Fedora 11 now available

Fedora 11, the next release of the popular Linux distribution, is now available from the Fedora website. You can find full details of the major improvements and changes in this latest release in our previous post about the launch of Fedora 11, but to mention just a few, the release claims to have major speed improvements, boasting a 20 second startup, as well as overall speed improvements as ext4 is now used as the default file-system. Another interesting feature is the ability to perform a minimal install, which amounts to about 500MB (at mount-point '/'), which should make this release more appealing to users running servers, or machines with older hardware.

Linux Comparison: Fedora and conclusion

Fedora My first experience of Fedora came with Fedora 7, not long after I first used Ubuntu. I had difficulties getting it set up correctly, especially when it came to downloading new applications, but once it was running the way I liked, I much preferred it to Ubuntu. My first impressions of Fedora 10 are good, but there are some clear issues that need addressing, especially when it is put up against Ubuntu and openSUSE. Installation a mixed experience. At first I didn't think I was going to be able to review Fedora. The LiveCD loaded to 100 percent within a few minutes, then sat there, apparently doing nothing.

Fedora 11 due for release next Tuesday

Fedora 11, the next version of the popular Linux distribution, is due to be released on Tuesday next week, according to the Fedora Project website. The new version features better performance, increased security, and several improvements. Some of the more interesting features and improvements include a quicker startup time (no more than 20 seconds from power up to login screen, at least when first installed), ext4 being used as the file-system by default (on Anaconda installs), as well as coming with the latest versions of GNOME or KDE. The move to ext4 as the default file-system should mean users notice better performance overall, and the optimised startup should also result in better system performance.

Fedora to dump the 'Core'

In a mailing to the Fedora development listing, Red Hat's Bill Nottingham has announced that effective the next release there will be no Fedora Core. The distribution will be known only as Fedora.

"Starting with Fedora 7, there is no more Core, and no more Extras; there is only Fedora. One single repository, built in the community on open source tools, assembled into whatever spins the Fedora community desires," Nottingham wrote.

The mailing also listed the planned development cycle for Fedora 7 and outlined 28 new features for the next release. Among them, the separation of the distro into different "spins" (similar to Ubuntu) -- Fedora Desktop, Fedora Server and Fedora KDE.

Undoubtedly this is a major shift in the development of Fedora. The first beta is due for release on January 30th, with a final release scheduled for April 26th.

Q&A with Paul Frields at Red Hat

Just after Christmas, Neowin was given the chance for a community Q&A with Paul Frields of Red Hat. Paul has worked with Fedora since 2003, and became the Fedora Project Leader in January last year. Along with a few other things, Paul is also chairman of the Fedora Project Board, which makes decisions on how Fedora will move forward. As with the Q&A with Joe Brockmeier, Neowin's forum members came up with a great selection of questions. One of the things I have always noticed about Fedora is the default desktop wallpaper, which gives a real sense of effort and refinement when you see it. Did Fedora choose to go this route, or did it happen by chance?

Ebay to spin off Skype with IPO

In September of 2005, Ebay bought Skype for 4.1 billion dollars; a massive amount of money for a company that had many suitors. Even after Ebay won the bid for the company many were left wondering how Ebay would integrate Skype into its services effectively. The answer to that question is... they couldn't. Ebay has announced that it will spin off Skype with an IPO (initial public offering) to separate the services that were never meant to be meshed together. The original founders have tempted to buy back Skype but Ebay rejected the offer because they felt Skype was being undervalued.

Red Hat releases Fedora Core 6

On Tuesday, Red Hat released Fedora Core 6, its newest hobbyist version of Linux, with an expandable new installation routine and a third try at incorporating Xen virtualization software.

Fedora Core 6, free and faster-moving alternative to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, is in effect a rough draft of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, to be released in late 2006 or early 2007. The biggest change coming with RHEL 5 is Xen, open-source virtualization software that lets multiple operating systems run simultaneously, each in its own separate compartment called a virtual machine. Virtualization, a high-end feature now arriving in x86 servers, lets a single server replace several less efficiently used ones.

Xen appeared in Fedora Core 4 and 5, but the version in Fedora Core 6 should be close to what appears in RHEL 5, said Max Spevack, the Fedora project leader. One major feature is a graphical administration tool to control Xen virtual machines.

Also in Fedora Core 6 is Linux eye candy, based on the AIGLX project and the Compiz window manager. The features require 3D graphics video support, but permit several features. Among them, desktops of the graphical user interface can be mapped to faces of a virtual 3D cube that users can rotate. And windows can become transparent and wobbly like Jell-O when moved.

The Linux version also switches to the DejaVu font, an open-source font project derived from Bitstream's Vera typeface.

Why Facebook users must still be cautious

It all started with an article in The Consumerist, which noted that a change to Facebook's Terms of Service had been instituted, seemingly on the sly*, that extended the company's access to your content essentially forever. Here at Neowin we made an effort to take apart the new Facebook TOS to see just how onerous they were. Facebook bounced back, pumping out spin to media outlets big and small, about how they were retreating from the "forever" addition to their TOS. They retreated to their previous TOS which, following their spin campaign, was supposed to make everything in the world all right again.

AMD to spin off fabs, claims analyst

Is AMD about to announce that it's going to reinvent itself as a fabless semiconductor company? That's certainly what one analyst thinks John Lau, an analyst with investment hous Jefferies & Co. this week told his clients that moles have told him AMD has such a strategy in mind and might announce the plan as early as mid-September, the Austin American Statesman writes.

Lau's forecast is that AMD will say it's seeking a buyer or buyers for its Fab 36 and Fab 38 facilities in Dresden, Germany. In the meantime, the fabs will be spun off as a separate company. The spin-off will be free to produce chips for the other companies, not just AMD, and to seek investment on the open market.

Intel launches probe into AMD's spin-off plans

Intel's lawyers are evaluating whether a new manufacturing business spun out of AMD could end a long-standing cross-licensing agreement between the firms. On Tuesday, AMD announced plans to spin off its manufacturing operations into a separate company tentatively called The Foundry. The restructuring lets struggling AMD rid itself of the financial burden of running fabrication plants and provides a hefty influx of cash from its partner in the deal, Advanced Technology Investment Co. (ATIC).

Now, rival Intel is throwing a flag on the play. "We certainly have to evaluate it," said Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy. "It certainly could be a change in the competitive landscape." Mulloy explained that Intel and AMD have licensed each other's patents since 1976. Among other things, the latest pact signed in 2001 calls for AMD to pay royalties to Intel for the use of its x86 architecture.

Linux Apes Vista With New Distro Called Vixta

If Windows Vista is so terrible, how come theres someone in the open-source community who wants to copy it? Thats the case with the latest Linux distro, a Vista look-alike called Vixta.

The project is hosted by Sourceforge, the online home of numerous open-source efforts, large and small. Vixta fits into the latter category.

Theres hardly any information on the effort, other than a short blurb, which says its based on the Fedora distro of Linux. Fedora is itself a project which evolved out of the Red Hat community, and is still sponsored by the enterprise-Linux powerhouse.

Vixta appears to be the brainchild of one A. Paulo Santos, who has posted most of the messages on the short Vixta-info mailing list, including one announcing the availability of Vixta release 094.

Vixtas home page touts the imminent availability of version 095, and enumerates the goals of the project as follows: ->
