Windows Vista RC1 Download Page Discovered

Only hours after Microsoft released Windows Vista build 5536 to the public, their RC1 download page has been discovered. The RC1 build, which was, according to Paul Thurrott, finalized yesterday, is most likely not there yet, and since the download ISO is approximately 3.12 GB, it appears to be the Beta 2 version.

The page is about the same as the pre-RC1 download page but removes the references to the 100000 copies limit, and, of course, replaces the pre-RC1 terms for RC1.

Microsoft is expected to make Windows Vista's first Release Candidate available broadly in early september, and is already preparing it, just after releasing its preview build.

Thanks to Nem for the heads up!

Palm's Pre to support tethering, other details revealed

Sprint has updated their web page on Palm's Pre, revealing some interesting details. The details on the Pre have been on Palm's website for some time, but as they are now on Sprint's site, this could mean an imminent release. The first of the interesting details is that the Pre will support data tethering, either via BlueTooth or USB. This means that you can connect the Pre to a laptop or PC, and use it as a wireless internet access point, providing internet access from anywhere that the Pre has coverage. Secondly, the 8gb of internal storage on the Pre will have 7.4gb available, meaning that the operating system on the device takes up a considerable amount of space.

Windows 7 pre-beta build is 6801

Microsoft announced the availability of a critical security patch yesterday affecting a variety of Windows operating systems.

Interestingly, the Windows 7 pre-beta build, which will be available to developers next Tuesday, also contains the bug. Microsoft stated "Customers running Windows 7 Pre-Beta are encouraged to download and apply the update to their systems. On Windows 7 Pre-Beta systems, the vulnerable code path is only accessible to authenticated users. This vulnerability is not liable to be triggered if the attacker is not authenticated, and therefore would be rated Important."

In a support article Microsoft details some Windows 7 Pre-Beta file information notes. The build string on the notes is 6.1.6801.4106, the same build string that has been screenshotted recently.

It is believed that the 6801 build is a milestone 3 (M3) build released to select customers and partners over the last few months.

Microsoft will be releasing the build to attendees at their professional developers conference next Tuesday.

Windows 7 "Pre-Beta" Build 7004

Doug Holland: Scott Wylie, Microsoft's New Zealand Director of Development and Platform Strategy, wrote today on his blog about his experience installing a pre-beta build of Windows 7 on his home laptop.

It is interesting to note that the pre-beta build of Windows 7 installed on his home laptop seems to be build 7004, which if the term "pre-beta" is accurate would indicate that Windows 7 beta one will be some build number higher than 7004. On the blogosphere the general consensus has been that beta one would be build 7000.0.081212-1400 which the following screen shot from Scott's laptop could indicate is inaccurate.
