Amazon announces Kindle DX

As Neowin had previously reported, Amazon has unveiled its larger screened Kindle as predicted. The device boasts a 9.7 inch screen that rotates when the device is turned, a bump in storage space to 3.3GB, and a PDF reader but the real show stopper is the price at $489.00 The device will be subsidized by major newspaper outlets on contract although there is one restriction. You can only get the device subsidized if you live in a region where you can't get home delivery which means most will have to pay full retail. The Kindle DX will ship this summer and is up for pre-order now at Amazon.

PCGH: Valve about DirectX10 in the Source engine

PCGH: And what is your personal opinion about the topic? Is DX10 the way to go and therefore the way of future graphics.

Doug Lombardi: Well I mean there is always that tradeoff between taking the time to adopt the engine to a new API, right. And for us we feel like there still things in DX9 that we can achieve without having to go through the pains of moving to DX 10. That is very worthwhile and allows us the time to concentrate on other pieces. So for us as a company and our game designs, we've looked at the tradeoff of the work to move to DX 10 and we have always kind of felt that there is not really enough there for us to delay whatever game we are working on by six to eight month just to say we've a DX10 game. The other thing that is worth mentioning too is to run DX10 natively under the API you have to have both the card and vista. If you google to the Steam hardware survey where we poll peoples machines on Steam you can see that right now there is only about thirteen percent of those people that have both, the DX 10 card and Vista. So you have to look at that as well and say is it worth to investing for thirteen percent of the audience.

Academic institutions reject Kindle

There has been a great deal of talk about devices such as the famous ebook reader, the Amazon Kindle and the up and coming Apple Tablet replacing the way individuals interact with printed media. However, their success in doing so has always been up to the end user's personal preference. News reported on Beta News shows just how unpopular trials of the Amazon Kindle DX have been in academic institutions interested in trialling the technology, as a study aid for their respective students. Since the large screen Kindle DX debuted in the spring, a number of academic institutions from secondary schools upward, ran pilot programs which tested the device's viability as a textbook replacement.

Microsoft speaks DirectX 10

From the Games Developers Conference Europe

Microsoft finally saw sense and decided to drop Windows Graphic Foundation (WGF) and replace it with the more easier and logical DirectX 10 name for its nexgen API.

It gave some details to the developers officially about its upcoming API and we know that it plans to release this API together with Longhorn. Or Vista, as we must learn to call it.

The DirectX 10 API will have completely new and faster dynamic link libraries (DLLs) and is supposed to run much faster. The company decided to cut the backward compatibility with DirectX 9, 8, 7 and lower in this API but there will be a way to use games programmed for those APIs. Microsoft will enable support for DX 9 or lower games through a software layer, meaning it might run slower...

DX 10 will not take off until 2H 2007, AMD says

Despite that Nvidia recently launched its DirectX 10-compliant GPUs (graphics processing units), demand for DirectX 10 graphics cards will not pick up in the market in the first half of the year because of a lack of games to support the technology, according to Edward Chow, AMD graphics marketing director for the Asia-Pacific region.

With no boost from DirectX 10, the graphics card market will stay put in the first half of 2007, while watching Vista's acceptability, according to Chow. In the second half of 2007, DirectX 10-compliant products will see demand pick up, so the competition will hot up, with more games and blue-laser products hitting the market, he added.

Nvidia launched its DirectX 10-compliant GeForce 8800 GPU in November, while ATI's DirectX 10-supporting R600 will not hit the market until the first quarter of 2007.

Intriguing theory on DirectX 10 and its absence from Windows XP

The parties involved would never admit whether this Inquirer story is true, but it's entertaining enough that we just had to link to it. Grain of salt and all that (the article lists no sources, for example) but the theory as reported says that Microsoft started off with sound technical reasons for making DirectX 10 exclusive to Windows Vista. Due to alleged driver troubles from Nvidia, Microsoft is supposed to have loosened the requirements, and now its supposedly very possible to port DirectX 10 back to Windows XP.

Even if DX 10 on XP can be done, Microsoft won't allow it for business reasons--it wants people to buy Vista, or so the story goes

One of our missions out here at E3 this week is to talk to as many PC gaming developers as possible to find out what the near-term future of DirectX 10 looks like, especially for the purposes of benchmarking PCs and graphics cards. We don't expect to hear from anyone about DirectX 10 coming to Windows XP, but we do expect plenty of "no comments" when we ask about this story.

The perfect computer memory: quantum dots?

Flash storage is one of the main components that makes low power electronics so flexible. Unlike common DRAM, which needs constant refreshing in order to retain its contents, flash memory will stay written for about 10 years without power. However, flash pays for that longevity in access times, which are much slower than those for DRAM. The perfect memory would be nonvolatile like flash yet provide access faster than the current generation of DRAM. Quantum dots, with their nicely tunable electronic properties, look like they may fit the bill.

Researchers in Germany have been exploring the suitability of self-assembled arrays of quantum dots for nonvolatile storage. A quantum dot is a small clump of atoms that is confined in a way that restricts the motion of the electrons, making the whole thing act like a single atom. The properties of the dot can be modified by changing the size of the clump or the constituent atoms.
