Windows Server 2003 - XP Conversion Pack

Windows Server 2003 is well known for its superior speed, stability, and security when compared to Windows XP. This fact is proven by Microsoft's use of the Windows Server 2003 kernel in both Windows x64 Edition and the upcoming Windows Vista. Given this fact, it's no wonder that many Windows users have already switched to Windows Server 2003 to gain such improvements. However, these users will have no doubt also discovered that compatibility issues are common when using Windows Server 2003 as a primary home-use OS. Until Now... We are proud to present version 2.0 of Windows X's popular Windows Server 2003 - XP Conversion Pack. Windows Home Server x64 Connector Announcement Coming at CES 2008

Good news is on the way for those of you who wish to use Windows Home Server with x64 home computers.

Next Release of OneCare Won't Support Vista x64

Peter GalliWhen Microsoft announced that it was ready to roll out Windows Live OneCare version 1.5 to coincide with the general release of Windows Vista, it omitted one important fact: the product will not support Vista x64 or XP x64. I received an email this morning from a reader telling me that the OneCare v1.5 beta would not install on his Vista test machine as it was just for 32-bit systems. "It would be nice, now that 64-bit Vista is set to go, to specify if the software will run properly in 64-bit," he said. "Has this changed in the final release? It would be nice to know as I have OneCare on all three home PCs, and plan on upgrading all of them to 64-bit Vista," he said.

So I asked Microsoft, which confirmed that, indeed, OneCare v1.5 would not run on Vista x64 or Windows XP x64 for that matter, "although it will support 32-bit Windows on x64 hardware," a Microsoft spokesperson told me. The spokesperson was also pretty non-committal about the possibility of x64 support going forward, saying "we continually evolve OneCare to meet customer demand, though we have no further specifics to share at this time around potential support for x64 in the future." My colleague Joe Wilcox spoke to Gina Narkunas, the lead product manager for Windows Live OneCare, this evening from London. She told him that "it wasn't a business priority to support 64-bit," because there is "no consumer demand" for a 64-bit right now.

Vista SP1 to be just 45MB over Windows Update?

Q: How big is SP1?

A: śWindows Vista SP1 is approximately 45 MB when delivered over Windows Update and is designed to not significantly change the UI or regress application compatibility.ť

Q: What are some examples of śsupport for emerging technologies and standards?ť

A: śWith SP1, Windows Vista can boot via EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) on an x64 machine. SP1 supports ExFAT, a new file format that will be used in flash memory storage and consumer devices Support for SD Advanced DMA Support to improve transfer performance and decrease CPU utilization is part of SP1

Catalyst 7.8 drivers available for Windows, Linux

AMD's graphics group has just uncorked yet another monthly video driver rev for Radeon cards, Catalyst 7.8. The Windows versions of Cat 7.8 promise several performance improvements, including a claimed "11% or greater" performance boost with antialiasing in Lost Planet DX10 on the Radeon HD 2900 XT. Such performance improvements with antialiasing on the Radeon HD are both needed and possible for reasons we explained here. 3DMark scores on the Radeon HD 2400 and 2600 are purportedly up by "as much as 6%," as well.

The Linux release brings a native 64-bit version of Catalyst Control Center and support for TV-out connectors, along with a range of stability fixes.

Catalyst 7.8 can be had for Windows XP 32-bit, Windows XP x64, Windows Vista x86, Windows Vista x64, Linux x86, and Linux x64.

Live Messenger 8.5 update no longer supported on XP x64

Thanks Avi for posting this in Back Page News.

From the Inside Windows Live Messenger Team Blog: Back in November we shipped the final version of Windows Live Messenger 8.5 along with several other Windows Live applications and services. A lot of you have already upgraded, and for that we thank you and hope you’re enjoying it as much as we enjoyed building it. Starting soon, we’re going to make it easier for those of you who haven’t upgraded yet to get onto our latest and greatest.

This will happen in two phases. First, everyone running Windows XP or Windows Vista will get a prompt encouraging you to upgrade. When you accept the upgrade, the new unified installer will launch and start upgrading Messenger. While it’s installing, you’ll have the option to download and install other Windows Live applications. You don’t have to take any of them, but we think you’ll like them and hope you’ll give them a try.

Andrzej Lipka: When you try to open the Distributed Application Designer from a console installed on an x64 server you may see the console crashes with .NET error in the Application Log (something of type badimageformat).

This seems to be a bug in SP1 RC. To work around it use a console from an x86-32 (32 bit) machine to connect to the x64 server.

On OpsMgr 2007 RTM this issue does not exist.

Live OneCare Home Page Crashes Internet Explorer 7 x64

So I'm sitting here trying to get the Windows Live OneCare version 1.6 story up on the front page, and I can't figure out why Internet Explorer 7 keeps crashing. I've never ever seen it crash before. And yet, it always seems to happily commit suicide right before I'm done putting the news article together. I finally track the problem down to the fact I keep launching the OneCare home page to grab the link.

Yes, you read correctly. It would appear that Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare home page causes IE7 64bit to crash. I took the liberty of downloading Firefox x64 to make sure it had nothing to do with 64bit web browsers in general. Nope, Firefox loaded the page just fine. How embarrassing for Microsoft. The issue has been reproduced on two separate Windows Vista machines with entirely different configurations. Can anyone confirm the issue with IE7 x64 on XP?

Note: On Vista x64, IE7 32bit will load the site correctly.
