1.10.2008Windows 7: Measuring the "superbar"
One of the new things that anyone would notice immediately in Windows 7 is the new Taskbar. Microsoft internally calls it 'Superbar'. The
Windows Taskbar has come a long way since Windows 95 was released. With the help of the Taskbar, it becomes easier to see what are the programs
currently running, switching between applications and also to access your favorites using the Quick Launch. Image Courtesy: Windows 7 Blog For
many, Windows 7's Superbar looks bigger than the Windows Vista's Taskbar. Long Zheng has taken steps to prove that, after all the Superbar is
not that big. Long has found that the Windows Start button is actually shrunk by about 8 pixels.

05.01.2009Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 2
In the first part of this series, we had a brief look into the history of the dock and Windows 7 superbar. Today, we will go through some of the basic
functionalities that both dock and superbar provide and have in common. The dock can hold any number of items and resize them dynamically to fit
while using magnification to clarify smaller resized items. Applications that do not normally keep icons in the dock will still appear when running
and remain until they are quit. Running items are distinguished by an indicator at the bottom of their respective icons. When you quit an
application whose icon resides in the dock, the indicator disappears.

05.03.2009Windows 7 Build 6801 has the Superbar, too
Microsoft deceived every PDC2008 attendee by saying that the build they handed out, build 6801, didn't have the new "superbar" taskbar replacement
that was being shown off throughout the conference.
Well, it turns out that it really is in the build, you just have to
be properly authenticated in Redmond. Rafael (
withinwindows.com) has decrypted this
mystery and has provided a patch (with instructions) that will enable the superbar on any 6801 install.

03.11.2008Oh yes, the Superbar is available in Windows 7 Build 6801
Wishing that the new "Superbar" was available for the PDC build of Windows 7? What about for your trusty copy of Vista? Well it isn't
available for Vista yet (I am sure someone will whip up someway of porting it over) but it is available to all users who have a copy of Windows 7
Build 6801.
Rafael, the well known Ux theme patcher, from
withinwindows.com, has uncovered how to bring this breakthrough feature available to anyone who is lucky enough to have Windows
7 build 6801. It does take some changing to the OS to enable this hidden feature but it is well worth it.
Windows 7's "Superbar" was
demonstrated heavily at Microsoft's PDC. For more information and full demonstrations checkout our
PDC section.

03.11.2008Rafael's at it Again
As a lot of people are aware, Rafael from Within Windows has been finding and exposing un-released Windows 7 features, most notably the "Superbar"
and Desktop Slideshows.
He has now created a full unlocking tool called "Blue Badge" that will unlock the following features:
- The Superbar
- Gestures and Panning (for use on touch screens)
- Desktop Slideshows
Please note two things:
1. This application does NOT back up any of the files it patches, so to be safe, you will need to back up these files:
WindowsExplorer.exe
WindowsSystem32wisptis.exe
WindowsSystem32ieframe.dll
WindowsSystem32shell32.dll
WindowsSystem32stobject.dll
WindowsSystem32TabletPC.cpl
WindowsSystem32themecpl.dll
WindowsSystem32themeui.dll
WindowsSystem32powercfg.cpl
-----------
2. This application IS compatible
with systems currently running the superbar who want to extend their desktop to allow the three other features.

10.11.2008Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 1
Mac Dock and Windows Taskbar Overview The Dock in OS X Leopard is a bar of icons that sits at the bottom or side of the screen, and employs a 3D
perspective. The Dock is a prominent feature of OS X. It is also a prominent feature of Mac OS X's predecessors NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP operating
systems. It is primarily a way to launch and switch between running applications. It not only provides easy access to applications, but allows the
user to organize them to their taste within the Dock. Any file or app can be attached to the Dock.

15.01.2009Tidbits about the new "superbar" taskbar
Long Zheng: Ever since the Windows 7 demo with Steven Sinofsky and Julie-Larson Green at PDC 2008 where they showed off the new śsuperbarť taskbar,
theres been a lot of questions about how the new taskbar will work, customized or tweaked.
Unfortunately because the pre-beta
build did not contain the new taskbar, its been hard to answer those questions. Fortunately I met up with Chaitanya Sareen today who took me through a
better tour of the new taskbar on one of the demo machines with the new build. Heres a few facts about the new taskbar.

07.08.2009Windows 7 Beta: Here's where we stand
Brandon LeBlanc: Due to an enormous surge in demand, the download experience was not ideal so we listened and took the necessary steps to ensure a
good experience. We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided remove the initial 2.5
million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks (thru January 24th). During that time you will have access to the beta even if the download
number exceeds the 2.5 million unit limit.

11.01.2009When will you get Windows 7 RTM?
When will I get Windows 7 RTM?
Brandon LeBlanc: I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you
have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM.
Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close
out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people “ or śaudiencesť “ would get the final RTM code.
While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to
get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.

25.04.2009The New Taskbar in Windows 7
As we have noticed with the Windows 7 presentation at D6, Microsoft is putting in some efforts to make an update to the aging design of the taskbar,
contrary to the belief that they are going to make something completely new. The supposedly new name of the taskbar is the "Superbar." Long Zheng
has pointed out some of the new things:
"The first being the taskbar is higher than usual, but not as big as double-height. If I were to
guess, I'd say its somewhere around 1.75x-high. In the left corner, the Windows orb remains wedged "on top" of the taskbar - sticking its head out
a little - instead of in the center like it is today in Vista.
The taskbar also appears 'divided' into sections by variations in the
color (dark, gray, lighter) to indicate the different areas. Speaking of which, if you look at the far right corner, you'd notice that the tray
(icons & clock) is not touching the edge of the screen, and there's a small lighter gap. I have no explanation for this, but is well worth keeping an
eye on."

01.06.2008OEMs Pick Up Windows 7 RTM Code Today in Redmond
Brandon LeBlanc: When we
announced Windows 7 had
RTMd on Wednesday, I posted that OEMs would receive the RTM code within a few days. Well, its been a few days! Earlier today, a handful of OEMs
arrived in Redmond to pick up their RTM code. In the past when a Windows release reaches RTM, we have traditionally given some/selected OEMs the
opportunity to come to Redmond and pick up the RTM code personally. I thought it would be neat to showcase these OEMs that came to campus today as the
RTM code is handed off to them to begin preparing for General Availability (GA) on October 22, 2009!
