Vista puts Mac OS X font rendering to shame
One of the first things I noticed when I switched to Windows Vista earlier this year was how much of an improvement in font readability Vista has over earlier versions of Windows for the screen fonts.

New UI Font Coming to Vista, Office 12
With the release of a new user interface in Windows Vista and Office 12, Microsoft will also update the font that both products use for the first time in eight years. The company says the new font is designed to take advantage of ClearType, and is more modern than its predecessors.
Dubbed "Segoe UI," the font is more humanistic and less computer-like than it's predecessor, Tahoma. Microsoft also relied on a decade of research from its Typography unit on making fonts easier to read and scan on screen.

Best Firefox extensions
When you ask most people what Web browser they use, the answer often will be Internet Explorer. After all, it comes preloaded on Windows PCs, so most people just use it by default.
But while IE maintains a stranglehold on the majority of computer systems, Mozilla's open-source solution, called Firefox, has made significant inroads into the browser market. Handy extra features are part of the reason for its growing success, as is the continual supply of third-party add-ons.

18.5.2008Firefox 3 gets full-page zoom
The much-anticipated page zoom
feature has finally landed in
Firefox 3
nightly builds. Firefox 3
will now be able to zoom the
entire page, including images
as well as text, just like
Opera and IE 7.
The page zoom feature
request was originally filed
in Bugzilla in 1999, but
implementation was delayed
because it wasn't considered
practical in Gecko 1.8, the
current version of Firefox's
HTML rendering engine.
Scheduled for inclusion in
Firefox 3, the new version of
the rendering engineGecko
1.9leverages the open source
Cairo vector graphics
rendering framework and
includes a number of extremely
significant improvements to
layout and rendering. The page
zoom feature was implemented
as part of the Gecko overhaul
and will now be included in
Firefox 3.
Although the page zoom
feature is fully implemented,
the user interface doesn't
expose the page zoom
functionality to the end user
yet. Until menu items, toolbar
buttons, or keyboard shortcuts
are added to facilitate access
to the page zoom feature, most
users probably won't be able
to make much use of the new
feature.

Fortunately, Mozilla has not been shy to set

Firefox Reaches Five, Tops Vulnerabilities List
This week marks five years since the public release of Mozilla Firefox 1.0. First available in beta form as "Phoenix" the browser was an open-source
evolution of the rendering framework designed for Netscape Communicator and extended with the Mozilla Suite; an all-in-one web communications package
that failed to gain the mindshare developers had hoped for. The idea behind Firefox was to create a browsing experience that was faster, more user
friendly, and more standards compliant in comparison to Internet Explorer, which had seen few improvements in quality or feature changes since it had
become a de facto monopoly within the segment.

A First Look at Mozilla Firefox 3.0
ArsTechnica<
/a> have posted an in-depth
look at Mozilla's new
project, Firefox 3.0. The
significant jump from 2.0,
released a mere 2 months ago
is mainly due to Mozilla's
use of the new Gecko rendering
engine.
Mozilla has
officially released
the first public alpha build
of Firefox 3.0. Codenamed Gran
Paradiso, Firefox 3 includes
the new Gecko
1.9 rendering engine which
leverages the open-source
Cairo rendering framework and
features heavily re
factored re flow
algorithms that improve
Firefox layout functionality
and resolve some long-standing
CSS bugs.
The re
flow improvements in Gecko 1.9
(included in the latest Gran
Paradiso nightly build, but
not the alpha release) finally
enable Firefox to pass the
Acid 2 test, a CSS test case
developed by the Web Standards
Project to illuminate flaws in
HTML/CSS rendering engines. To
pass the Acid 2 test, browsers
must comply with W3C standards
and provide support for a wide
variety of features that are
considered relevant by Web
designers. The Acid 2 test has
been passed by several other
browsers, including Safari,
Konqueror, and Opera, but not
Internet Explorer. Passing
Acid 2 is considered to be a
significant milestone in
Firefox development.

Lunascape Is Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer Rolled Into One
Free application Lunascape is a web browser capable of running any of the three major web

Mozilla scrambles to patch Firefox for second time this week
Mozilla Corp. will probably release a Firefox update tomorrow to patch a bug in the just-released 2.0.0.10 version, according to the company's bug
database.
If so, it would mark the first time that Mozilla has released two versions of the open-source browser in the same

A bug in rendering "canvas" HTML elements worked its way into Firefox 2.0.0.10, the edition Mozilla released Monday to
fix six other vulnerabilities. Canvas elements, which were first used by Apple Inc. in its Safari browser, let Web site designers dynamically render
bitmap images in HTML. Firefox, Safari and Opera support Canvas natively; Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer does so with a plug-in.

ArchLord Goes Free To Play (With a catch though)
Thanks to Bluesnews for the
scoop.
ArchLord,
the MMORPG from Codemasters
which almost across the board
got horrible reviews, will go
"Free To Play" starting
January 4th, 2007. But there
is a catch - you still have to
buy the game. Now normally,
like in the case of Guild Wars
that isn't such a big deal -
right? Well in ArchLords case,
I think the reviews of the
game speak for themselves
pretty well. I'm not trying
to badmouth the game, in fact
I was probably one of the only
beta testers who had some fun
playing the game. But who am I
to argue this, I mean heck it
is going to be free to play
once you buy the game now, so
kudos to Codemasters there I
suppose. Here is the
Codemasters little press blurb
on the move to Free To Play
for ArchLord:
Codemasters Online
Gaming is pleased to announce
that ArchLord will be going
Free To Play on January 4
2007.
ArchLord
will continue to be fully
supported, including the
second fantastic update
Episode II: Season of Siege.
However, players will now be
able to access all this great
content simply by buying the
box; after that it's free!
Over the next few
days all those playing
ArchLord will be receiving
emails updating them of the
changes and how they will be
affected. Visit the website at
www.archlordgame.com
/freetoplay
to find out more information
on how the changes affect you.
If you want to
discuss ArchLord going free to
play, or anything else to do
with ArchLord be sure to
visit the forums. http://community.cod

That's right,
ArchLord now has no monthly
fee. Buy the game and that's
it! Get out there and buy a
box and be prepared to take
part in some mass PvP
action.
So there you
have it, ArchLord goes free in
a short few weeks here, and
hopefully they will get some
more players now. I always
hate to see an MMORPG fail,
and ArchLord is no different
in that regard. Who knows,
maybe some of you will give it
a shot!
