Yahoo's New Build Your Own Search Engine Nips At Google

Ever wanted to take a crack at making a better version of the Yahoo search engine? Now’s your chance.

Yahoo announced a new initiative Thursday called Build Your Own Search Service, or BOSS. It’s a set of programming tools developers can use to tailor Yahoo’s search index for their own use.

As part of the program's launch, Yahoo is making its web, news and images index available to developers immediately. BOSS will allow developers who sign up for a public API key to manipulate rankings and the overall appearance of the search pages, as well as create mashups of the data with other data sources.

Google actually tried something similar with its Google custom search program, which basically fed Google search results to your site, but doesn’t match BOSS’ customization.

Microsoft, Intel build fast, efficient Windows 7 machines

Microsoft has made enhancements to its upcoming Windows 7 operating system that will speed up applications on machines with Intel's multicore chips, resulting in better overall system performance and less power consumption.

Hardware hooks in Intel's new chips will help Windows 7 deliver performance gains when running applications like DVD playback compared to Windows Vista, the companies said in a joint press briefing on Tuesday. The improved performance is accompanied by more efficient power usage, as the OS makes better use of power management features included in Intel's latest chips.

Google faces more than just a new rival in Wikia

Google Inc. and other search engines face far more than just a new rival in Wikia Inc.; they face the prospect of hundreds, even thousands of new competitors.

The entire search-engine project that Wikia is working on will enter the open-source domain, drastically reducing the cost for just about anyone to make a search engine, said Gil Penchina, the company's CEO. Instead of paying millions of dollars to index the Web and create the software to build a search page, new search companies will find these items free online thanks to the open-source and free software communities.

"In search, it still costs about $5 million to $10 million to build a site," said Penchina during an interview in Taipei. "We want to make it possible for anyone to build a search site for $500. We don't view Google as the competition; we view cost as the competition."

The project, which was started by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, consists of four components: the indexing of the Web, developing a search engine application, developing an algorithm, and having people filter sites and rank results.

Faroo makes your PC a searchbot

If you're familiar with the grid computing projects SETI and Home and Folding at Home, you'll grok this in an instant: Faroo takes the idea of a centralized search engine like Google and spreads it out to the users. With this service installed, your computer becomes a micronode on the Faroo search network.

The benefit to the search company, Faroo, is obvious: They don't need to build a billion-dollar infrastructure. The benefit to the user, though, is Faroo's key differentiator: The company will shunt a proportion of advertising revenues to users, based on what their computers are indexing.

The challenges to getting this to work, though, are legion: How do you get enough users online to build an index good enough for users to actually want to use it? What about index farms that try to game or hack the system? How do you get users to run yet another resident process on their PC? (For me, a payout of a few cents a month isn't worth dragging down Windows.)

Also, if ISPs continue their efforts to limit bandwidth to consumers, Faroo's prospects could be limited as well.

Still, though: Cool, don't you think?

Windows 7 build 7137 leaked

Barely two weeks after build 7127 leaked we have another fresh leak of Windows 7, build 7137. This time around the build tag is 7137.0.090521-1745 meaning this build is only a week old. As ever the build is available at the usual places but it might be worth waiting until RTM as a lot of Windows 7 torrents have been hit by malware and viruses recently. Microsoft is still on target to finalise Windows 7 over the summer with a general availability this fall. Un-official wallpaper not included by default, thanks to djlegion for the screenshots.
