Microsoft releases Windows DreamScene

In early July, I wrote about The Ultimate Team's intention to ship the remaining promised Ultimate Extras (DreamScene and the remaining Language Packs) by the end of the summer. Unfortunately summer never really came to Seattle this year-so we missed our cue. That being said, we are pleased to announce that Windows DreamScene is now available.

As most of you already know, Windows DreamScene transforms your desktop from a static wallpaper image into a full-motion video. In conjunction with Stardock, we're pleased to also offer a number of cool, new animated DreamScene desktops, including "Aurora". Additionally, you can use your own videos as DreamScene desktops or visit Stardock's Dream.WinCustomize.com website to download Stardock's DeskScapes (an add-on to DreamScene) as well as a collection of fabulous content created by Stardock and members of the Ultimate community.

Dreamscene Preview Ultimate Extra available

Microsoft have just released the 'Dreamscene Preview' Ultimate Extra to users of the Ultimate Edition of Windows Vista. Dreamscene, which was revealed at CES 2007, was missing from the lineup of extras at the launch of Vista, as it needed further work. This preview release allows Ultimate Edition users to see what the final technology will be like once the final version is released to the public.

Your desktop background comes to life with Windows DreamScene™. When you download this Ultimate Extra, you can select a video for your desktop background the same way you select a stationary picture. You can choose one of the high-quality looping videos that we've included, or use a video from a company that produces content for DreamScene. You can even use your own video as a background.

To download Dreamscene, click the Windows Update or Ultimate Extras shortcut on your start menu, and click the 'Check for new updates' link.

Dreamscene cracked, now runs on regular Vista

Microsoft has been hard at work trying to bundle a set of special goodies to reward people who shelled out the cash for Vista Ultimate, such as Dreamscene, a bundle of animated wallpapers that uses Vista's advanced compositing display engine.

Well, the hackers have been hard at work dissecting how Dreamscene works and have come up with a method to run the program under any version of Windows Vista, whether it be a Business edition or just Home Basic.

Windows DreamScene coming soon on Ultimate

Windows Vista Ultimate users began to receive the first set of "Ultimate Extras". But arguably the most anticipated Ultimate Extra was not there -- Windows DreamScene.

Windows client director, Jeff Putt has confirmed that this extra will not be available in its final form immediately after launch. However, a technology preview may be coming soon for Windows Vista Ultimate users who want to give it a try.

Windows DreamScene enables users to use looping high-definition video content (MPEG, WMV) as an animated wallpaper. Thanks to the new 3D accelerated desktop in Windows Vista, the animated wallpaper uses virtually no CPU (just a little for decoding the video).

Microsoft demonstrated Windows DreamScene yesterday at the launch event which showed Windows DreamScene using an animated wallpaper created by Stardock . The wallpaper they showed will be available exclusively at Neowin.net's partner site, WinCustomize .com, in February.

More information on public availability for Windows Vista Ultimate users is expected soon.

Microsoft unveils Windows DreamScene

Tonight at CES Microsoft introduced users to Windows DreamScene (code-name Motion Desktop). DreamScene is a Windows Vista Ultimate Extra designed to enable users to use high-definition video content as their desktop background.

During the demonstration, Microsoft showed how little CPU DreamScene uses thanks to its utiliziation of the Desktop Windows Manager (DWM).

Microsoft tapped WinCustomize.com (a Neowin.net partner) to host third-party created content on a new site called Dream.WinCustomize.com. Microsoft also worked closely with Stardock during the development of DreamScene and to produce the 3D rendered content including Aurora.

DreamScene RTM dated July 19, Microsoft: what took so long?

After Dreamscene was finally released, the anger built up over the months was somewhat subdued amongst Windows Vista Ultimate users. And yet, everyone was quite curious on what took so long, as there didn't seem to be much of a difference between the beta preview released on February 28 (build 16455) and the final (build 16504) released yesterday. Well, unfortunately, what was discovered only raises mor questions. Dreamscene's core component, Dreamscene.dll, had some interesting information other than just build numbers embedded within. According to the PE header and build string of the library, the final Dreamscene build was compiled on July 19, 2007. Not only does that mean that there were a mere 49 builds in a grand total of 141 days, but one must ask, what exactly was Microsoft doing, other than testing of course, in the 68 days between build and release?

Stardock to announce DeskScapes 2.0 “ Vista Ultimate Extras going the Way of the Dodo

Long Zheng: Windows Ultimate Extras is losing value faster than the US dollar as one of the few śextrasť is soon to be superseded by a free third-party application that works not only on Vista Ultimate, but Home Premium and Business versions as well. That extra would be DreamScene, that third party would be Stardock and that application would be DeskScapes 2.0. Those grumpy looking people in the corner would be Ultimate Extra advocates.

Tomorrow, Stardock will announce DeskScapes 2.0 “ the second version of its desktop background visualiser tool for Windows Vista. Formerly DeskScapes was an extension to the DreamScene extra, allowing for dynamic generated śDreamsť on top of just the motion videos allowed by DreamScene itself. Now, both formats will be supported by DeskScapes 2.0 without the requirements for DreamScene or Vista Ultimate.

Ultimate Extras, Two Weeks and Counting

We are in the final two weeks of summer and still no word on what or if anything is happening with Ultimate Extras. The Ultimate Extra blog still hasn't been updated since July 2nd when it said it intended to deliver DreamScene and the Language Packs by the end of summer.I don't know about you, but I am beginning to think they won't make it.

winbeta.org - 08.09.2007

Windows DreamScene released!

Barry Goffe: In early July, I wrote about The Ultimate Teams intention to ship the remaining promised Ultimate Extras (DreamScene and the remaining Language Packs) by the end of the summer. Unfortunately summer never really came to Seattle this yearso we missed our cue. That being said, we are pleased to announce that Windows DreamScene is now available.

As most of you already know, Windows DreamScene transforms your desktop from a static wallpaper image into a full-motion video. In conjunction with Stardock, were pleased to also offer a number of cool, new animated DreamScene desktops, including śAurorať. Additionally, you can use your own videos as DreamScene desktops or visit Stardocks Dream.WinCustomize.com website to download Stardocks DeskScapes (an add-on to DreamScene) as well as a collection of fabulous content created by Stardock and members of the Ultimate community.

While we are excited about shipping DreamScene, the remaining 19 language packs are, unfortunately, not yet ready for release. Recently we realized that Ultimate customers who tried to install the language packs that shipped earlier this year were experiencing an unacceptably high number of failures during installation. We continue to make delivering the highest quality, most secure Extras our top priority, and we will not ship any Extra until it is absolutely ready. We know this is disappointing, and again we apologize, but we are working hard to ensure that all of the remaining language packs will be ready for release by the end of October.

On a different topic, as the broad beta for Windows Vista SP1 nears, people have noticed that the screen which welcomes customers to Windows Ultimate Extras has changed. Our intent in making this change was simply to broaden the definition in anticipation of a broader range of Ultimate Extras being available in the futurethat do not necessarily map to the original, narrow definition.

While I can understand how community sites and bloggers may have read the new definition and assumed that Microsoft is not shipping any more Extras, in reality the opposite is true. In addition to the remaining Language Packs, we plan to ship a collection of additional Windows Ultimate Extras that we are confident will delight our passionate Windows Vista Ultimate customers. We will shed more light on these plans once the Language Packs are finally dislodged from our delivery pipeline!

Thanks for your patience and your continued support.

I look forward to sharing more positive news in the near future.

Windows Vista Ultimate Extras, Less than 3 days and counting

Microsoft has 2 & 1/2 days left until Summer ends and the first day of fall officially starts. and still no word on what or if anything is happening with Ultimate Extras. The Ultimate Extra blog still hasn't been updated since July 2nd when it said it intended to deliver DreamScene and the Language Packs by the end of summer.
"We intend to ship Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs by the end of the summer. We will not ship the last two Extras showcased in January (Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs) until they meet the high quality bar required by our enthusiastic customers-and we believe that we can achieve that bar by the end of this summer".
I don't know about you, but I am beginning to think they won't make it. It's a real shame that a huge corporation fails to keep its Software users up-to-date on whats going on with the development of the extras.

Animated wallpapers no longer just for the Vista elite

Animated wallpapers have been one of the “Extras” that Microsoft has touted as a selling point for customers of its priciest Windows Vista SKU. But now Stardock is bringing animated wallpapers to the Vista masses.

Stardock, a Gold Certified Microsoft partner, worked with Microsoft on DreamScene — a desktop-display feature that allows users to make looped, full-motion video their desktop wallpaper (as opposed to using static images only for background wallpaper). After a number of delays, Microsoft finally released DreamScene in September 2007.

Stardock helped to create much of the initial wallpaper content for DreamScene and then went on to release DeskScapes 1.0 for Vista Ultimate users interested in enhancing DreamScene. With DeskScapes 2.0, Stardock has decided to make animated wallpapers avaialble to users of Vista Business, Home Premium and Ultimate users. The Standard edition of the product will be available as a free download; an enhanced version with additional features and “premium” content also will be availbale for $19.95.

Let There Be Extras!

After months and months without seeing any updates to the so called "cutting-edge programs", "innovative services" and "unique publications" that we like to call Ultimate Extras, users finally received a shred of hope for the long forgotten feature after the final version of Windows DreamScene appeared on Windows Update for those running Windows Vista Ultimate edition.

In the past months, Ultimate Extras have undergone mass criticism from users and the media due to the slow development and lack of releases. Ultimate Extras are considered the selling point for many, and are what encouraged many to dish out the extra $200 for the all-in-one, Ultimate, version. However, Extras turned out to be nothing but a series of disappointments. A mere four extras had been released since Vista's release, and users have been all but impressed, some have gone as far as to say they were conned.

Today, the gears are finally in motion after the Ultimate Extras team announced the release of the final version of Windows DreamScene. The final release now includes a total of eight "DreamScenes", three of which are new to today's release.
