Vista says NO to old DVD drives

Windows Vista will no longer support DVD-ROM drives that do not handle region coding in hardware (RPC1 drives) - thus preventing playback of DVDs that are region/CSS encoded with those drives.

Not a big problem, as RPC1 drives haven't been officially manufactured since 2000 (and Microsoft claims their drives are all broken), but for those with hacked drives (RPC2 with RPC1 firmware), or move the RPC1 drive to new computers, well, no more DVD movies for you!

DRM vs. Hackers: Time to Surrender?

Industry experts question the future of digital rights management in the face of the latest assault on AACS encryption.

The recent news that a tool from SlySoft can bypass the newest Advanced Access Content System encryption scheme is the latest assault on digital rights management—and some are taking it as proof that the technology needs to change or wither away.

"I don't think it has been easy, but nevertheless is being broken … due to software implementations, although there have been hacks done on HD DVD drive firmware as well," said Alec Main, chief technology officer of Cloakware, based in Vienna, Va. "Clearly these software implementations need to take better precautions against being hacked." ..

HD DVD User Claims to Have Bypassed AACS Encryption

In a separate matter perhaps inspired by, but otherwise unrelated to, last December's discovery of how a software-based HD DVD player may have left title keys exposed, giving users access to one of the key components necessary for them to back up their content onto separate discs, another user has posted the source code that may enable HD DVD users to determine the title keys for themselves...

HD DVD anti-rip encryption cracked

Has the HD DVD next-generation optical disc format's anti-rip technology been cracked? That's certainly what's being claimed by a programmer going by the name muslix64 who has posted a Java-based app he maintains will free the video on a disc from its encryption shackles.

HD DVD used the AACS copy-protection system to encode content. So does the Blu-ray Disc format, though it adds a couple of extra anti-piracy techniques to boost its level of protection. According to muslix64's posting on a Doom9 forum, nosing around his PC's memory, he found his test disc's title encryption key and was able to use to copy the movie to his hard drive and decrypt the video.

7 Whole-Disk Encryption Apps Put A Lock On Data

Few IT professionals need to be lectured about data security. All too frequently we hear of the theft or loss of a computer or hard drive with data stored in the clear -- without encryption.

Fortunately, on-the-fly data encryption is no longer some exotic, costly beast. Rather than just encrypting single files, some applications are able to create virtual disks, either within a file or directly on a partition, where everything written to the disk is automatically encrypted. On modern hardware, the overhead for encryption is minimal; you no longer need dedicated hardware to make this happen.

Microsoft slams the door on Vista pirates

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: With the launch of SP1 Microsoft promised to put an end to two popular hacks used by pirates to allow a non-genuine install of Windows Vista to function in the same way as a genuine install. Testing that Ive carried out in the lab today suggests that Microsoft has been true to its word.

The two most common hacks used were the OEM BIOS hack and the grace timer hack (of which there were two flavors which were widespread).

Testing both these methods of circumventing Windows activation and Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) has shown me that SP1 effectively ignores both these hacks. Systems that previously were shown to be genuine prior to the installation of SP1 then require activation - and if the system isnt activated it is marked at non-genuine and enters the nag state.

DRam crack breaks encryption software

Disk encryption software used on many systems can be circumvented using what researchers referred to as "simple non-destructive techniques".

A report from researchers at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Princeton University and Wind River Systems concluded that many current consumer disk encryption programs can be compromised via a computer's DRam. The problem is that data can remain in stored in memory even after the system is shut down. By cold-booting the system, an attacker could access data from the DRam and retrieve encryption keys.

Windows encryption programs open to kernel hack

Many popular Windows encryption programs that hide files inside mounted volumes could be fatally compromised by a new type of attack uncovered by a German researcher.

All Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD Encryption Defeated by One Key

The first breakthrough came when a hacker named "Muslix64" circumvented both HD DVD copy protection and Blu-ray copy protection, resulting in the release of pirated copies on the Internet. On Sunday, another Doom9 forum poster named "arnezami" discovered how the Processing Key could be used for decryption on both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs (Previously every HD movie needed its own unique key in order to be decrypted). Arnezami used only an Xbox 360 HD DVD player, the bundled King Kong movie and his computer to find the key. Other Doom9 forum contributors proved that both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc movies could be decrypted using the Processing Key found from King Kong.

Arnezami unlocked the secrets to HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc encryption without the use of any hacked software or hardware: " Most of the time I spend studying the AACS papers. A good understanding of how things worked have helped me greatly in knowing what to find in the first place (and how to recognize something) ." Arnezami isn't revealing which software player he used to expose the key information for fear that the Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administrator would crackdown on the software developer. What he did want to say, however, is that he made his discovery simply by watching the data as it passed through his system.

Microsoft Fighting Back Against Xbox 360 Firmware Hacks

According to reports from the Xbox-Scene forums, Microsoft has started shipping Xbox 360 consoles in the UK and Australia regions with an updated Hitachi DVD-ROM drive. The new version of the drive has implemented changes to the hardware designed to make hacking the firmware much harder than before, including changing the firmware chip type, removing debug mode, and encasing the chip with black hard glue to make it harder to access the chip and controller pins. Consoles with a manufacture date of August 2006 in the two affected territories have been shown to have the updated drive, but it is certainly possible that consoles manufactured on earlier dates have the changes as well. Microsoft has made its first counter-move against the hackers looking to open up the Xbox 360, and this will probably only be the first salvo in an ongoing battle.
