16.06.2007Mozilla Splits Thunderbird as Seperate subsidiary
Similar to what it did with Firefox a couple of years ago, the Mozilla Foundation has decided to spin Thunderbird off as a separate subsidiary. The
as-of-yet-unnamed subsidiary will be given $3 million in seed funding and the sole task of shepherding Thunderbird's development.
Thunderbird hit the 2.0 milestone earlier this year and is available in over 35 languages on all the major platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
But in contrast to Firefox, which has seen its market share soar since its 1.0 release, Thunderbird has struggled to catch the attention of PC users
around the world in the same way that Firefox has. Although Thunderbird is a solid, full-featured client, it faces competition from both free e-mail
clients available from Microsoft and Apple as well as from webmail apps.
Mozilla Foundation CEO Mitchell Baker first hinted at her plans
for Thunderbird in July. With the announcement, the Foundation hopes to energize Thunderbird development and adoption by giving it its own home within
the Foundation. In a post on her blog, Baker says that the seed funding will be used primarily to attract talented people "who are passionate about
e-mail and Internet communications."

19.09.2007Microsoft to Provide Retrofit for Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel
Microsoft Corp. today announced that it is taking a precautionary measure and voluntarily providing customers with a free retrofit to the Xbox 360
Wireless Racing Wheel.
The action is being taken after Microsoft was informed of a very small number of incidents of a
malfunction in the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel, in which a component in the wheel chassis may overheat and release smoke when the AC/DC power
supply is used to energize the wheel. There have been no reported incidences of fire, personal injury or property damage resulting from the component
failure in the wheel.
Owners of the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel should stop using the AC/DC power supply until they have
obtained their retrofit. They may continue to operate the wheel using battery power.
Owners of the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel
should visit
http://www.xbox.com/support or call Microsoft at (800) 4MY-XBOX (469-9269)
to register for the free retrofit and protect against the potential hazard described above. Instructions, if necessary, will be provided with the
retrofit. Microsoft is notifying and will be coordinating its response activities with the relevant regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission. This may affect delivery dates.

23.08.2007Hey dude, you're getting Linux on that Dell
After collecting some 1,800
new product and service ideas
from IT users and customers
using an online "suggestion
box," Dell Inc. has announced
that it's taking the user
suggestions seriously and will
soon debut and sell a new line
of certified, user-ready
Linux-loaded desktop and
laptop computers. The Dell
IdeaStorm Web site, where
customers and other IT
enthusiasts can offer
recommendations about future
Dell products and
configurations that they'd
want to buy, was started on
Feb. 16 by CEO Michael Dell,
who is looking for ways to
re-energize the company's
sales and financial
performance after several
disappointing quarters.
One post that got a
lot of interest was the idea
that Dell bring back a
reasonably priced laptop
computer that runs Linux. Just
a week after debuting the
IdeaStorm site, the company
said Friday night that the
Linux-loaded desktops and
laptops will be the first
user-generated suggestions
that it will follow. "It's
exciting to see the IdeaStorm
community's interest in
open-source solutions like
Linux and OpenOffice," the
company said in a post on the
Web site. "Your feedback has
been all about flexibility and
we have seen a consistent
request to provide platforms
that allow people to install
their operating system of
choice. We are listening, and
as a result, we are working
with Novell to certify our
corporate client products for
Linux, including our OptiPlex
desktops, Latitude notebooks
and Dell Precision
workstations. This is another
step towards ensuring that our
customers have a good
experience with Linux on our
systems."
