10.02.2009Windows 7 beta download imminent?
Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It would appear from the posting that Microsoft is currently
readying site updates and download servers for the imminent release of the Windows 7 beta. Yesterday, German site Winfuture claimed that the beta
would be released today and this could confirm the sites claims. The download link is currently inaccessible. It's entirely possible that once
the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official
confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.

CPP (Customer Preview Program)

to participants for the
Managed Beta Program, is now

for a reminder the build is
just over 2.5GB and is only
available in 32-bit. It has
been confirmed that a 64-bit
build will not be released.
The build can be
downloaded either through your
browser or using the Akamai
Download Manager provided by

demand for Windows Vista Beta
2 has been overwhelming. It
is, in fact, the largest
downloaded software in
history. Currently, they are
serving product keys out ten
times faster then the
downloads can be served. In
fact, they are pumping out
bits as fast as they can - any
faster and there would be a
measurable impact on the
internet. In fact, I quote a
Microsoft representive:
"So, we are
literally saying that if we
increased our bandwidth any
further there's a possibilty
of taking down the Internet -
people might have problems
with World Cup viewing,
etc"
People
who have recieved Vista Beta 2
product keys, but are unable
to download, may need to wait
a few days, up to one week.
Microsoft encoruages users who
want to try out Windows Vista
Beta 2 to order the DVD. When
they recieve the DVD in 1-4
weeks, install it, and
activate it, they will be
automattically guaranteed an
RC1 upgrade.

Even before Microsoft has published the first beta of Windows 7 it is
working to ensure it will not repeat the
same failings of Windows Vista. In a March 21 2008 update to the
Microsoft Hardware Logo Program
Requirements Microsoft added a new provision for Logo Certification which will require every one requesting Windows Vista logo certification to
submit a test logs from Windows 7 as well, once a beta is available.
This new policy, which will become effective June 1, 2008,
says there is no requirement that you pass the Windows 7 test to get your Windows Vista Logo Certification, just that you submit it and resolve any
issue found before launch of the next OS (Windows 7).
