Vista puts Mac OS X font rendering to shame

One of the first things I noticed when I switched to Windows Vista earlier this year was how much of an improvement in font readability Vista has over earlier versions of Windows for the screen fonts.

New UI Font Coming to Vista, Office 12

With the release of a new user interface in Windows Vista and Office 12, Microsoft will also update the font that both products use for the first time in eight years. The company says the new font is designed to take advantage of ClearType, and is more modern than its predecessors.

Dubbed "Segoe UI," the font is more humanistic and less computer-like than it's predecessor, Tahoma. Microsoft also relied on a decade of research from its Typography unit on making fonts easier to read and scan on screen.

Best Firefox extensions

When you ask most people what Web browser they use, the answer often will be Internet Explorer. After all, it comes preloaded on Windows PCs, so most people just use it by default.

But while IE maintains a stranglehold on the majority of computer systems, Mozilla's open-source solution, called Firefox, has made significant inroads into the browser market. Handy extra features are part of the reason for its growing success, as is the continual supply of third-party add-ons.

Firefox 3 gets full-page zoom

The much-anticipated page zoom feature has finally landed in Firefox 3 nightly builds. Firefox 3 will now be able to zoom the entire page, including images as well as text, just like Opera and IE 7.

The page zoom feature request was originally filed in Bugzilla in 1999, but implementation was delayed because it wasn't considered practical in Gecko 1.8, the current version of Firefox's HTML rendering engine. Scheduled for inclusion in Firefox 3, the new version of the rendering engineGecko 1.9leverages the open source Cairo vector graphics rendering framework and includes a number of extremely significant improvements to layout and rendering. The page zoom feature was implemented as part of the Gecko overhaul and will now be included in Firefox 3.

Although the page zoom feature is fully implemented, the user interface doesn't expose the page zoom functionality to the end user yet. Until menu items, toolbar buttons, or keyboard shortcuts are added to facilitate access to the page zoom feature, most users probably won't be able to make much use of the new feature.

Firefox 3 Beta 4 review

Percy Cabello: Firefox 3 Beta 4 is about to be released (later today or tomorrow), as the twelfth milestone, in what already is the longest development time for a Firefox version since the initial Firefox 1.0 back in 2004.

Fortunately, Mozilla has not been shy to set as many milestones as needed, and given the many new features and tweaks Firefox 3 introduces, it seems anything but sensible, specially considering its not only about Firefox but Gecko, the web page rendering engine and the Mozilla platform as a whole which affects the many products based on it.

More Intel "Tigerton" Demonstrations

It has been reported that Intel's server platform, Caneland, features a point-to-point connection between chipsets and processors. This new feature allows the processors to be grouped together. In the Caneland system, four Tigertron processors are installed for a total of sixteen cores.

Supporting the four Tigerton processors is Intel's upcoming Clarksboro chipset. The upcoming chipset appears to dissipate plenty of heat and is shown with a fairly large all copper active cooled heat sink. Intel also demonstrated the performance of its Caneland system with POV-Ray Raytracing Rendering tests. The benchmark showed Tigerton delivering performance improvements greater than 16 times with the multi-threaded benchmark compared to the single-thread benchmark.

It is unknown what the system configuration and clock speeds of the demo systems were. Nevertheless, Tigerton lives and is expected next year.

Firefox Reaches Five, Tops Vulnerabilities List

This week marks five years since the public release of Mozilla Firefox 1.0. First available in beta form as "Phoenix" the browser was an open-source evolution of the rendering framework designed for Netscape Communicator and extended with the Mozilla Suite; an all-in-one web communications package that failed to gain the mindshare developers had hoped for. The idea behind Firefox was to create a browsing experience that was faster, more user friendly, and more standards compliant in comparison to Internet Explorer, which had seen few improvements in quality or feature changes since it had become a de facto monopoly within the segment.

Mozilla CEO speaks out on future of Firefox

APC Magazine in Australia has posted an 8,000 word interview with Mozilla CEO Mitchell Baker about where Firefox came from and where it's going. Baker talks about putting Firefox on mobile phones and pocket devices; plans to get into open source graphic and video rendering to compete with Flash and Silverlight; where the $55million a year Firefox earns comes from; the struggle with patents in the software industry; why many more businesses are recontemplating moving to Firefox rather than dealing with the upgrade to IE7, and why Mozilla hasn't yet built an ad-blocker into Firefox. She also talks about how Firefox 3.0 will have a lot more capability around "branding" - will it be the corporate visual theming disaster that was IE4? And how Mozilla's small development office in New Zealand is developing the ability to run web abbs in Firefox without an internet connection. And a cartoon character, "Foxkeh" that has been created to make Firefox more approachable in the Japanese market.

A First Look at Mozilla Firefox 3.0

ArsTechnica< /a> have posted an in-depth look at Mozilla's new project, Firefox 3.0. The significant jump from 2.0, released a mere 2 months ago is mainly due to Mozilla's use of the new Gecko rendering engine.

Mozilla has officially
released the first public alpha build of Firefox 3.0. Codenamed Gran Paradiso, Firefox 3 includes the new Gecko 1.9 rendering engine which leverages the open-source Cairo rendering framework and features heavily re factored re flow algorithms that improve Firefox layout functionality and resolve some long-standing CSS bugs.

The re flow improvements in Gecko 1.9 (included in the latest Gran Paradiso nightly build, but not the alpha release) finally enable Firefox to pass the Acid 2 test, a CSS test case developed by the Web Standards Project to illuminate flaws in HTML/CSS rendering engines. To pass the Acid 2 test, browsers must comply with W3C standards and provide support for a wide variety of features that are considered relevant by Web designers. The Acid 2 test has been passed by several other browsers, including Safari, Konqueror, and Opera, but not Internet Explorer. Passing Acid 2 is considered to be a significant milestone in Firefox development.

Lunascape Is Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer Rolled Into One

Free application Lunascape is a web browser capable of running any of the three major web rendering enginesGecko (Firefox), WebKit (Safari/Chrome), and Trident (Internet Explorer). That means that each time you open a new tab or follow a link, you can tell Lunascape which engine you want to use to render the page. The idea, in theory, is that Lunascape gives you the benefits of each popular browser in one. For example, Lunascape gives you IE support for the few IE-only sites still out there and no-nonsense speed from WebKit or Gecko.

Mozilla scrambles to patch Firefox for second time this week

Mozilla Corp. will probably release a Firefox update tomorrow to patch a bug in the just-released 2.0.0.10 version, according to the company's bug database.

If so, it would mark the first time that Mozilla has released two versions of the open-source browser in the same week.

A bug in rendering "canvas" HTML elements worked its way into Firefox 2.0.0.10, the edition Mozilla released Monday to fix six other vulnerabilities. Canvas elements, which were first used by Apple Inc. in its Safari browser, let Web site designers dynamically render bitmap images in HTML. Firefox, Safari and Opera support Canvas natively; Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer does so with a plug-in.

ArchLord Goes Free To Play (With a catch though)

Thanks to Bluesnews for the scoop.

ArchLord, the MMORPG from Codemasters which almost across the board got horrible reviews, will go "Free To Play" starting January 4th, 2007. But there is a catch - you still have to buy the game. Now normally, like in the case of Guild Wars that isn't such a big deal - right? Well in ArchLords case, I think the reviews of the game speak for themselves pretty well. I'm not trying to badmouth the game, in fact I was probably one of the only beta testers who had some fun playing the game. But who am I to argue this, I mean heck it is going to be free to play once you buy the game now, so kudos to Codemasters there I suppose. Here is the Codemasters little press blurb on the move to Free To Play for ArchLord:

Codemasters Online Gaming is pleased to announce that ArchLord will be going Free To Play on January 4 2007.

ArchLord will continue to be fully supported, including the second fantastic update Episode II: Season of Siege. However, players will now be able to access all this great content simply by buying the box; after that it's free!

Over the next few days all those playing ArchLord will be receiving emails updating them of the changes and how they will be affected. Visit the website at www.archlordgame.com /freetoplay to find out more information on how the changes affect you.

If you want to discuss ArchLord going free to play, or anything else to do with ArchLord be sure to visit the forums. http://community.cod emasters.com/forum/forumdispla y.php?f=336

That's right, ArchLord now has no monthly fee. Buy the game and that's it! Get out there and buy a box and be prepared to take part in some mass PvP action.

So there you have it, ArchLord goes free in a short few weeks here, and hopefully they will get some more players now. I always hate to see an MMORPG fail, and ArchLord is no different in that regard. Who knows, maybe some of you will give it a shot!

Firefox version 3 makes beta

Version 3 of Firefox, the alternative web browser of choice, is now available to download for its first beta test.

After 27 months of hard work the Gecko 1.9 rendering engine has been integrated, and the development team is feeling ready to share its project with the world.

Version 3 has improved security features to combat phishing and communicate with anti-virus software, as well as respecting parental-control settings such as those used by Windows Vista. Better zooming and tab controls, and tweaks such as offering to save tabs on closing and use of the Mac OS X spellchecker, are also included.

Why Mozilla is committed to Gecko as WebKit popularity grows

In the wake of Google's release of the new WebKit-based Chrome browser, some technology enthusiasts are beginning to wonder if the days are numbered for Mozilla's Gecko rendering engine. Despite the growing popularity of WebKit, those who understand the differences between the two rendering engines and have an appreciation of Gecko's technical strengths, recognize that there is no basis for speculation about the possibility of Mozilla adopting it for future versions of Firefox.
