23.05.2006Windows 7 beta download imminent?
Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It would appear from the posting that Microsoft is currently
readying site updates and download servers for the imminent release of the Windows 7 beta. Yesterday, German site Winfuture claimed that the beta
would be released today and this could confirm the sites claims. The download link is currently inaccessible. It's entirely possible that once
the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official
confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.

26.03.2009AOL launches Desktop for Windows
AOL Desktop (download it for
Windows XP/Vista from CNET Download.com) is a
new, free download that collects most of that brand's services, such as Mail and AIM, into one location.
This is an interesting,
old-school approach to organizing Web-based content on the desktop, unlike so much new webware that leans on the browser as the portal for
anywhere-access to services. Another recently-released download that depends upon the Internet for most functionality is Microsoft's
Windows Live apps bundle.
However, while that package adds useful and novel tools, the AOL portal left me puzzled.
The AOL Desktop download for Windows XP
and Vista took a couple of minutes, and installation another five minutes with either Express and Custom choices. I prefer the latter because by
default, Express alters your default browser to include the AOL Toolbar, and it sets AOL as the search engine and home page. Thoughtfully, AOL asks
your Internet connection type to tailor the experience to those with slow or fast access. (On a related note, there's also a beta version of AOL
Desktop for Mac, a different product, which I haven't tested.)

Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3.

03.01.2009Windows 7 Beta Testing Will Be A Windows Vista Logo Requirement
Even before Microsoft has published the first beta of Windows 7 it is
working to ensure it will not repeat the
same failings of Windows Vista. In a March 21 2008 update to the
Microsoft Hardware Logo Program
Requirements Microsoft added a new provision for Logo Certification which will require every one requesting Windows Vista logo certification to
submit a test logs from Windows 7 as well, once a beta is available.
This new policy, which will become effective June 1, 2008,
says there is no requirement that you pass the Windows 7 test to get your Windows Vista Logo Certification, just that you submit it and resolve any
issue found before launch of the next OS (Windows 7).

24.05.2006Microsoft opens beta of Live Mobile portal
Microsoft has opened a beta of Windows Live Mobile Homepage, the Windows Live portal designed for use on mobile handsets.
BetaNews tested the Live Mobile portal on a decidedly out-of-date Windows Mobile 5.0 device on the notably slow T-Mobile Web, yet it still gave a
nimble performance.
From
mhome.live.com, the user is prompted to sign
into his Windows Live account, and given the option to access Windows Live Mail (Hotmail), Messenger, or MSN Mobile. Navigation is assigned to twelve
numerical hotkeys (0-9, #, *), and although sites contain images, most text is digested into a single font style and size.
