21.05.2008Microsoft To Extend Windows XP Deadline For OEMs
Long live XP!
Microsoft will announce later today that it will give OEMs six additional months to sell PCs with Windows XP
installed, CRN has learned.
Microsoft is extending the deadline for sales of new direct OEM PCs with Windows XP installed from
January 31, 2008 to June 30, 2008, according to sources close to the company.
"The named accounts, the ones that have volume,
have complained about the end of life for XP, and that's because adoption of Windows Vista has been slow," said one Microsoft partner who requested
anonymity. "This is a pretty important development for larger partners, and it's also somewhat surprising because it shows that they've been
listening to us."
The move comes as little surprise to VARs and system builders who have been ripping Windows Vista off the
desktops and notebooks they sell and replacing it with Windows XP ever since the next generation operating system debuted in January.
"We don't really do anything with Vista right now, the requests are few and far between," said Douglas Lee, CFO and director of business
development at BostonTech Partners, a Canton, Mass., solution provider.
Microsoft, for its part, claims demand is strong for
Vista and its momentum is unprecedented. However, the fact that Microsoft has been working on a third service pack for Windows XP, currently slated
for release in the first half of 2008, is a reflection of the still-strong demand for the OS, according to system builders.
"The
problem is that XP is too good of a product," said one Microsoft system builder partner who requested anonymity. "XP has become so embedded in
peoples' environments, it's extremely difficult to get them to switch to Vista."

16.08.2005Microsoft Extends Life of Windows XP
Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it will keep selling a version of Windows XP for use on a new breed of low-cost computers for at least two years longer
than the older operating system will be available on mainstream PCs.
The software maker said Windows XP Home will be available through June
2010, or for a year beyond the release of the next version of Windows, for computers like Intel Corp.'s Classmate PC and ASUSTek Computer
Inc.'s Eee PC. Those machines have smaller hard drives, less memory and slower processors than most Windows computers sold today, and most would
have a hard time running the bulkier Windows Vista.
Microsoft had planned to stop selling most versions of XP at the end of June 2008, with
exceptions for small computer-building shops and PCs sold in developing countries. But surprising demand in developed countries for what it calls
ultra-low-cost personal computers prompted Redmond-based Microsoft to extend that deadline.

04.04.2008Microsoft Extends Deadline for Outlook Link to Hotmail
Microsoft has extended the deadline for being able to
download Hotmail email through Outlook Express using the DAV protocol, previously it said that this wouldn't be possible after June 30th, when it
planned to remove the link altogether.
The following notice was added to the Windows Live Hotmail Teams Blog on the 5th of May:
"Recently, many customers received notification regarding Microsoft’s plan to disable the DAV protocol, which allows you to access your Windows
Live Hotmail inbox from Outlook Express. From the feedback we received, it became clear that you needed additional time to evaluate alternative
solutions and with this in mind, we are postponing the transition deadline previously announced. This means that you will continue to be able to
access your Windows Live Hotmail accounts from Outlook Express beyond the June 30 transition deadline.
As Microsoft continues to evolve its
products to meet your needs, we appreciate your feedback. This change to Outlook Express protocol is one such evolution and will allow for managing of
multiple accounts and today’s large inboxes. We will update you on expected future changes and alternatives with enough advance notice to ensure
a smooth transition."
They have yet to announce a new date when the DAV protocol will eventually be phased out.

Now all eyes are focused on Microsofts next move. The company warned this month

The deadline passed Saturday with no sign that the two sides were negotiating.

After years of early warning to all U.S. citizens, and dozens of TV stations broadcasting the deadline to switch from analog signal to full digital

conversion, President Obama pushed to delay the changeover forward to June 12, 2009. Even with months of advance warning, millions of Americans
waited till the last minute to update their dated television sets to add a digital box. Analysts still predict that millions of Americans still use

12.06.2009As WinXP Deadline Looms, OEMs Turn To Vista Downgrade Rights
Microsoft may be preparing to discontinue sales of Windows XP, but some OEMs have found a way to circumvent the software giant's June 30
deadline.
In yet another sign of the market's resistance to Windows Vista, Dell Computer, Hewlett Packard (NYSE:HPQ), and Sony on
Wednesday all confirmed plans to exercise the downgrade rights Microsoft offers with OEM versions of Windows Vista Business and Vista Ultimate in
order to continue offering XP-equipped PCs to their customers.
Downgrade rights, which Microsoft also offers to volume licensing customers,
give users the ability to roll back to the previous version of the product they're using. Downgrade rights have existed since 2001 for Windows,
but many Microsoft partners say they've been seeing a recent uptick in the number of customers exercising downgrade rights to roll Vista back to
XP Professional.
