VBA and Office 14

There's been some discussion on this thread on Slashdot, (updated) which started from this article in The Register UK.

To be clear, Microsoft is not replacing VBA with VSTA or VSTO in Office for Windows .  (though VSTA and VSTO are still important developer tools for Office 14)

VBA is here to stay, as was announced some time back by Steven Sinofsky.

Tools: Microsoft Office 2003 to Office 2007 guide

One of my biggest worries with the upgrade from MS Office 2003 to Office 2007 is that our users will keep the helpdesk busy with questions about the new user interfaces of Word 2007, Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 2007. The changes are really big. Microsoft now offers a very useful and easy-to-use tool which allows users to find the new locations of commands they know from former Office versions.

So far there are guides for Word 2003 to Word 2007, Excel 2003 to Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 2003 to PowerPoint 2007. They are all flash applications simulating these three Office programs. If you click on a function of Word 2003, for example, the flash tool will run a short animation showing you where you can find this function in Word 2007.

Excel Calculation Issue Update (Fix Available)

Two weeks ago, we posted about an issue involving the calculation of numbers around 65,535 and 65,536. As of today, fixes for this issue in Excel 2007 and Excel Services 2007 are available for download from the following locations:

- Excel 2007

- 64-bit Excel Services 2007

- 32-bit Excel Services 2007

KB Articles have been posted as well:

- Excel 2007

- Excel Services 2007

We are in the process of adding this fix to Microsoft Update so that it will get automatically pushed to users running Excel 2007 or Excel Services 2007. Additionally, the fix will also be contained in the first service pack of Office 2007 when it is released (the release date for SP1 of Office 2007 has not been finalized).

Thank you for your patience,

Microsoft Fixes Excel Calculation Bug

Microsoft says it has fixed a much publicized Excel 2007 bug which caused the spreadsheet program to display erroneous calculation results. The Excel team explained the issue this way: of the countless different floating point numbers Excel 2007 can store, there are six floating numbers using binary representation that cause the problem. Apparently for calculations that amount to around 65,535, Excel 2007 would return a value of 100,000 instead of 65,535. Thus, for instance, if you multiplied 850 by 77.1, the program would display 100,000 instead of 65,535, but if you consequently multiplied the result by 2, you would get 131,070, the correct answer. The issue, according to the Excel staff, was introduced when Microsofts development team made changes to the Excel calculation logic in Office 2007.

However, all of that is now in the past: in an Oct. 9 posting on the Excel section of MSDN the Excel Team served notice that, " as of today, fixes for this issue in Excel 2007 and Excel Services 2007 are available for download. " The team has also added the fix to Microsoft Update, " so that it will get automatically pushed to users running Excel 2007 or Excel Services 2008. " The fix will be included in the first service pack of Office 2007 when its released, though that date has not yet been finalized.

Microsoft announces Office security initiative

Following recent security issues with its Office suite, Microsoft has announced a move to provide tighter restrictions to cut back on widespread zero-day attacks.

Microsoft is calling the first new security tool http://www.microsoft.com/techn et/security/advisory/937696.ms px>Microsoft Office Isolated Conversion Environment (MOICE). This update adds additional checks when users of an older version of Office open up a 2007 format document. Previously, it was fairly easy for users to implement malicious code in, for example, a Microsoft Excel 2007 document and attack users who opened it with Excel 2003.

Users must install the update, but according to Heise Security, it also causes other compatibility issues. All macros are automatically disabled when converted with MOICE, and by default files than take longer tha 45 seconds to convert will be blocked. A couple minor PowerPoint issues are also affected by MOICE...

Microsoft to support Chinese document standard

The company on Monday is expected to announce that it is sponsoring an open-source project to create a converter between Ecma Open XML--a set of file formats closely tied to Microsoft Office--and a Chinese national standard called Unified Office Format (UOF).

Also on Monday, the company is expected to make available beta versions of previously announced translators between PowerPoint and Excel and corresponding applications that support the OpenDocument Format, or ODF.

The converters, to be http://sourceforge.net/project s/odftranslator/>available on the SourceForge.net site, let people open and save documents in either the Ecma Open XML formats or ODF. An initial translator for Word was released earlier this year; those for PowerPoint and Excel are expected to be completed by the end of the year. ..

Microsoft delays Office converters for Mac

As it tries to finish the next version of Office for the Mac, Microsoft has delayed efforts to enable current users of the productivity software to work with the new file formats used in the latest Windows version of the desktop software.

Microsoft now says a plug-in that will allow Office 2004 to fully work with the new formats won't be ready until six to eight weeks after the Office 2008 for Mac software suite ships, sometime in the second half of this year. Instead, the company is offering a separate downloadable converter program, starting Tuesday, designed to enable Office for Mac users to convert Word 2007's .docx files to the Rich Text Format, or RTF, which can be read by all Mac OS X versions of Office.

The Redmond, Wash., software giant said it hopes to have similar conversion tools for Excel and PowerPoint by the summer. This is not the first time Microsoft has pushed out its plans for Mac support for the new Office file formats. In December, Microsoft said a conversion tool for the formats, originally expected around the time of the product's January mainstream launch, wouldn't come until March or April. ..

Microsoft Acknowledges Floating Point Bug in Excel 2007

It's the type of bug that, when discovered twenty years ago on the world's leading spreadsheets of the time, generated controversy and sent thousands back to their software stores for refunds: Excel 2007 has a bug with the display of floating-point values, a Microsoft developer confirmed on his team's blog yesterday. BetaNews confirmed the bug's existence, which leads to some values in floating-point multiplication to be "rounded" to incorrect values.

The problem appears to be with certain kinds of pairs of values whose product is either 216 (65,536) or 216 - 1 (65,535). When one or both factors has floating-point precision but is only slightly fractional - meaning, it has perhaps one or two decimal places but is otherwise not "imaginary," to borrow its mathematical meaning - Excel renders the product as 100,000 instead.
