Microsoft and Yahoo are poised to make Web-based e-mail more powerful than ever with updates that bring a desktop-style interface to their respective Web mail offerings. We tested betas (currently invitation-only) of Windows Live Mail and Yahoo Mail, and also looked at an open-source newcomer called Zimbra. All three apps use an increasingly popular programming technique called Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) to improve on standard Web mail and even Google's Gmail.

Google: Leave No E-Mail Behind

Launched Nov. 15,
the Google Apps Email Migration API is an application programming interface that lets software developers create tools that can move e-mail from any

The new software opens up e-mail migration to the broadest

Windows Live Bug Opened Door to Scammers
Microsoft Corporation has
fixed a bug in its Windows
Live ID registration that let
users deceptively register a
false e-mail address. The
false e-mail address could
then be used as an ID for
Microsoft's Live Messenger
program, which could trick a
user into thinking they are
chatting with someone who is
not whom they appear to be.
Erik Duindam, a Web developer
in Leiderdorp, the
Netherlands, reported the
problem to Microsoft on
Monday. Microsoft acknowledged
it had fixed the bug but did
not have further information
on the flaw's impact.
It's unclear how long
the flaw may have existed or
how many accounts with
deceptive instant messenger
IDs could have been created.
If a user attempts to create a
Windows Live ID, Microsoft
sends a confirmation e-mail to
the e-mail address entered by
the user. Without
confirmation, Microsoft
includes a warning with future
messages sent by instant
message, which appear as:
fake@emailaddress (E-mail
Address Not Verified).
However, accounts
created over the weekend with
fake e-mail addresses were
still active as of Tuesday and
carried no such warning.
Microsoft should try to shut
down the fake accounts as soon
as possible but it could be
difficult, especially if
Microsoft was not aware of the
flaw and can't track the
spoofed accounts. An attacker
could use the flaw as part of
a social-engineering ploy,
where users are tricked into
doing something that puts
their machine at risk. Users
could be tricked into thinking
they are talking to someone
they trust.

Fake Microsoft Patch E-Mail Lets Hackers Build Botnet
The Internet Storm Center is
warning that hackers are
spamming e-mail messages that
purport to be a Microsoft
security update. The phony
e-mail doesn't carry any
fixes. Actually, it contains
malicious code to infect
unwary users who open the
message and click on any links
or attachments.
"Microsoft would never
e-mail patches, so I don't
know why people still fall for
this but they do," said
Johannes Ullrich, chief

Internet Storm Center, in an

everybody got a copy of the

Chrome masks as Safari to fool Windows Live Mail
According to Google's Chrome Releases blog, Chrome-users no longer need to go out of their way to make Windows Live Mail/Hotmail work. In
addition to providing important security updates, Google's most recent version of Chrome--1.0.154.46--makes it easy for followers to use Windows

Previously, Chrome-users who had wanted to be able to use Windows Live Mail would have to switch the user-agent manually, but now the browser will
identify itself properly as "Chrome" for most normal sites but as "Safari" for URLs ending with mail.live.com.

this information and can use it to build their own services that connect people to their contacts.

Google Tacks On 10 More Years To E-Mail Archiving Program
Aimed at businesses that need to retain and store e-mail, Google has added 10 more years to its e-mail archiving service, Google Message Discover.
"Regulations and guidelines like the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure put pressure on IT organizations to ensure that e-mail is properly retained and
can be reliably located and preserved in the event of legal discovery," Google said in a company blog. "Coupled with the growing importance of
e-mail as a store of intellectual property, e-mail archiving has become both legally necessary and critical to the operation of your business."
According to a Google whitepaper, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure applies "to virtually all organizations, in all industries, including
private, public and non-profit organizations. In short, if an organization can have a civil lawsuit filed against it, then the FRCP should figure
prominently in that organization's data management strategy."

EU cracks down on fake blogger astroturfing
Nothing beats word of mouth for getting people to put their hand in their pockets. So it didn't take long for cheeky marketing departments to cotton
on to the power of blogs and pose as consumers praising their own particular widget to the skies to help lift their top line.
Sneaky, perhaps, but usually legal. Not for much longer, however, as covert commercial blogging - or flogging - will soon be banned by
Brussels.
Under laws due to come into force at the beginning of next year, but likely to be delayed until April for the UK,
companies posing as consumers on fake blogs, providing fake testimonies on consumer rating websites such as TripAdvisor, or writing fake book reviews
on Amazon risk criminal or civil liability.

Auf Wiedersehen, Gmail - Google Loses Court Case in Germany
German courts have confirmed
that Google's fight for the
G-mail trademark has been
lost. 33-year old German
businessman Daniel Giersch has
won a case
against Google, meaning
that Google is not permitted
to use the "Gmail" name in
Germany. Giersch had
registered 'G-mail' in 2000,
four years before Google came
out with its web mail service
of the same name.
This is the second time
that Google has had to give up
the Gmail name - two years ago
Google handed over the rights
to the name in the UK. At that
time Google changed the name
to Google Mail, after its
run-in with research firm
Independent International
Investment Research (IIIR) -
which used the name G-mail to
refer to a part of its
financial analytics software.
Indeed Google is
having trouble holding its own
in Europe as a whole, in the
Gmail battle. Again Giersch is
at the center of it, as he
also won in Austria and claims
to own the name in Spain,
Portugal and Switzerland.
Meanwhile in Poland, Google's
Gmail adversary is "a polish

Apple Denies Internal Source for Fake iPhone Memo
Apple officials have
offered no detailed
explanation regarding the
source of a memo sent to Apple
employees the morning of May
16 that falsely claimed that
there would be a delay in the

iPhone and the Mac OS X

Soon
after the purported internal
Apple e-mail was published on
the consumer electronics Web

stock price fell from $108.83
to a low of $103.42. The stock
recovered by the end of the
day, and moved higher on May
17, but at one point nearly $4
billion of Apple's market
capitalization had evaporated.
Engadget quickly
posted an update to its story,
saying the e-mail was a hoax,
but still stating that it was
"an actual internal Apple
e-mail that went out to
thousands of Apple employees
earlier today."
However, Natalie Kerris,
spokesperson for Apple, based
in Cupertino, Calif.,
contradicted this, telling
eWEEK on May 17 that the
e-mail "did not come from
