Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?

Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:

A method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

Spyware installer hides in Messenger ad banner

The banner itself appears to advertise and link to a download called Free PC-Secure (which is unfamiliar to us) but the real problem is that its appearance automatically launches a Windows dialog box telling you that "Your system is not clean" and asking you if "you want to download System Doctor to improve it." You know, the typical hoax message that tries to download a malicious ActiveX control even though you click "Cancel" in a fruitless attempt to ignore it.

The conclusion here is that a nasty spyware ad seems to have infiltrated into Microsoft's banner advertising network because one of their clients is making use of some html code trickery.

We advise everyone to pay strict attention when they receive such a message window out of the blue. Cancel any initiated downloads and close the pop-ups/browser instances it launches. The animated banner in the screenshot below (showing two random frames) is the cause of the unsolicited Windows prompt. The bottom image shows the deceitful message on the page that is automatically opened no matter your choice in the dialog window.

Windows Vista Build 5728 Availability Window Closing Soon

Nick White has posted this on the Vista team blog yesterday, thought I'd give everyone who is interested in testing the latest build of Vista a heads up on the limited availability.

Per my post from last week, I've got some news for you regarding the release of interim build 5728:

2. The window is rapidly closing for download of the English build, as we're nearing our targeted download quantity.

If you've not yet downloaded the build, I would suggest doing so today.

Thank you to all of our beta testers who've downloaded this build to date -- we didn't expect your response to be so rapid and enthusiastic!

FileBox eXtender - Now Freeware

After a great deal of development work we have sadly concluded that it is not practical to adapt FileBox eXtender to work under Window Vista - the architecture is simply too different.

With FileBox eXtender you can create a menu of files, folders or drives that you can access from a tray icon or from whatever window is open. It will add more buttons to the top of your windows that you can use to roll-up the window, make it stay on top of other windows or quickly choose save location. You can create sub menus in the list if you want to. This provides one click access to any application or folder you want to open. FileBox eXtender has more features which you can read about at the site.

PINNED: WLM Build 566 Comming Soon

Remember that little talk about how the 562 build of Windows Live Messenger was just a preview; well here comes the bride... I mean the build. Build 566 of WLM is to be released on February 28th according to the WLM team blog.

The build will feature some noticeable updates, mainly the layout of the Contact List, the tabs have now been repositioned inside the main window, the spacing between each contact has been reduced to allow more contacts to be viewable in the window (= less scrolling) and the avatar preview and display name/personal messages boxes are finally back to the left side again.

A few of the minor updates include the fact that the menus are now only available through the drop down menu, meaning you can no longer expand or minimize the window frame like before. Also, the ink/type tabs in the conversation window have been moved to the right side closer to your display picture.

It has also been announced that the WLM team is working on new status icons that both look good and show the status at the same time.

New MySpace, Skype virus threats spotted

The two virus threats are completely unrelated except that they were both discovered by Finnish computer security firm F-Secure Corporation.

The popular social networking site MySpace.com is having its user pages infected with a link to a computer virus. The pages are being modified by versions of the Zlob Trojan, which is installing code that overlays its own window on top of the page, according to F-Secure's chief researcher Mikko Hypponen. Zlob tries to download and run malware and attempts to change Internet Explorer web browser settings, default search and home pages. When a MySpace user clicks on the overlaid window, the virus tries to modify that page with code that includes the Zlob download link.

Hypponen also warned of initial reports regarding attempts to spread another known virus through Skype's text-based instant messaging feature. Some have alerted F-Secure that they had received links to files infected with a worm called Warezov. Warezov harvests e-mail addresses it finds on infected computers and sends itself as an attachment to those recipients. It also tries to download newer versions of itself from the internet. According to Hypponen, " some older Warezov variants have used other instant messaging in a similar fashion, but not Skype ."

Free Security Tool Ferrets out Unpatched Software

A Danish security vendor is offering a free tool designed to inform users when their applications need patching.

Secunia ApS released the beta version of Personal Software Inspector for download, a client program that periodically checks to see if new updates have been issued for some 4,200 applications.

After installation, the tool inventories a computer's software and versions. It classifies programs as "insecure," "end-of-life" or "up-to-date." The tool then runs when the computer is started.

When a patch is issued for a program on a user's computer, the tool displays a pop-up window in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, said Thomas Kristensen, Secunia's chief technology officer. Another panel provides a download link for the patch...

War breaks out between AdBlock Plus and NoScript

A quiet war has broken out between the authors of AdBlock Plus and NoScript and money is on the table. Both are trying to outdo each other by disabling each other's functionality. The issue at stake is NoScript's behavior of showing a changelog window whenever it gets a new update, which of late has been updated rather frequently. And unsurprisingly, that changelog window is filled with ads that generate revenue for NoScript. AdBlock Plus on the other hand is commited to blocking ads regardless of where they are from; and this has treaded on the tail of the author of NoScript.
