21.8.2007Windows Vista Grace Period Extended to 120 Days
Every Vista DVD includes the
ability to install any edition
of Vista without a product
key. When you install without
a product key, you get an
automatic 30 day evaluation
period. This probably isn't
news to anyone.
What may be news
to you, however, is that you
can easily extend the 30-day
Windows Vista grace period to
120 days. No hacks required.
This is an official, supported
operation directly from
Microsoft.
To extend the grace period
another 30 days, simply start
a command prompt as
Administrator, and issue this
command:
slmgr -rearm
Reboot for the
change to take effect, and
voila, you have 30 more days.
You can only extend three
times, so the total grace
period for a Vista evaluation
is 120 days.

31.08.2006Microsoft will not extend availability of XP
Microsoft announced yesterday the worldwide extension of the availability of Windows XP Home for an emerging, new class of mobile personal
computers commonly known as ultra-low-cost PCs, or ULCPCs. Windows XP Home for ULCPCs will be available until the later of June 30, 2010, or one year
after general availability of the next version of Windows.
That extension does not apply to other editions of Windows XP; such as
Professional, Tablet and Media Edition.
PressPass: Will Microsoft extend sales of other editions of Windows XP?
Dix: No, there
is no plan to extend sales of other editions of Windows XP beyond June 30, 2008. We are very proud of the progress that we have made with Windows
Vista over the last sixteen months. Since its launch, Windows Vista has become the fastest-selling operating system in Microsoft history, and more
than 100 million Windows Vista licenses have been sold worldwide.
Last fall, our OEM partners asked us to extend sales of Windows XP to
give their customers more time to transition to Windows Vista while we worked with other software vendors to expand application compatibility. Today,
more than 2,500 applications have received the Windows Vista logo (a ten-fold increase since launch) and more than 78,000 devices and components are
supported by drivers either in-box or on Windows Update. On NPD’s list of the top 100 consumer applications selling at retail, 98 are now
compatible—and the latest versions of the top free downloads (Adobe Reader, Shockwave and iTunes) are all compatible.

21.05.2008Official Way to Use Vista without Activation 120 Days
Official Way to Install and
Use Windows Vista without
Activation for Free for 120
Days
By default,
Windows Vista can be
installed, used and run
without any license, product
key or the need of activation
for 30 days grace period, for
purpose of trial or
evaluation. Although Microsoft
initially stressed that users
should purchase a license with
valid product key before the
trial period expires, or else
Windows Vista will lock into
Reduced Functionality Mode.
However, a "rearm" method
has long since been discovered
to be able to extend, or reset
the remaining time for
activation to another fresh 30
days, for up to 3 times.
Now Microsoft has
confirmed that Windows Vista
can be used and run for 120
days or 4 months ( 3
rearms ), and extending the
activation grace period is not
a violation of the Vista End
User License Agreement (EULA).
All versions of Vista include
Windows Vista Ultimate allow a
30-day free period without
activation, except the
corporate-oriented Vista
Enterprise, which supports
only a three-day trial.

22.02.2007Who should fix Microsoft's UAC?
One of the most discussed
features of Windows Vista is
the User Account Control (UAC)
feature. The UAC pops up
whenever something is
attempting to make use of
something that is in the
domain of the
administrator.
Many
users have complained that the
UAC is the "dialog that cries
wolf" in that it comes up so
often that users end up either
ignoring it or turning it off
-- both of which nullify the
purpose of the UAC.
ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley
argues that UAC needs an
overhaul and talks about some
of the discussions that are on
the way.
Will
Microsoft extend UAC to be
more flexible and usable by
users? Should it be left to a
Symantec to solve or should
Stardock (whom I work for)
extend it to support more
options?
What's
your view on the Windows Vista
UAC?

30.10.2007Microsoft can't afford to support OEM Vista?
Microsoft might have
$7.6 billion in spare cash in
the bank, but when it comes to
supporting users who purchase
Vista on a new machine, the
software giant is all too
ready to cry poor.
Conventional wisdom
holds that if you feel the
urge to upgrade to Windows
Vista, buying it pre-installed
on a new machine is the best
way to go. The advantages are
allegedly twofold: there
should be fresh and functional
drivers for all the built-in
hardware, and you get OEM
pricing (much lower than the
retail $400-$700 price range)
for your new OS.
That
discount pricing comes with a
nasty twist, however. Because
you've purchased an OEM copy,
Microsoft won't extend to you
the courtesy of a 90-day
support period for Vista,
which it does offer to
customers who struggle through
the upgrade process on their
existing machines. Instead, it
will direct you straight back
to your hardware manufacturer...

We're going to focus on Vista's small and large features that are missing from XP, separated into three categories: applications,

the features readers feel make Vista worth it.

03.01.2009Why all Vista users should upgrade to Windows XP
Don Reisinger: Now that Microsoft has announced the availability of the
RC version of
Service Pack 3 for our old friend, XP, I'm delighted to tell you all that not only is this upgrade substantial and extremely helpful. Believe it
or not, this upgrade creates the best Windows experience I have ever used.
Now, as you may be aware, Vista is, well, crap. Sure,
SP1 is on the way early next year and the hope is still there that Microsoft may be able to turn it around, but let's face it -- the chances of Vista
becoming a wanted OS are dwindling by the minute.
Let's see what has gone down with Vista over the past year: Dell, HP and Acer
have all asked Microsoft to extend XPs availability for an additional six months due to the concerns of customers; many businesses have been slow to
adopt the new OS because of poor performance and compatibility issues; complaints have soured the release claiming Microsoft's new OS is slower, less
capable and downright awful; and last but certainly not least, it's as if Microsoft can't stand Vista considering the level of detail it's
releasing on its follow-up, Windows 7.

25.05.2006Rumor: Microsoft to Launch Retail Stores
It seemed to work for Apple, so why not create a Microsoft store? According to Fudzilla, some of their Microsoft sources 'confirmed that the
company wants to reach out for the retail market presence'. By this, they mean they want to have many retail shops that sell only Microsoft
products. The details of how far out this will extend (PCs? Windows Mobile Phones? Or purely Microsoft branded equipment and software?) are not yet
available.
While yes, Apple did it first, and seem to have become rather successful in doing so (it's hard to deny NOT wanting to
walk into the Apple store when you pass it!), Microsoft seems to have finally noticed it. This should be nice on many levels for consumers, depending
how far Microsoft takes it. If they can extend service and support like the Genius Bar at Apple stores, it might be the guiding hand customers have
been looking for that have been put off by bad Windows Vista press. Or at least, help support people running Windows on Macs!
