Firefox 2 will be
based on continued development
of the Gecko 1.8 branch
created for Firefox 1.5. The
goal is that Firefox 1.5 and 2
are compatible from a web
developer's point of view.
The final build of 2.0 is

06.10.2006Microsoft's IE 7 May Beat Mozilla's Firefox 2.0 To Market
Mozilla Corp. has released
Firefox 2.0 Release Candidate
2 (RC2), but may be beat in
the race to final by
Microsoft, which said that
Internet Explorer 7 would ship
in October.
Firefox
2.0 RC2 went live late Friday,
with the update pushed
automatically to users of
earlier editions of Firefox
2.0, the open-source
browser's first major update
since 1.5 in November 2005.
Others can download RC2 in
versions for Windows, Mac OS
X, and Linux in 39 localized
editions, including ones for
Arabic, Chinese, Dutch,
Mongolian, Russian, and
Slovakian speakers.
However, at least one more
release candidate will be
issued by Mozilla. "There are
a handful of security and
stability bugs we'd like to
see get in before the final
FF2 release. Thus we'll be
doing a third release
candidate," wrote Mike
Schroepfer, Mozilla's
director of engineering, in an
entry on the developer's
message forum.
But
while Mozilla has not set a
final release date for Firefox
2.0 -- on this calendar, it
was once pegged to late
October, but was withdrawn
weeks ago -- rival Microsoft
said that it will ship IE 7,
the first significant upgrade
to its browser since 2001,
this month.

05.10.2006Mozilla Officially Releases Firefox 2.0 RC2
On Saturday Mozilla officially
released RC2 of Firefox 2.0,
Neowin
originally
reported the release a day
earlier on Friday the 6th.
Mozilla Firefox, the
popular web browser, caused a
stir with the original
release, but apart from minor
changes, visual improvements
and security fixes, there
haven't been a wide range of
new features since the
original 1.x release. This is
all about to change, with the
forthcoming release of Firefox
2.0, planned for
October/November 2006.
This is Release
Candidate 2 and the second
public preview of Firefox 2.0,
along with a snapshot of the
forthcoming new features. It
must be noted that this is
only a beta and should be used
for testing-purposes only.
Many of the existing themes
and extensions are not
operating within this beta
release.
Current
new 2.0 features include
anti-phishing support, useful
for acknowledging the
difference between a
legitimate website and a fake
site set up for the purposes
of obtaining your personal
information.

09.10.2006Mozilla provides more details on Firefox 3.0 RC2
The festivities began yesterday -- two days ahead of schedule -- with the publication by Mozilla of a package that ended up being
confirmed as Release Candidate 2 of its Firefox 3.0 Web browser. The final release certainly appears on schedule for "mid-June,"
which is true to what the organization has promised users for several weeks.
Thus far, BetaNews tests have shown RC2 to be mostly
solid. We noticed the absence in the new custom installation option of DOM Inspector, a tool developers use to look into the code for a page's
Document Object Model (for pages that use DOM). There's a good reason for that, as
confirmed this morning in Mozilla's release notes: DOM
Inspector was separated from the 3.0 code base, and is now available as a free add-on.

04.06.2008Windows Vista RC2 This Friday
Thanks to Paul Thurrott for
the details:
Microsoft this Friday will
ship the final pre-release
version of Windows Vista and,
unexpectedly, will name the
release as Release Candidate 2
(RC2). Previously, Microsoft
had publicly asserted that it
would not ship an RC2
milestone release of Windows
Vista. But don't let the name
fool you: RC2 is really just a
standard interim build of
Vista and will not be given
out to millions of users as
was RC1.
The RC2
build is 5743, and Microsoft
is currently testing it
internally. As with the
previous interim build, 5728,
RC2 will be given out to beta
testers, MSDN and TechNet
subscribers, and a random,
limited selection of Consumer
Preview Program (CPP) members.

pulled the download,
confounding many users who
were hoping to get the last
public prerelease version of
the product.
But
despite rumors of problems,
Microsoft says its removal of
RC2 was all part of the
plan.
"Windows
Vista RC2 was an interim
release distributed for the
purposes of final testing by a
limited audience," a
Microsoft representative told
me late yesterday. "Once that
limit was reached and the
necessary feedback was
collected from the CPP
audience, Microsoft closed the
site. For now, Windows Vista
RC1 remains the primary
version for distribution and
ongoing use."

Mozilla Corp. has identified 10 high-priority bugs in
Firefox 3.0 — three of them pegged
critical — but it won't decide until next week whether to release the browser anyway or restart the final stretch by issuing a second release
candidate.

,"
Mike Schroepfer,

Mozilla has not yet committed to RC2. Previously, the company only said it is targeting June as the release window for the final code.

Firefox 3.5 benchmarked, not as fast as Chrome
The results are in from benchmarks of Firefox 3.5, performed by ZDNet. The benchmarks test all the main browsers from Google Chrome 2.0.172.33,
Safari 4, Firefox 3.5, Firefox 3.0.5, Opera 10 Alpha and Internet Explorer 8. Each browser was put through three tests including SunSpider
javascript benchmark, V8 Benchmark Suite and finally the ACID 3 test. Firefox 3.5 was built for speed and performance, compared to previous
versions of Firefox. Firefox 3.5 performed better than Firefox 3.0.5 and Internet Explorer 8 in all three categories. From the graphs, it is clear
to see that Google Chrome performed the best overall, followed shortly by Safari 4 and then Firefox 3.5.

Mozilla postpones Firefox 2 fix
Mozilla will delay the next
security update for Firefox so
it can test a fix for a flaw
that could be used by
attackers by skirt security
restrictions.
The
flaw, disclosed by Polish
researcher Michal Zalewski on
the Full
Disclosure security
mailing list, could let a
malicious site manipulate the
authentication cookies for
other sites' pages. It is
present in the most recent
version of the open-source
browser, 2.0.0.1.
According to Zalewski, the
bug might allow hackers to
"tamper with the way these
sites are
displayed or how they
work."
Mozilla
developers jumped on the bug
and produced a fix by the next
day. However, adding the patch
to the Firefox 2.0.0.2 and
1.5.0.10 updates, which are
still under development, will
require more work. "We had to

Firefox 3 Beta 4 review
Percy Cabello: Firefox 3 Beta 4 is about to be released (later today or tomorrow), as the twelfth milestone, in what already is the longest
development time for a Firefox version since the initial Firefox 1.0 back in 2004.
Fortunately, Mozilla has not been shy to set
as many milestones as needed, and given the many new features and tweaks Firefox 3 introduces, it seems anything but sensible, specially considering
its not only about Firefox but Gecko, the web page rendering engine and the Mozilla platform as a whole which affects the many products based on
it.
