Two Server Releases, One Day

It's a busy day on Microsoft Connect today, as two new, and anxiously awaited downloads appear.

It seems that both Beta 2 of Windows Home Server as well as the February CTP of Windows Server codenamed "Longhorn" have been released.

For those who applied for the Windows Home Server techbeta program, check your inbox, as invitation emails have just gone out.

There are several downloads available for Windows Home Server, the main installation iso, connector iso and restore iso are all available for separate downloads. All three combined total to an approximate 1.8GB. It is still unknown whether or not the release is x86 or x64 as it has not been disclosed on Connect. (Although, judging by the file size, it appears to be x86)

The February CTP of Longhorn Server weighs in at about 2.5GB for x64 and 1.8GB for x86

Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore

Windows® Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the amount of space that is used on your home server.

Windows Home Server SDK Available

Today we are announcing the availability of the Windows Home Server SDK. (download below)

As I stated in my Channel 9 video interview in January, enabling developers to build on Windows Home Server is an important goal for us. We include all sorts of developers in our definition, including pros doing it to make a living, hobbyists doing it for others just for the gratification, and makers who just do it for themselves.

Our little set of APIs let you integrate your Add-in into the Home Server Console and interact with some of the elements behind the solutions we provide. But all the interesting work that great Windows Home Server Add-ins will do will be done using the standard "Windows API".

More info on Windows Home Server

Gizmodo has an interesting post that mentions a couple points often overlooked about Windows Home Server.

Windows Home Server only backs up one instance of a file that appears across your system. So think of it this way, if you are using WHS to backup your 5 Dell XPS laptops (lucky you), each freshly formatted with Vista and holding all of your MP3s, the amount of storage required to back them up isn't going to be much bigger than the amount of space required to backup one of them. Read more about the disk system here (pdf).

Another cool feature with Home Server is sharing the printers across your home network. Seems like I could run a small Kinko's out of my house and I was always at the wrong computer to print what I needed; text at the photo printer, pictures at the laser printer. Now all my printers are shared across the network - even available to visitors.

Windows Home Server System Builder Software Price Decrease

After a successful year in the market, Microsoft is reducing the price of the System Builder version of Windows Home Server to provide additional value to the system builder community and further promote the home server category. Momentum for Windows Home Server remains strong. During the first year, Windows Home Server has been embraced by System Builders in over 50 countries. The list of hardware partners continues to grow and third-party software developers have released or have announced more than 60 Add-in programs extending Windows Home Servers capabilities. Thanks for all of the great support over the last year, and we look forward to working with you all in continuing to grow the home server marketplace!
