Hardening Windows XP Professional

Windows XP has considerably more functionality than Windows 2000. With this functionality come more services and more potential security holes. Some of the measures undertaken by IST to reduce the risk are outlined in the extracts below. These are the security-related sections IST follows when building a Windows XP image for distribution within Academic Support. NOTE: Most of these changes require you to sign on as an administrator. The first and most important change to be applied is to set a password on all user accounts. Next it is very strongly advised that you do not log on with an administrative account but rather a ?User? or ?Power User? account.

Feature Comparison: XP SP3 Professional vs. Vista SP1

Call it a sign of desperation, a new attempt to blow some wind in the sails of its latest platform, or a reaction to the proverbial last drop, but Microsoft is delivering its own perspective in terms of the comparison between its two Windows clients sharing the vast majority of the operating system market. Just ahead of the availability cut-off date for Windows XP through the OEM and retail channels, the Redmond company has “come out gunning” in a move designed to settle once and for good the XP vs. Vista face-off.

Intel's BIOS tool spells death bell for third party utilities

ECS is showing Intel's backup utility called the System Recovery Tool.

This utility sits inside the BIOS of a motherboard that of course, sports Intel's latest chipsets. The application features partition and disk image backup and recovery, just like a lot of third-party applications. However, being built inside the BIOS, it has the advantage of not needing any sort of boot or recovery CDs, rather pressing a function key (F3 in the case of ECS's boards) on a keyboard.

The image creation process is very simple - press the F3 key, pick the option Create new image, choose what partition will be backed up and the destination (different partition, CD, DVD medium).

You can expect this feature to come on many motherboards in near future.

Bitlocker encrypts only OS partition

Bink.nu was just at a session on Integrity in Windows Vista from Steve Riley. "This security guy from Microsoft is always great to listen to. He talked about Bitlocker (hard drive encryption), Mandatory Integrity Checker and how IE7 behaves on Vista", mentions Bink.nu.

Also mentioned was that the goal of Bitlocker is to protect the OS, not the user's data, when your data is on the same partition as the OS your lucky. Through the bitlocker UI it is not possible to encrypt a separate data partition, with the commandline tool you can though.

TechSpot: Windows 7 Dual Boot Guide, Remove Partition How to

Windows 7 has proved to be quite the drastic improvement over Vista, enough that it even has XP stragglers crawling out of the woodwork to check it out. Your chance to test drive the release candidate is now running thin, in fact, if you haven't tried the new OS until now you are better off postponing your plans for a week and installing the real thing. The final version of Windows 7 has already been sent to partners and is scheduled to debut publicly later this week on October 22.

More server problems, forum downtime

Last night one of our apache servers died, we don't know why or what caused it and we are still waiting for our server admin to respond to an email we sent.

Also the forum started mass doubling posts for almost every submission, sometimes triple posting a submission. Again we aren't sure whats causing that either. Marcel has put count queries back on the Master SQL database, which means the load on our Master is back to where it was last week..

I'm not really sure what we can do to fix these problems, but we have Dave and Marcel looking into it.

The forum is offline while Marcel does a topic recount.. this takes time and when thats complete the forums will re-open. Later today we should have the second apache server back up.. Hopefully there will be something in the logs that tell us what went wrong there.

I'd like to apologise for our downtime. Its very frustrating to me and I know that our valued members are getting annoyed at the constant server problems. I will be looking into getting professional advice next week, to see if we can resolve some issues.

Thanks to everyone for the continued patience while we try to resolve the issues.

Simple guide to test Vista SP1 RC1 on a separate partition

Long Zheng: A couple of people, dozen at max, have expressed interest in testing out the soon-to-be-public Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate release. There are many ways of installing and testing operating systems and even more so service packs so it can be rather confusing and cumbersome experience for some people out there. Out of all the possibilities, I do myself and recommend everyone to always start fresh, but that doesnt always mean from the command prompt.

Whilst release candidate will be a very good representation of the final product early next year, it still means youll have to forfeit this release sooner or later so it is not recommended you replace your existing Windows installation with it. Especially with all the problems people have been running into uninstalling their service pack betas which itself sounds like a really bad idea anyway, its ideal to set up a fresh install. And the most convenient fresh install is on a separate partition on existing disks.

Formerly the process of splitting a partition involved third-party software which is time-consuming and sometimes unreliable, however a less-known disk management function in Windows Vista will simplify all that.

Halo 3's Master Chief Invades Tussauds' Vegas Museum

Note to Elvis, Princess Diana, and Britney Spears: Take cover!

Master Chief, the plasma-ray packing protagonist in Microsoft's forthcoming Halo 3 videogame, will stand alongside the other celebrities in Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Las Vegas.

The "life-sized" figure of Master Chief was unveiled at a ceremony at the famed museum on the Strip last week. The wax version of the futuristic soldier stands an impressive 7-foot, 2-inches tall. That beats by an inch what was until now the museum's tallest resident -- a statue of NBA star Shaquille O'Neal.

Master Chief is the first videogame character to be enshrined in a wax museum, according to Tussauds officials.

The event is the latest indication that Halo 3, set to debut on September 25th for the Xbox 360 console, will smash sales records for game discs. Internet retailers such as Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and BestBuy.com have taken more than a million pre-orders for the first person shooter. ..

Cooler Master HAF 932 Full Tower ATX case review

For the ultimate gaming machine the full tower ATX case has become the weapon of choice, though evidently not for its portability or value. Rather gamers with high-end systems are turning to the full tower ATX form factor simply so they can comfortably fit all their extreme hardware. With flagship GeForce and Radeon graphics cards now measuring over 9" long (23cm) typical mid-size cases are no longer sufficient. The Cooler Master HAF 932 is a truly impressive looking gaming case without being over the top in anyway. The design is clean yet aggressive at the same time, which is not easy to accomplish.

Gateway Sheds Professional Computer Division

Gateway continued to reposition itself following its sale to Acer on Monday, saying that it had sold its professional division -- which includes desktops, laptops, and tablets -- to MPC (formerly Micron) for an undisclosed sum.

While initially the transition will be seamless to customers, within one year the MPC brand will replace Gateway's on professional products. Support relationships will be assumed immediately.

With Gateway's professional unit in tow, MPC will have annual sales of about $1.1 billion USD with 1,000 employees. "Virtually all" of Gateway's employees in the professional division have been transitioned to new jobs within MPC, the companies said.

Apple Updates Boot Camp Software

Apple has updated its beta Boot Camp software to version 1.1.2. The software lets owners of Intel Macs install Windows XP on their Mac in a separate partition, allowing users to choose which operating system to boot up to on startup. The new version offers support for all the latest Intel-based Macs, and also makes it easier to partition hard disks for the installation of Windows XP by offering partitioning presets.

Boot Camp 1.1.2 lets users install Windows XP on any internal disk; adds support for built-in iSight cameras and microphones; supports Apple's USB modem, trackpad scrolling and right-clicking on a notebook; and furnishes improved keyboard support.

Apple notes that installation is relatively painless: "If you previously installed Boot Camp beta, you can easily update to Boot Camp 1.1.2 beta. You don't need to partition your hard drive again (unless you want to change its size) or reinstall your Macintosh and Windows software or documents, but it's very important to update the Boot Camp Assistant software, create a new Macintosh Drivers for Windows CD and install the updated software it contains on Windows XP."

Microsoft blacklists leaked Windows 7 OEM key

Web address system faces changes

The way the internet handles website domains is going to change, following an update to the core "addressing system".

If we continue with the current way of allocating web addresses, we will run out of available domain names by 2011.

So the internet's master address book is being updated to include records written in a new format, IP version 6, which will help to create millions of new potential web addresses.

The problem occurs because people and the internet use two different methods to call up web pages: we type words into the address bar of our browser, whereas our computers translate that into a string of numbers to find the page that you are looking for. This numerical string is taken from the internet's master address book of domains.
