special build of Windows, just because Windows doesn't run very well on a certain computer. ASUS' runaway success Eee PC is now 'officially'
available with Windows XP, but (according to APC magazine) is not exactly a great experience. There are none of the nice pre-loaded apps that come
with the Linux version, for example. And XP has some real problems coping with the screen size and limited system specs of the unit. As a result, ASUS
says it is going back to Microsoft and working on a special XP build that will be lightweight and more suited to UMPCs.

If you'd like to install it via WU today, you'll need to visit the Windows Update website. To do this, go to
Windows Update and perform an express or custom install, make sure you see the service
pack selected, and proceed with the install. After it downloads, you'll see a series of screens and you'll be asked to make a few clicks before the
install will begin.
If you're not in a rush, we recommend you use Automatic Updates to install Windows XP SP3. It provides the
best experience because the download will happen in the background. We're planning to begin automatically distributing Windows XP SP3 over AU

enterprise users found that throughout 2007, Windows XP use remained at a steady 89%. Vista grew from zero to 6% in that same time, but that came
about because users moved from Windows 2000 to Vista, not from XP to Vista. Don't expect corporations to switch to Vista from XP in 2008.

Eric Fitzgerald: I got the question last week, why there are so many logon failure events on Windows XP when it is not domain joined.
The short answer is, by design. (Yes, bad design.)
The longer answer is that the shell team is working around the fact that
there is no "tell me if this user account has a blank password" API.
When in a workgroup (not domain joined), Windows XP
displays a welcome screen that has little pictures (called "tiles") for each user who is permitted to log on to the computer.
The shell team wanted the experience that when you click on a tile, that you will immediately be logged on if your password is blank (we have good
data that a large percentage of home users have blank passwords). They only want you to be prompted for a password if you actually have a password.
Fair enough, and it also helps with accessibility for people for whom typing is challenging.

We didnt do much to the Slideshow feature in the Windows Live Photo Gallery, but there have been several questions coming in about this feature, so we
thought that it was worth a brief rundown of whats changed.
In a nutshell, heres how the slideshow feature works in this
release:
- XP users: Basic slideshow only (equivalent to the ˜Classic theme on Vista). No transitions, and no support for videos. The rich
themes are very dependent on the Vista graphics model, so it will take a fair amount of work to get the rich themes working on XP (more than we could
bite off for this release).
- Vista users (basic graphics hardware): The experience should be unchanged from Vista. You may see a limited
set of themes available, and may or may not see transport controls depending on the capabilities of your graphics card.
- Vista users
(premium graphics hardware): The experience should be unchanged from Vista.
We
blogged about the Vista Slideshow experience previously. Most
of this still applies (with the exception of the above notes). One exception is that although the rich themes were only available on certain Vista
SKUs, all themes are available in all Vista SKUs (again, depending on your graphics hardware).

laptop. Microsofts goal is to provide a high-quality Windows experience on the XO device; if this is achieved, then Windows XP for the XO could be
