Microsoft is exactly four hundred and twenty-five years behind the times.

It's not just Excel and Exchange that ignore the Gregorian calendar. The Reg has also confirmed that SQL Server 2008, Windows Small Business Server, and Windows Mobile are ignorant as well.

In the wake of our story about Exchange 2007 failing to realize that February 29 is a real day, one astute Reg reader pointed out that Microsoft has no excuse for allowing its software to behave this way. "The rules of the Gregorian calendar aren't really that difficult to grasp," said someone called MacroRodent. "They are not trade secrets. And they have been available for centuries."

Keith Dawson: Steven Noonan sends us to a page where he is collecting and updating results for various browsers on the newly released Acid 3 test. No browser yet scores 100 on this test. (We discussed Acid 3 when it came out.) He writes, "It's not surprising that Internet Explorer is losing to every other modern browser, but how did IE 5.5 beat IE 6.0 and 7.0?" All of the IE versions score below 20 on Acid 3.

Microsoft to host partner software

Microsoft will soon detail ways that partner companies will be able to deliver their services based on Microsoft's hosted services, the software company said on Tuesday.

When Microsoft earlier this year announced that it will host its Exchange and SharePoint software for businesses of any size, some third-party software providers wondered about their futures. Companies that offer software that runs on SharePoint, for example, were worried that they wouldn't be able to offer products to customers of Microsoft's hosted service.

But on Tuesday, Microsoft said that it plans to host third-party applications for partner companies so that customers of its hosted services can use those applications.

IE 5.5 beats IE 6.0 and 7.0 on Acid 3?

Slashdot has written an interesting detail on the new Acid browser test. It seems like, according to the results compiled in this page, Internet Explorer 5.5 beats 6.0 and 7.0 on Acid3.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops standards for Internet applications. For example, XHTML, HTML, CSS, etc. Acid 3 basically takes a lot of W3C’s newer standards and tests to be sure that the browser supports the features it should and that it behaves as it should when using them. Acid 3 is a suite of 100 different tests to be sure that these standards are being met.
