How to Share Large File on The Web Using MegaUpload

The following tutorial will explain you how to share a large file on the web between you and your friend or anyone else. I'm choosing MegaUpload as an example here - not for any particular reason - but later, I might write more tutorial for other large file sharing service, such as YouSendIt and RapidShare.

One of the most advantage of using MegaUpload, compare with other similar service, is the duration how long your file(s) will be kept in their server. Your uploaded files will be deleted only after it become unused for 30 days. So, if many of your friends download it, over and over again, the files will always be there. The size is quite big, up to 250MB. Not as big as YouSendIt which allow up to 1GB file size, but it's more than enough to share your music files, movies, etc.

WinZip 11.0 Released

WinZip 11.0 includes features that build on the solid foundation established with WinZip 10.0. We applied user feedback to help improve the Job Wizard, and added a number of compression and usability enhancements, as well as the ability to open .BZ2 and .RAR files.

Like WinZip 10.0, you can select WinZip 11.0 with Standard or Pro features, and both offer compression enhancements that make WinZip 11.0 the most versatile WinZip ever. Our new "best compression" option allows you to let WinZip decide the best compression method for each file based on the file type. This will ensure that you maximize the compression of every file that you add to your Zip file. WinZip 11.0 also allows you to better zip .wav music files without compromising the integrity of the file or its sound quality. What's more, if you need to open a .BZ2 or .RAR file, WinZip can now be your tool of choice.

If you depend on WinZip Pro's Job Wizard to back up data sets, archive important documents, or distribute information to others on a regular basis, you'll appreciate the enhancements available in WinZip 11.0 Pro. Now you can configure the Job Wizard to email the log file and/or resulting Zip file automatically after completion, use our new "browse" feature to find a specific folder on an FTP server, and select custom jobs directly from the Job Wizard and Quick Pick menus.

Office 2003 SP3: Are new formats more secure?

Blocking old file formats in the Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) release was meant to bolster security for Microsoft customers, but whether the new formats are any more secure than older ones is debatable.

Few within IT feel compelled to side with Microsoft when debates over file formats, backward compatibility and security emerge, yet the Redmond software giant's decision to block a swathe of old formats such as pre-97 PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Corel Draw formats has been met with sympathy from analysts.

Microsoft said it was attempting to address security concerns by blocking the older file formats. "By default, these file types are blocked because the parsing code that Office 2003 uses to open and save the file types is less secure. Therefore, opening and saving these file types may pose a risk to you," it said in its advisory.

Microsoft apologizes to Corel, users for Office 2003 SP3 muck-up

Microsoft Corp. apologized to a software rival yesterday for saying its file format posed a security risk and issued new tools to let users of Office 2003 SP3 unblock a host of barred file types.

In a posting to his own blog, David LeBlanc, a senior software development engineer with the Microsoft Office team, admitted the company's mistake in blaming insecure file formats, including the one used by CorelDraw.

"We stated that it was the file formats that were insecure, but this is actually not correct," LeBlanc said, referring to a description in a now-changed support document. "A file format isn't insecure -- it's the code that reads the format that's more or less secure. The parsers we use for these older formats aren't as robust as the code we've written more recently, which is part of our decision to disable them by default.

Microsoft To Release XP SP3 Next Week

Now that Windows Vista service pack 1 has been released, all eyes have shifted to Microsoft's plans for Windows XP service pack 3, the final package of updates for the trusty OS. And, according to at least one source, Microsoft will roll out XP SP3 next Monday. As of Wednesday afternoon Pacific time, the BitTorrent search engine Mininova listed a 568.73 MB Windows XP Professional SP3 5503 file available for download. The file, which had 112 seeds and 417 leeches, had been downloaded 2083 times since it was posted Tuesday, according to the listing.

According to the file description notes, Microsoft will release the final version of XP SP3 on March 24, but the 5503 test build passes all Windows Genuine Advantage checks and is able to download Windows updates that previous XP SP3 builds weren't able to, which suggests that it could, in fact, be the final RTM build. When Microsoft released Vista SP1 in February, the final RTM code was identical to the Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC) 1 Refresh 2 test build that was released to a group of 15,000 testers two weeks earlier.

A Microsoft spokesperson, perhaps weary from the months-long barrage of Vista SP1 related inquiries, said the final version of XP SP3 is still on target to be released the first half of calendar year 2008, and the XP SP3 5503 build was a minor interim build released to address one specific issue for a subset of private beta testers.

Microsoft patched critical Windows bug in XP SP3 early

The appearance and disappearance of a Windows XP installation snafu indicates that Microsoft patched a critical vulnerability in XP's still-unfinished Service Pack 3 (SP3) weeks before it fixed any other version of Windows. The glitch, which sent some PCs into an endless round of reboots, was strangely similar to one faced by Vista users in February. Attackers have already tried to exploit that bug, which was patched last Tuesday -- as it turned out, two weeks after the newest build of Windows XP SP3 was released with the flaw fixed.

According to reports from multiple users on a Microsoft support newsgroup, PCs began rebooting immediately after they had been updated to SP3. "I have just updated my pc from xp sp2 to sp3," said a user identified as "yaojinglin" in a message to a SP3 support forum last Thursday. "The installation was successful, but when I reboot my pc after the installation finished, my pc started to reboot again and again."

On the XP SP3 support threads, a Microsoft representative named Shashank Bansal stepped into the rebooting discussion, which was beginning to seem as endless as the rebooting itself. Bansal asked for more information, then offered an explanation: "This issue happens with 3311 build of XP SP3. It happens because KB948590 stops installation of SP3 version of gdi32.dll on the system due to file-version differences."

Proposed flash standard to reduce card clutter

A new flash memory card specification has the backing of three major mobile phone companies and other parts of the electronics industry.

The Unified Flash Storage (UFS; not to be confused with Unix File System or Unified File System) specification is intended to eliminate the need for adaptors by defining a single memory card format that is suitable for any consumer device including cameras, phones and PDAs.

If manufacturers can't agree to use any one of the formats currently in use, why would they go along with a new one? The answer appears to be that UFS is being designed to overcome various limitations of existing formats, including capacity, performance and power consumption.

There seems to be no end to customer demand for increased memory for cameras and other devices (especially as image resolution improves), and without greater transfer speed it will take longer and longer to dump memory card contents into a computer or a mass storage device. UFS aims to reduce the time taken to transfer a 4G file from three minutes to a few seconds. The specification will improve both the bandwidth and latency of memory access...

Updates to Office 2003 include changes made in Office 2003 Service Pack 3

Nick MacKechnie: As you may know, Office 2003 Service Pack 3 contains some changes to the behaviour of Office. For example, certain file types cannot be opened or saved by default, although you can re-enable this functionality by setting registry keys as described in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article and on David LeBlancs Blog. A common question is whether these behaviour changes are included in post-SP3 security updates. In short, yes: post-SP3 security updates contain behaviour changes first released in SP3. This post will briefly describe why that occurs and will outline which updates contain which changes.

Microsoft Takes Heat for Office 2003 SP3 File Format Block

Microsoft is facing criticism from a competitor and some customers for its decision to block some older file formats with Office 2003 Service Pack 3, which it released last September. The only non-Microsoft file format that was blocked by Service Pack 3 was CorelDraw .CDR files.

"CorelDraw users can rest assured that they can still use the CorelDraw Graphics Suite normally on a system where Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 has been installed," Gerard Metrallier, Corel's director of graphics product management, said in a statement released Jan. 3. "This update from Microsoft does not impact CorelDraw at all or the capability of opening .CDR files from within CorelDraw or from Windows Explorer," he said. The service pack also blocks some of Microsoft's own file formats, according to a Knowledge Base article the company released that covers the issue.
