Mininova: 1 Million Torrents Uploaded

First it breaks the 3 billion .torrent download mark, then Alexa ranks it as the 46th most visited website on the Internet, and now Mininova can claim that it has had over 1,000,000th torrents uploaded to it. Considering the bittorent site only hosts torrents that are uploaded by its users, a million torrents is quite an achievement. Last year in November, that number was half what it is now. If this trend continues, sooner or later someone (RIAA/MPAA/CRIA, you name it) is going to be knocking at, no scratch that, is going to be breaking down the site’s owner’s door. Mininova founder Niek has said that the few errors that the site spits out time and again, due to the traffic increase, are being worked on and promises an improvement.

The Pirate Bay trial, '80% of our torrents are legal'

The ongoing trial for The Pirate Bay is attracting international attention over the court case that could change the internet forever. Neowin has been keeping up with the trial and the latest argument from TPB ( The Pirate Bay) is that "n internal survey revealed that 80% of 1000 torrents observed are, in fact, legal". Sunde, the spokes person for TPB, went on to argue that there is more copyrighted material on YouTube than on TPB. The prosecutors are also trying to establish that a hierarchy does exist at TPB but appear to be failing at solidifying their case. "Someone must ultimately decide whether to put up a certain text or graphic," asked Roswall. "No," Neij replied. "Why?

Antipiracy investigators run afoul of Swiss law in P2P sweep

Part of the reason the RIAA is so relentless with its legal campaign against file-sharing in the US is that the group can readily obtain the names and addresses of broadband subscribers via John Doe lawsuits. In contrast, the motion picture and music industries have had mixed results with that strategy in Europe, and one firm retained by Big Content is under fire in Switzerland for what the Swiss government says are illegal tactics.

Logistep, which calls itself a "specialized privately controlled Anti-Piracy Company" that operates in Switzerland, has run afoul of the Eidgenössische Datenschutz und Öffentlichkeitsbeauftragte, the Swiss agency tasked with overseeing data protection, according to the IDG News Service. Unlike US law, which allows the identity of an ISP subscriber to be revealed via a civil action, Swiss law requires a criminal case to be filed in order for the data to be divulged.

Surge in encrypted torrents blindsides record biz

The legal crackdown and publicity blitz aimed at people who share music, videos and software online may be having an unintended consequence for the troubled record industry. The number of file-sharers disguising their BitTorrent activity with encryption is skyrocketing.

Figures from a large UK ISP obtained by The Register show that the portion of BitTorrent traffic encrypted by file-sharers has risen 10-fold in the last 12 months, from four to 40 per cent.

This time last year, unencrypted torrents accounted for about 500Mbit/s of bandwidth, while files that had been scrambled by uploaders swallowed just 20Mbit/s.

The latest data shows that bandwidth used by unencrypted torrents has fallen to 350Mbit/s. Sharing of masked music, video and software has meanwhile exploded to average more than 200Mbit/s.

The Hydra Project, THP for short, is developed with privacy, anonymity and survivability in mind. One of innovative features of the project is to make an OpenID for users of private BitTorrent sites so their login information and upload/download ratios can be shared across different websites. The torrents can also be shared among different trackers. This ensures that user ratios and uploaded torrents will not be lost if for some reason one of the BitTorrent trackers ceases to exist.

No Internet Explorer in Windows 7 version for Europe

Microsoft is planning on shipping a version of Windows 7 to Europe that will not include Internet Explorer. This is according to a confidential memo that was sent to PC makers and obtained by CNET. It is likely that Microsoft is reacting to the European Union concerns that by bundling Internet Explorer with Windows 7 it is being anti-competitive in the browser market. Microsoft's lawyers responded by saying "Our decision to only offer IE separately from Windows 7 in Europe cannot, of course, preclude the possibility of alternative approaches emerging through Commission processes.
