HTC Magic available for pre-order from Vodafone

With an expected release of 5th May, fans of the HTC Magic will now be able to pre-order it, and be the first to receive the device when it launches in Europe. The handset will be free for 18 month contracts at £35 per month or greater, and £195.74 or £293.62 for 18 month contracts at £30 per month or lower from Vodafone. The Magic is the widely anticipated successor to the T-Mobile G1, or the Dream, as it is known to the rest of the world, from handset manufacturer HTC. Microsoft Exchange support shown on HTC Magic

Bonnie Cha: Earlier on Thursday, we reported on the Singapore HTC Magic launch and learned from our friends at CNET Asia that HTC has two more Google Android devices planned for the year. Great to hear, but was there more immediate good news that flew under the radar?

In Damian Koh's hands-on report of the Magic, right there in the sixth picture, plain as day, is Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support on the HTC Magic (kudos to CNET News reporter Stephen Shankland for noticing)...

Intel's BIOS tool spells death bell for third party utilities

ECS is showing Intel's backup utility called the System Recovery Tool.

This utility sits inside the BIOS of a motherboard that of course, sports Intel's latest chipsets. The application features partition and disk image backup and recovery, just like a lot of third-party applications. However, being built inside the BIOS, it has the advantage of not needing any sort of boot or recovery CDs, rather pressing a function key (F3 in the case of ECS's boards) on a keyboard.

The image creation process is very simple - press the F3 key, pick the option Create new image, choose what partition will be backed up and the destination (different partition, CD, DVD medium).

You can expect this feature to come on many motherboards in near future.

Bitlocker encrypts only OS partition

Bink.nu was just at a session on Integrity in Windows Vista from Steve Riley. "This security guy from Microsoft is always great to listen to. He talked about Bitlocker (hard drive encryption), Mandatory Integrity Checker and how IE7 behaves on Vista", mentions Bink.nu.

Also mentioned was that the goal of Bitlocker is to protect the OS, not the user's data, when your data is on the same partition as the OS your lucky. Through the bitlocker UI it is not possible to encrypt a separate data partition, with the commandline tool you can though.

TechSpot: Windows 7 Dual Boot Guide, Remove Partition How to

Windows 7 has proved to be quite the drastic improvement over Vista, enough that it even has XP stragglers crawling out of the woodwork to check it out. Your chance to test drive the release candidate is now running thin, in fact, if you haven't tried the new OS until now you are better off postponing your plans for a week and installing the real thing. The final version of Windows 7 has already been sent to partners and is scheduled to debut publicly later this week on October 22.

Simple guide to test Vista SP1 RC1 on a separate partition

Long Zheng: A couple of people, dozen at max, have expressed interest in testing out the soon-to-be-public Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate release. There are many ways of installing and testing operating systems and even more so service packs so it can be rather confusing and cumbersome experience for some people out there. Out of all the possibilities, I do myself and recommend everyone to always start fresh, but that doesnt always mean from the command prompt.

Whilst release candidate will be a very good representation of the final product early next year, it still means youll have to forfeit this release sooner or later so it is not recommended you replace your existing Windows installation with it. Especially with all the problems people have been running into uninstalling their service pack betas which itself sounds like a really bad idea anyway, its ideal to set up a fresh install. And the most convenient fresh install is on a separate partition on existing disks.

Formerly the process of splitting a partition involved third-party software which is time-consuming and sometimes unreliable, however a less-known disk management function in Windows Vista will simplify all that.

Dark Messiah Might and Magic Launch Trailer

I don't normally post about trailers or movies, but since Dark Messiah Might and Magic (they dropped the of, I think?) launches tomorrow I figured why not. This trailer will absolutely get your blood pumping for the game, I know I can't wait to play it tomorrow now. Wowzers.

Right now the only mirror I can see is the Fileplanet mirror, sorry guys. I know how some of you hate Fileplanet and all. I'll look for some more mirrors during the day and add them once I find them. Feel free to add them to the comments area as well.

Just to remind you, Dark Messiah Might and Magic launches on Steam tomorrow October 25 at 10AM Eastern Time  for North America only. The rest of the world launches on Steam on October 27 at 10AM GMT.

The video runs for 2 minutes and 34 seconds, and is really stunning. Not the greatest quality mind you, especially for a 20 meg WMV file, but it works. Enjoy.

Microsoft Surface vs. CNN's Magic Wall

John McCain and Barack Obama haven't been discussing tech issues much, but this election season has showcased technology in a different way. Multi-touch, big-screen interfaces are all the rage among the cable news networks -- most notably CNN and its "Magic Wall," which even earned its own Saturday Night Live spoof. More recently, NBC got into the act by bringing in a Microsoft Surface tabletop computer, putting a high-tech sheen on its political coverage.

The concepts are similar, the implementations very different.

Apple Updates Boot Camp Software

Apple has updated its beta Boot Camp software to version 1.1.2. The software lets owners of Intel Macs install Windows XP on their Mac in a separate partition, allowing users to choose which operating system to boot up to on startup. The new version offers support for all the latest Intel-based Macs, and also makes it easier to partition hard disks for the installation of Windows XP by offering partitioning presets.

Boot Camp 1.1.2 lets users install Windows XP on any internal disk; adds support for built-in iSight cameras and microphones; supports Apple's USB modem, trackpad scrolling and right-clicking on a notebook; and furnishes improved keyboard support.

Apple notes that installation is relatively painless: "If you previously installed Boot Camp beta, you can easily update to Boot Camp 1.1.2 beta. You don't need to partition your hard drive again (unless you want to change its size) or reinstall your Macintosh and Windows software or documents, but it's very important to update the Boot Camp Assistant software, create a new Macintosh Drivers for Windows CD and install the updated software it contains on Windows XP."
