EXCLUSIVE: New security flaw in IE
A new flaw in Internet Explorer could be exploited to launch spoof-based attacks, or access and change data on vulnerable PCs, security experts have warned.
The problem lies in the way Microsoft has implemented a JavaScript component in its Web browser, security researcher Amit Klein wrote in a research document. Internet Explorer does not validate some data fields provided by a PC when the component, called XmlHttpRequest, is used, he wrote.

Another security hole found in IE
Secunia published an advisory on Tuesday stating that an error could be exploited to fake the address bar in a browser window. This tactic could be used in phishing scams that attempt to trick people into believing they are on a legitimate site, when in fact they are viewing a fraudulent Web page. Phishing is a prevalent type of online scam that seeks to pilfer personal information from unsuspecting Internet users. The scams typically combine spam e-mail with fraudulent Web sites that appear to come from a trusted source, such as a credit card company or a bank.

28.10.2007NOD32 2.70.23
ESET NOD32 Antivirus offers
superior, comprehensive
protection, the fastest
scanning throughput, and the
least performance impact of
any solution. Keep your
important information safe
& stay productive with
peace of mind. Running
separate applications for
viruses, hackers, adware, and
spyware can slow your PC, be
difficult to manage, and
provide questionable
protection. Beware of large,
bloated internet security
suites that consume hundreds
of megabytes on your PC. These
typically exist because
vendors have acquired products
and 'bundled' them together.
In contrast, ESET NOD32 was
designed from the core as a
single, highly-optimized
engine that works as a unified
Anti-Threat system to protect
against a broad spectrum of
malware. Viruses, worms,
spyware, and other malicious
attacks, which are constantly
evolving. ESET NOD32 utilizes
patent-pending ThreatSense
Technology to detect
tomorrow's threats in
real-time, by analyzing code
execution for malicious intent
- keeping you ahead of the
malware-writers.

21.12.2006Hacking Vista's Smart Cards
The recent wave of smart card hacks have been aimed mainly at the cards chip and bypassing physical security, but not this latest one: A former
Microsoft security team member has demonstrated an attack that compromises the smart cards middleware plug-in for Vista machines. (See
Black Hat Researcher Hacks Credit Cards and
'Gecko' Penetrates Building Access Systems.)
Researcher Dan Griffin, who previously worked for Microsoft on its smart card
program, has developed a custom fuzzing tool that hacks smart card and third-party vendors plug-in software that use Microsofts Smart Card Minidriver
Interface, which is built into Vista. "Im not focusing on the smart card chip," Griffin says. "If I just attack a few specific parts
, it will fall over."
Griffin says these smart cards being used for building and machine access come with Java code
that allows you to write malicious code into the card. "Writing a hacker applet on the card is not that hard or far-fetched," he says. And he
stresses that its "not Microsoft code I blow up," but the smart card or third-party plug-in vendors.

Schneier: Beware of security products
Leading security expert Bruce Schneier has warned businesses to beware of buying shoddy security products.
Bruce Schneier,
founder and chief technical officer of BT Counterpane, issued the warning at the RSA Conference Europe 2007 in London on Tuesday. He told delegates
that they should not necessarily trust security vendors to give a fair representation of the security of those products.
"There
might be a political bent to security decisions, or there might be a marketing bent," said Schneier. "People selling smart cards will
do a lot to convince us that smart cards are the answer to security problems. For every company that's secure, there's at least one 'me too'."
