x64 Kernel patch causes random restarts, fix on the way

Microsoft has disclosed that update 932596, a patch released for the Kernel Patch Protection feature that is included with x64 versions of Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, seems to be causing random restarts on certain machines. A Stop error is then generated (error code 0x0000001E, 0x000000D1, or another Stop error code). x86 versions of Windows are not affected since they do not include the Kernel Patch Protection feature (also known as PatchGuard), a technology that is meant to prevent third-party interventions into the core of the operating system.

Ballmer: Apple's Mac growth is a "rounding error"

Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer is a man who's not afraid to talk down his competitors. When Apple initially released the iPhone, he stated that it had no chance of gaining a significant market share. Now, when speaking to a group of market analysts, he has said that the growth that the Cupertino company is seeing with their Mac product range can be attributed to a rounding error. Whilst he was at the 2009 Financial Analyst Meeting, Ballmer said, "Share versus Apple, you know, we think we may have ticked up a little tick, but when you get right down to it, it's a rounding error.

Microsoft takes on 404 pages with Live Search

Microsoft plans to convert the 404 error pages on the microsoft.com domain, as well as other websites the company owns, to error pages with Live Search capabilities. Furthermore, Microsoft has also released a toolkit for webmasters who also want to transform their 404 pages to search-enabled pages. The 1.13MB Web Page Error Toolkit, a customizable ASP.net application that replaces the default error page on one's IIS server, is not limited to Live Search; web admins can choose whichever search engine they prefer.

Microsoft cites human error in anti-piracy malfunction

Last week's malfunction of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy mechanism was caused when new software code was accidentally put on the servers running the system, before those servers had been made ready for the code, according to a post last night by Alex Kochis, WGA senior product manager. Kochis writes:Kochis explains in the post that the problem made some computers fail the anti-piracy validation and activation processes, causing them to lose advanced Windows features and get a "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message, until the WGA system was fixed and people were able to properly activate and validate their computers.

New hacking technique exploits common programming error

Researchers at Watchfire Inc. say they have discovered a reliable method for exploiting a common programming error, which until now had been considered simply a quality problem and not a security vulnerability.

Jonathan Afek and Adi Sharabani of Watchfire stumbled upon the method for remotely exploiting dangling pointers by chance while they were running the company's AppScan software against a Web server. The server crashed in the middle of the scan and after some investigation, the pair found that a dangling pointer had been the culprit. This wasn't a surprising result, given that these coding errors are well-known for causing crashes at odd times. But after some further experimentation, Afek and Sharabani found that they could cause the crash intentionally by sending a specially crafted URL to the server and began looking for a way to run their own code on the target machine.

Afek, a senior security researcher at Watchfire, will give a presentation on the technique at the Black Hat Briefings in Las Vegas in August...

Human error tops the list of security threats

IT managers also say its insider threats that really worry them the most
When it comes to security, human threats score much higher than those posed by technology. So says a new survey by consulting firm Deloitte of more than 100 technology, media and telecommunications companies worldwide.

Seventy-five per cent of companies listed human error as the leading cause of security failures such as breakdowns and systems outages. Forty-eight per cent also cited operations and technology lapses as key causes of security failures. Problems resulting from third parties such as contractors and business partners, meanwhile, received 28 per cent of the votes as a root cause of security failures.

Programming error gives CT scan patients radiation overdose

In a rather off-the-track technology related report, a hospital named Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has come into a bit of trouble due to problems with its CT scanner; a programming error has caused the machine to give patients eight times the maximum amount of radiation that's nominal. According to the LA Times, the hospital recently began utilizing a new protocol in order to create a specialized type of scan used to diagnose strokes, which unfortunately went a bit wrong. In order to use said protocol, the machine had to be reset, thus overriding the pre-programmed instructions that were included with the scanner when it was installed.

Microsoft blames human error for WGA glitch

Microsoft blamed human error for a Windows Genuine Advantage problem that identified legitimate Windows users as pirates last week. According to Alex Kochis, Microsoft senior product manager for WGA, new software was accidentally loaded onto the live servers running the system. Between Friday evening through Saturday afternoon, some users incorrectly failed the validation process, leaving them unable to use certain features. Affected users also saw a message in the corner of their screen that said "This copy of Windows is not genuine." While Microsoft quickly noticed the problem and rolled back the changes within a half hour, the problem continued to affect the validation service although the activation process was fixed in that time frame, said Kochis.

The company is implementing some changes to make sure a similar incident doesn't happen again. It is improving monitoring in order to find out sooner if there is a problem, he said. Microsoft is also adding checkpoints that should prevent accidental changes to the servers. It's troubling that someone can accidentally load wrong code into a live environment. Kochis clarified that an existing policy will automatically validate all users if the WGA servers are down but that in this case, the servers weren't down, so that policy didn't kick in. Maybe Microsoft should have taken the servers down while working on the problem?

MS admits Halo 3 'disc unreadable' errors

Microsoft has refused to reveal the cause behind a fresh wave of disc problems affecting Halo 3. The company told Register Hardware that it's aware of a problem which stops the game from loading correctly, but refused to give any further explanation.

Exact descriptions of the disc error differ between gamers, but all of the them who've encountered the issue report being presented with a message that says the disc is unreadable and can't be loaded.

For example, one reader told us that when trying to start a campaign or solo game, an error message appears on the screen saying the game can't be started. It then advises him to press button A on the control pad. However, a second error message states more specifically that game content can't be loaded and a progress bar hops continuously between one and 29 per cent.

Neowin: Submit to Newsdesk fixed

Due to an unseen error in our custom content management system, submissions to the newsdesk by members were being dropped rather than added to our panel. This unfortunate error has now been fixed, so if you have submitted news since the 14th of February and wondered why it hadn't shown up, now you know why!

Since the beginning of February, our coders have made over 100 changes to our NewsCP due to the addition of version control linking our test (beta) website with our live code. Bugs are fixed a lot quicker now, and you may of noticed significant improvements such as the panel in our comments pages, which has been drastically updated, with the addition of "Related News" as well as many "behind the scene" bug fixes.

Our CMS, which is unique to Neowin, has been continually improved since 2002 and re-written from the ground up -twice, which eventually moved us away from the core "Virtuanews" system base that we developed along with James Tingle for a year, up until August 2002 when he opted to take the project further on his own. Currently our coder team consists of up to 5 active contributers to bug fixing and improvements to our system.

Blue Screen of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained

Picture this: Its late at night, youre sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. Its actually a Windows stop screen, and is designed to do two things: tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue (studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what caused it is right there in front of you in blue and whiteand thats where we come in. Were going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error details, so you can fix the problem thats causing them.
