Microsoft Exchange 2010 holds challenges, rewards for IT executives

Those eyeing a migration to Exchange 2010 will find lots of options that improve the platform, but they won't come without careful attention to deployment details including the rollout of Windows Server 2008, says one expert.

Exchange 2010, which was released to manufacturing Thursday, includes new storage and deployment options, enhanced in-box management capabilities, built-in e-mail archiving, new database clustering, and additional hardware options. And while it all is designed to add up to a better Exchange it doesn't eliminate the complexity of deploying the messaging server, says Lee Dumas, the director of architecture for Azaleos, a provider of remote management services for Exchange and SharePoint.

Will replication in Exchange Server 2007 SP1 woo IT?

With the first service pack for Exchange Server 2007 due out at any time, the question is whether or not some of its new replication features will get IT managers to jumpstart their migrations from older Exchange platforms on to the new messaging server.

Microsoft has promised Exchange Server 2007 SP1 for the fourth quarter of this year. The big new feature will be standby continuous replication, or SCR, which lets IT managers replicate an Exchange Server to another location, which could then be activated if there were a disaster at the company's main location.

Exchange Server 2007 came with local continuous replication and cluster continuous replication. The LCR copies the Exchange Server onto another location on the same server, while CCR gives IT manager's instant fail-over to another server at the same location. The addition of SCR means IT managers will have a third copy of the Exchange Server at a remote location, although it has to be activated manually.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Public Beta is Released

Microsoft released a public beta of the the widely-used Exchange Server today. Creatively named "Exchange Server 2010," it serves up a number of intriguing features, including:

General Features:
- E-mail archiving
- Threaded email conversations similar to that of Gmail, allow you to easily track an ongoing conversation. (This feature can be disabled.)
- Speech-to-Text conversion for voicemail messages.
- A "MailTips" feature which warns you if you're sending a message to several people, if it has CCs or BCCs, and if you're sending the email outside of your organization. This can help prevent accidental information leaks from occurring.
- The 'Federation' technology used in Windows Server has been adapted to exchange in the form of calendar sharing; calendar schedules can be shared among users regardless if they're using a hosted or on-premises Exchange install.

Outlook Web Access:
- SMS sending and receiving in the Outlook Web Access application.
- Contact Nickname support
- A one-page message display mode, allowing all the messages in a folder to be displayed in one scrollable list. This prevents users from having to continually advance from page-to-page.
- Windows Live Messenger Integration
- Many browsers are supported. Officially supported are: Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox.

Optimizations that have been made in the way that Exchange Server stores and manages files, allows for it to adapt to and optimize for a wide range of set-ups, allowing smaller businesses to cut costs, and still get great performance out of lower-scale servers and hard drive arrays.

The aforementioned features, along with hundreds of other improvements come in the Exchange 2010 Beta available for immediate download by clicking the link. The beta, contrary to most, will remain operational for a full 365 days!
