vLite 1.1.6 beta - SP Slipstream

nuhi: Service Pack Slipstream support. Consider that feature a true beta test.

vLite had a hidden Slipstream page since the service pack betas so this was not so hard to adjust. You can see it by running older vLite with /sptest switch .

However it stopped working on the final SP1 when MS locked it down.
So this version should work again. Try this latest one and let me know of any issues with the Slipstream.

Of course it is always better to either capture or get a preintegrated DVD because MS said that integrating is not recommended before SP2 is out.

New Project: vLite - Vista Lite

Windows Vista from Microsoft takes a lot of resources, we all know that. So here is the tool for easy removal of the unwanted components in order to make Vista run faster and to your liking. vLite can also create the bootable ISO and apply the tweaks directly.

This tool doesn't use any kind of hacking, all files and registry entries are protected as they would be if you install the full version only without the components you select for the removal.

It configures the installation directly, before the installation, meaning you'll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall.

Microsoft comes clean on Vista SP1 driver and vLite issues

As you may have been aware having certain drivers installed on Vista will prevent SP1 from installing. Microsoft had not exactly been forthcoming on which drivers but has now made the list available to the public.

The company listed the affected drivers in a support article. It consists of mostly audio and display drivers but there are warnings for fingerprint readers as well.

Additionally, users are warned against using vLite to strip features out of a Vista installation and install using it. Microsoft says that could also prevent the installation of Vista SP1. The previous support article lists possible causes and solutions.

Free utility condenses Windows Vista from 13GB to 1.4GB

A Croatian college student has created a utility that installs a seriously stripped-down Windows Vista, saying the heft of Microsoft's biggest desktop OS was just too big to believe. "Who can justify a 15GB operating system?" asked Dino Nuhagic, a fifth-year student from Split, a Croatian city on the Adriatic. Not Nuhagic, or the uncounted users who have turned to his creation, vLite.

vLite, a free program that lets users pick and choose which Vista components, hotfixes, drivers and even language packs are installed, then builds a disk image that can be burned to a DVD for unattended installation of the operating system.

"Why did I do it? Well, it's performance and work environment," said Nuhagic when asked why he came up with vLite. "Performance, that's easy to explain. The less things running, the more responsive the OS. But the environment part is where it gets down to personal preference."

Ballmer: Apple's Mac growth is a "rounding error"

Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer is a man who's not afraid to talk down his competitors. When Apple initially released the iPhone, he stated that it had no chance of gaining a significant market share. Now, when speaking to a group of market analysts, he has said that the growth that the Cupertino company is seeing with their Mac product range can be attributed to a rounding error. Whilst he was at the 2009 Financial Analyst Meeting, Ballmer said, "Share versus Apple, you know, we think we may have ticked up a little tick, but when you get right down to it, it's a rounding error.

Microsoft takes on 404 pages with Live Search

Microsoft plans to convert the 404 error pages on the microsoft.com domain, as well as other websites the company owns, to error pages with Live Search capabilities. This will allow Microsoft's customers to search for what they were looking for right away, instead of being stuck at a 404 error page that is equivalent to hitting a dead end.

Furthermore, Microsoft has also released a toolkit for webmasters who also want to transform their 404 pages to search-enabled pages. The 1.13MB Web Page Error Toolkit, a customizable ASP.net application that replaces the default error page on one's IIS server, is not limited to Live Search; web admins can choose whichever search engine they prefer.

Vista, Acronis TrueImage 11 and GRUB Error 22

Jonathan Schlaffer: Those of you with Vista know that there can be boot problems after you have cloned your existing installation to a faster or larger hard drive (it works best when its both). And, sometimes after cloning, there can be activation issues as well which I have encountered in the past.

Some say those issues are gone due to updates to the way WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) works in Vista but Microsoft should rename their DRM protection system to Windows Genuine Annoyance.

These problems did not exist under XP but it appears that Vista places undue importance on the hard drive when deciding whether or not to deactivate itself. I am aware that SP1 changes the way WGA works slightly but that cannot change what has happened in the past.

Human error tops the list of security threats

IT managers also say its insider threats that really worry them the most
When it comes to security, human threats score much higher than those posed by technology. So says a new survey by consulting firm Deloitte of more than 100 technology, media and telecommunications companies worldwide.

Seventy-five per cent of companies listed human error as the leading cause of security failures such as breakdowns and systems outages. Forty-eight per cent also cited operations and technology lapses as key causes of security failures. Problems resulting from third parties such as contractors and business partners, meanwhile, received 28 per cent of the votes as a root cause of security failures.

Programming error gives CT scan patients radiation overdose

In a rather off-the-track technology related report, a hospital named Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has come into a bit of trouble due to problems with its CT scanner; a programming error has caused the machine to give patients eight times the maximum amount of radiation that's nominal. According to the LA Times, the hospital recently began utilizing a new protocol in order to create a specialized type of scan used to diagnose strokes, which unfortunately went a bit wrong. In order to use said protocol, the machine had to be reset, thus overriding the pre-programmed instructions that were included with the scanner when it was installed.
