11.01.2006Microsoft fixes nasty DNS server, Exchange flaws
Microsoft has released its May
set of security patches,
fixing critical bugs in Word,
Excel, Windows, Office,
Internet Explorer, Exchange
and the CAPICOM cryptography
technology used by BizTalk
Server.
Microsoft
rates all seven groups of the
updates as critical, but
security experts said that IT
administrators should be
particularly concerned with
the MS07-026 and MS07-029
updates, which fix flaws in
Exchange and the Windows DNS
server. The Exchange update
fixes previously undisclosed
flaws in Microsoft's
messaging software that could
be exploited to seize control
of the server. Hackers could
potentially install
unauthorized software on the
server simply by sending it a
maliciously crafted e-mail
message. Unlike the Exchange
bugs, the flaw in Windows'
DNS server flaw has been known
for about a month and
therefore attackers have
already developed code that
exploits the flaw. The problem
affects Windows 2000 and
Windows Server 2003 systems,
which can be tricked into
running unauthorized software
when an attacker sends them
maliciously encoded RPC
packets to the DNS server.

09.05.2007Microsoft: Daylight Saving Fix for $4000 in Extended Support
Microsoft have decided to
reduce the pricing of a patch
to fix the new March 11 date
for Daylight Saving Time (DST)
from a whopping $40,000 to
a mere $4000 for products
that have left mainstream
support and have entered the
"Extended" support phase,
according to
Microsoft watcher Mary Jo
Foley.
Products
affected are Windows 2000,
Exchange Server 2000 and
Outlook 2000,
among
others. Microsoft explains
in a PowerPoint document
distributed to
analysts
"For
products that have entered
into the Extended Support
phase, Microsoft will provide
customers with the opportunity
to purchase the DST 2007
hotfix at a reduced price of
Four Thousand Dollars (US
$4,000). Customers will
only be charged a single fee
of $4,000 to obtain all
hotfixes, for products in
Extended Support phase, needed
to update their systems for
DST 2007.
"For
customers who have previously
purchased DST 2007 hotfixes
for products in Extended
Support, Microsoft will
reimburse the difference to
them under the new pricing
category."
A
Microsoft spokesman was quoted
saying the $4,000 price
represents a "substantial
discount" and that it was
merely to "cover costs".

03.10.2006Nvidia pinpoints 8800 slowdown cause, delays fix
We reported a couple of weeks
ago about a problem with
seemingly random drops in
performance from GeForce 8800
cards, especially the 320MB
version of the GeForce 8800
GTS. At that time, Nvidia
acknowledged the problem and
said it expected to have a fix
some time in July. The month
ended without a fix, but
Nvidia has given us an update
on its progress.
Nvidia confirmed
that, as we suspected, the
slowdowns are caused by a
texture management issue,
which would explain why 320MB
cards are affected most often.
The company says the root of
the problem is applications
failing to evict unneeded
textures properly. The video
card's drivers must account
for this behavior and work
around it.
Unfortunately, Nvidia also
says the problem is more
complex than it originally
thought, so the fix won't be
available until late August or
early September. When it
comes, the initial fix will
only cover DirectX 9. A fix
for DX10 will come later.

03.08.2007Will replication in Exchange Server 2007 SP1 woo IT?
With the first service pack for Exchange Server 2007 due out at any time, the question is whether or not some of its new replication features will get
IT managers to jumpstart their migrations from older Exchange platforms on to the new messaging server.
Microsoft has promised
Exchange Server 2007 SP1 for the fourth quarter of this year. The big new feature will be standby continuous replication, or SCR, which lets IT
managers replicate an Exchange Server to another location, which could then be activated if there were a disaster at the company's main location.
Exchange Server 2007 came with local continuous replication and cluster continuous replication. The LCR copies the Exchange Server
onto another location on the same server, while CCR gives IT manager's instant fail-over to another server at the same location. The addition of SCR
means IT managers will have a third copy of the Exchange Server at a remote location, although it has to be activated manually.

So you downloaded the new

some of your icons go?
The WLM Beta team

The
problem was a result of errors
within some of the programs
entry points which caused them

For the fix to apply, you must
sign out of WLM and sign back

30-60 more minutes and then

the fix to reach every

05.05.2006Microsoft to release November fixes
Microsoft is preparing to release a pair of updates next Tuesday.
The company said in an advance notice that the November edition of the
'Patch Tuesday' release will include one fix labeled 'critical' and a second labeled 'important.'
The critical fix
addresses a vulnerability in the Microsoft XML Core Services component in Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, 2008 and Windows Vista. While Microsoft did
not disclose the exact nature of the vulnerability, the company said that if exploited it could allow an attacker to remotely execute code on a
targeted system.
While the second flaw could also allow an attacker to remotely execute code, Microsoft rated the issue as an
'important' risk. The vulnerability lies within a component in Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Server 2008 and Windows Vista.
Microsoft offered little more on the nature of the vulnerability. The company typically refrains from disclosing specific details on a flaw until a
fix can be released.
The November update comes just two weeks after the disclosure and patching of another critical vulnerability in a
Windows component. Shortly after the company posted the fix, an attack for the flaw was reported.
Microsoft is planning to release the
update next Tuesday. The update is typically released by early afternoon US Pacific time.
