Windows Fiji: Now second half of 2008?

Because Microsoft won't comment officially on "Fiji," the expected, standalone update to Windows Media Center, its tough to confirm a date slip.

But Chris Lanier, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) in the digital media arena, is predicting that Fiji wont debut in 2007, as Microsoft and other interested parties had been predicting. Instead, Laniers betting Fiji is now a second half of 2008 update.

In a blog post dated June 12, Lanier blogged:

Don't expect Fiji this year. Dont expect Fiji early next year. Based on water-cooler talk Ive heard, I wouldnt expect to see it released until around Q3-Q4 2008 which would bring the platform back to Sep/Oct releases as has been customary since 2002. . Date is highly subject to change if things like DIRECTV support are to be included. ..

Windows Fiji' beta testing has begun

Speaking of Microsoft information lockdown, there’s been no word in ages from Microsoft about “Fiji,” the next version of Windows Media Center Edition. But that isn’t because Fiji has evaporated. In fact, the Fiji beta began a few weeks ago, according to a few sources with whom I’ve spoken and who’ve asked to keep their identities under wraps.

It’s not clear how many testers are part of this current test phase. There’s also no word on when and if Microsoft is going to tap the many other Fiji testers whom the company has signed up over the past year-plus or when Microsoft expects Fiji — also known as “Media Center Edition +1″ in some circles — is due out.

Last anyone heard, Fiji was supposed to build on the functionality that Microsoft delivered as part of Vista Service Pack 1. Some potential testers said they heard that Fiji would deliver some of the fit and finish that was missing in the Vista release. DirectTV support also is expected to be added to Media Center with the Fiji release.

Microsoft sending mixed messages about Windows futures with Fiji?

Mary Jo Foley: After a brief blip of news following the mid-July release to manufacturing of Microsoft “Fiji,” it’s back to radio silence again. But the quiet shouldn’t be interpreted as all is well.

In fact, a number of Fiji testers who asked not to be named and with whom I’ve communicated are not happy with how the test process for Windows Media Center TV Pack (Fiji) was conducted or the product that resulted.

In fact, one tester made a convincing argument that Microsoft is doing more harm than good with Fiji, by sending mixed messages around whether users should wait for Windows 7 or upgrade now to Windows Vista coupled with Fiji.

Adding to the Confusion; Fiji = MCE?

After months and months of speculation about whether Fiji is simply the codename for Windows Vista's first Service Pack (SP1), Vista R2 and even a whole new version of Windows, it seems yet another possibility has been added to the table.

Today, Mary Jo Foley posted an interesting article on her blog claiming that Fiji is indeed an interim release of Windows and will be the next version of Windows Media Center. It was also noted that Fiji is expected to be released before Windows Vienna (or "Seven").

Foley also sourced a blog post from back in November 2006, which was posted by Charlie Owen, one of the product managers for Windows Media Center. The post claims that Fiji is indeed the next version of Windows Media Center.

Fiji' on track to debut before Windows Seven

Before you get all excited, I should emphasize that the source of this news post is a blog. In my defence, it is a fairly trusted one and Bink has already approved it. Fiji has often been referred to as the codename for Windows Vista Service Pack 1. You might as well throw that association out the window. It seems Fiji is actually the next version of Windows Media Center. This is a bit odd for many reasons, even if you don't realize that the last two WMC codenames have been precious stones. Windows Vista's successor is codenamed Vienna, formerly codenamed Blackcomb, but it appears that Microsoft is now internally referring to it as Windows Seven. Microsoft's plan is to release Fiji before Windows Seven, much like Windows Media Center 2005 (codename Emerald) was available before Windows Vista.

This seems to leave us with more questions than answers. If not Fiji, what is the codename for Windows Vista SP1? Why has Vista's successor gone through three different codenames? Doesn't Windows Vista already include the latest Windows Media Center (codename Diamond)? Shouldn't Windows Seven include the next version of WMC? I guess not.

Vista Media Center Update "Fiji" Delayed

Fiji, the suspected codename for the next version/upgrade of Media Center might be held up by a lack of frequent flyer miles. The beta program, which many of you may have registered for isn?t exactly moving along. The invites that were supposed to be sent out on May 31th have gone no where fast. This leads me to think that the target ship date for Fiji is no where close.

Typically, a beta program for a product as large as Media Center is going to last for at least eight months to a year, and depending on the features included even longer. As my main feature predictions revolve around DIRECTV/Dish support, and HD DVD playback/Managed Copy I expect the beta to be a long one. Getting something like DIRECTV tuners working isn?t going to be easy, just look at the current problems with CableCARD.

Don?t expect Fiji this year. Don?t expect Fiji early next year. Based on water-cooler talk I?ve heard, I wouldn?t expect to see it released until around Q3-Q4 2008 which would bring the platform back to Sep/Oct releases as has been customary since 2002. Date is highly subject to change if things like DIRECTV support are to be included.

Microsoft seeks new Windows Media Center testers

Microsoft is in the midst of a quest for new testers for some kind of new Windows Media Center product, which may or may not be connected to “Fiji,” the next version of Windows Media Center Edition (MCE).

Late last week, Microsoft posted to its Connect private beta-tester site a “Windows Media Center Tester Application” survey, sources said. Microsoft is seeking a pool of testers for some new client-based product and is closing the tester application process this Friday, February 1, sources said.

One tester said he believes the survey is for Fiji, known these days as “MCE+1.” Microsoft officials would not confirm whether the survey is aimed at lining up Fiji testers. All they’d say (via a statement from a corporate spokeswoman, was...

What does Microsofts IPTV reorg have to do with Fiji?

Mary Jo Foley: I’ve been thinking about Microsoft’s quiet reorg, via which the company unified the IPTV, Media Center and HD DVD initiatives into a single organization, known as the Microsoft Connected TV business group.

Just munging these three teams together doesn’t necessarily mean a cohesive set of Microsoft TV products and services will suddenly emerge. As Microsoft Platform Strategy Advisor Harry Mower blogged:

“This is a step in the right direction as long as we also begin to consolidate the underlying platforms and developer technologies. Today, if you want to build a media experiences that spans devices, you are forced to use a hodgepodge of languages, tools and standards. Until we (Microsoft) realize that we need to deliver one unified platform for multimedia development and consumption, these types of changes are not going to matter much to the general consumer or customer.”

As a result of the latest reshuffling, the Media Center team, which (supposedly) has been working on the next out-of-band Media Center release, codenamed “Fiji,” is now part of Robbie Bach’s Entertainment and Devices unit, rather than the Windows client one. So what does this mean, if anything for the development and release of Fiji?

What you won’t hear Microsoft talk about at WinHEC 2007

Usually, at the annual Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conferences (WinHECs), Microsoft provides its system partners with some information about what's coming next on the operating systems front. Even if not a full-fledged roadmap, usually there are a few hints, a handful of futures slides, a couple of thinly-veiled references to general directions.

This year: The future has been ruled off limits, at least on the Windows client front.

Execs are not talking at all about Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 or "Fiji," the Media Center update expected later this year. And don't even think about hearing/seeing anything on Windows Seven, a k a Windows 2009. ..
