Essential Business Server: Released to Manufacturing

Carlene Chmaj: Excerpt from the post on the EBS blog by general manager Eric Kidd:

Id like to do two things right off the bat in this, my first, blog post here

1) Announce that Windows Essential Business Server 2008 has reached RTM! (English now, more languages to come soon)

2) Extend my sincere gratitude to the many customers, MVPs, users, partners and enthusiasts that helped us build what we hope proves to be an exceptional product. Thank you.

The team (at Microsoft and extended by the community mentioned above) has been hard at work on this for a long time - Beta 1 shipped in December 2006 and were now very close to general availability (GA) when well have the privilege of hearing from customers what they like and what we can make better. The final step in release comes with our November 12 product launch (previously announced), which kicks-off GA. See Eric Watsons earlier blog entry describing the difference between the RTM and GA milestones.

Microsoft to make Windows Home Server available as OEM product

Up until now, one of the main drawbacks to the upcoming Windows Home Server was that the product was only going to be available on select, prebuilt systems from Integrated System Vendors (ISVs). Microsoft has apparently changed its mind on this score—one of the major announcements in Gates' keynote address at WINHEC today is the news that WHS will be directly available as an OEM product.

"Digital devices and digital media are now an essential part of so many aspects of our lives, and their importance continues to grow," said Microsoft chairman Bill Gates at WINHEC. "With Windows Home Server, we're launching a new category of consumer products that will make it much easier for people to connect to their digital content and share experiences with friends and family no matter where they are."

This is a move that makes a lot of sense for Microsoft's target market, as it's much more cost-effective to reposition an older or secondary system as a home server than it is to justify purchasing an entirely new system specifically for that purpose—especially when you have to justify the additional cost to a spouse. Buyers looking for a specifically-purposed home server system, however, will still have a range of options including HP's MediaSmart Server or the upcoming Medion Home Server, with the latter available in 500GB to 2TB storage flavors...

Microsoft to raise Windows Small Business Server price 80 percent

When Microsoft starts shipping its Windows Small Business Server 2008 product later this year, its price will be substantially higher as much as 80 percent than the current version of Small Business Server.

Surprisingly, some testers and at least one market researcher don’t seem fazed by the change. While base prices are higher, users are going to get more functionality, performance and product with the new release, they said.

Review: Windows Essential Business Server 2008 RC1

Recently, Microsoft released its second release candidate build, RC1, of Windows Essential Business Server, or EBS, a midmarket server solution for businesses with 50 to 300 users and computers.

Why is a "solution" needed? Microsoft researched the midmarket environment and found that most shops this size have one, maybe two, IT-specific employees who are essentially generalists. They have a wide breadth but a shallow depth about a lot of technologies, and spend most of their time reacting to problems on the network. They're interested in security, easing support burdens, deploying and managing devices and software, keeping track of assets, and backing up and restoring their professional assets. In other words, they face a lot of the same problems as larger organizations, but they don't have a formalized structure, a proactive nature or a huge budget to address problems.

Enter EBS, which aims to try to solve some of these issues and overlay a "best practices"-based approach for businesses like these.
