This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

09.03.2009Steven Sinofsky on Windows 7 and netbooks
Ars Technica: We got a chance to ask Steven Sinofsky some netbook questions that have been burning at our souls since we first had a look at Windows
7. For those that don't know, Sinofsky was the longtime Office head before moving over to the Windows group last year.
As a more
recent development, Netbooks as a class of hardware didn't really exist during the Windows Vista development cycle. When netbooks do ship with
Windows, the resource constraints generally force vendors into the old, wrinkly arms of XP. Sinofsky demonstrated Windows 7 on a netbook during the
PDC day-2 keynote, and we were curious to find out more about it. Here's what Sinofsky had to say about the future of Windows on netbooks.

testing is going on in the Mini netbook line and it runs very well on the Minis, even with Aero turned on. Besides the three editions of Windows 7
that HP plans to support, Thornton also hopes to continue to pre-install both Windows XP Professional and Vista Business on its business-oriented

10.02.2009Microsoft touts Windows 7 for Netbooks
During a recent question and answer session with Brad Brooks, corporate vice president of Windows Consumer Product Marketing, he gave his take on
Windows 7 on netbooks, or mini-notebook PC's. Brooks confirms that Windows 7 will support netbook PC's, and not only support them, but
improve the consumers experience over any other Operating System. After recent showings at PDC, WinHEC, and CES, Brooks said users using Windows 7 on
netbook PC's had an overall great experience on the miniature devices, from Windows 7 small footprint, and improved user interface. Windows 7
will help improve boot up and shut down times on the netbooks, with a fully-functioning Windows experience.

09.01.2009Does Windows 7 reduce netbook battery life?
The vast majority of netbooks on the market today ship with Windows XP. And the nearly decade-old operating system runs pretty well on a machine with
a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU and all the usual netbook specs like 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. You know what else runs surprisingly well on
these netbooks? Windows 7, the upcoming next-gen operating system from Microsoft. Theres just one catch: It looks like most netbooks may be optimized
for Windows XP, and without the proper drivers some netbooks get dramatically worse battery life when running Windows 7.

25.08.2009SanDisk to launch new SSD range for netbooks
SanDisk have announced that they are launching a new range of Solid State Drives (SSDs) designed specifically for netbooks. The SanDisk pSSD-P2 and
SanDisk pSSD-S2 SSDs, expected in February this year, will be available in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64GB – which, with the latter two, would
allow for a full installation of Windows Vista (or any large operating system for that matter), something not possible on netbooks with smaller
capacity SSDs. The new range is said to have improved performance for netbooks, at a lower cost. Unlike the previous range of netbook SSDs, the new
range is to feature a SATA interface, following a change in design requirements.

06.01.2009Windows 7 and netbooks - Where are we now
There has been lot going on with Windows 7 and that it can run on 'netbooks' - lightweight, low-cost laptops that typically use Intel's
low-powered Atom processor and don't come with substantial amounts of RAM or powerful graphics processors. It all started when Steven Sinofksy,
Windows Senior Vice President, showed off Windows 7 at the PDC, on his Lenovo S10 and said it used less than half of the netbook's 1GB of RAM.
That was followed by Jerry Shen, CEO of Asus, announcing the plans to release versions of the Eee PC powered by Windows 7 in mid-2009, including a
touch-screen version.

08.04.2009Microsoft Offers Windows 7 on USB Drives for Netbooks
Microsoft is allowing netbook users to download Windows 7, its new operating system, onto a bootable USB or burn it onto a DVD, in yet another move by
Redmond to disseminate the operating system to as many users as possible. Although Microsoft reported yet another quarter of declining revenues,
executives remain hopeful that Windows 7, rising PC sales and a sunnier economic outlook will translate into a more profitable 2010.

25.10.2009Microsoft may offer Windows 7 on thumb drive for netbooks
Microsoft has shown Windows 7 running on netbooks even since it first introduced the operating system, however, helping consumers getting it on there
may prove a bit tricky. According to CNET, Microsoft is considering offering Windows 7 on a thumb drive so that netbook owners are able to easily
upgrade their machines in case they lack a DVD drive, and are unable to use an external one. Even though Microsoft is considering selling Windows 7
on a thumb drive, there are other options for netbook users to upgrade. Less tech-savvy consumers could pay for someone else to do it, such as a
service like Best Buy's Geek Squad.

12.08.2009Microsoft to introduce new 'netbook-like' Windows Server SKU
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer listed the areas where Microsoft plans to invest in the annual Strategic Update presentation for Wall Street analysts.
During the event Ballmer said the company will introduce a new, low-priced Windows Server version in the next couple of months but acknowledged that
Microsoft has to decide on how it will handle Windows 7 SKU pricing for netbooks. Ballmer said about 90% of netbooks generally priced at $200 to
$400 have been shipped with a stripped-down version of Windows XP and buyers of netbooks with the low-end version of Windows 7 will have the
option of upgrading to the more powerful versions.

25.02.2009Intel goes after Windows 7 on netbooks with Linux
In an effort to counter the growing dominance of Microsoft's Windows OS in netbooks, Intel on Tuesday announced a beta version of a Linux OS it has
developed for low-cost laptops and mobile devices.
The chip company on Tuesday
announced a beta of Moblin
2.0, a stripped-down distribution of Linux optimized for smaller screens on netbooks and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). Intel has fine-tuned Moblin
for netbooks based on Atom chips with a simple user interface and improved power-saving features.

20.05.2009MS wants to rename netbooks "low cost small notebook PC"
Microsoft has gone on record to say that the term "netbook" use should be restricted and the term "low cost small notebook PC" should be used in
its place. The reasoning for the abandonment is because Microsoft sees that netbooks are only good for surfing the web and that there is little
distinction between small cheap laptops and netbooks. The real reason for Microsoft wanting to rename the netbook type laptops is driven by its own
definition of a "netbook". Microsoft will only license Windows 7 Starter to netbook products.

04.03.2009Acer to make first-ever Android netbooks
Acer at Computex today
said it would be the first to
produce netbooks using Google's Android platform. Company IT product president Jim Wong expects the systems to appear in the summer and that the
Linux-based systems will still use Intel Atom processors. He didn't provide prices, though the Android netbooks should be less expensive than Windows
versions as Google doesn't charge for licenses where Microsoft asks for $15 for each copy of Windows XP.

02.06.2009Following Success of Windows on Netbooks, Microsoft Extends Windows Offering to Nettop Devices
Today at Computex, Microsoft Corp. announced that following the success of Windows on netbooks, the Windows offering is being extended to include
nettop devices. Netbooks are commonly referred to as ultralow-cost PCs (ULCPCs) and were originally intended for students and other first-time PC
customers in emerging markets. Nettop refers to desktops that are ultralow-cost.
In April, Microsoft announced the worldwide
extension of the availability of Windows for this emerging class of devices that are primarily used for e-mail, accessing the Internet and instant
messaging, and the company is seeing much demand among industry partners who want to ensure that customers can have the benefits of Windows on both
new and existing devices.

03.06.2008Netbooks: Just a Fad?
Were they just a fad? That may very well be the case according to Intel.
Stu Pann, vice president in the sales and marketing group at
Intel had this to say.
"We originally thought Netbooks would be for emerging markets and younger kids, and there is some of that. It
turns out the bulk of the Netbooks sold today are Western Europe, North America, and for people who just want to grab and go with a notebook.
We view the Netbook as mostly incremental to our total available market. If you've ever used a Netbook and used a 10-inch screen size--it's
fine for an hour. It's not something you're going to use day in and day out."
So it seems that the original dream of having Netbooks
to take with you on-the-go is a bust. Any heavy computer user will know that to get anything done over a long period of time, you certainly can't be
using a 10" screen. So even if they increase the performance to unbelievable levels, they still won't exceed regular laptop sales, simply because of
the way-too-small form factor.
AMD believes that Netbooks will be in and out just as fast as UMPCs were before them.
Great
concepts aren't always s successful as they were planned to be. This seems to be the case with netbooks.
