jcxp.net - 27.07.2009'Awesome Bar': Firefox's next killer feature?
For those interested, Firefox 3 RC1 is available here.
Todd Bishop: Representatives of Mozilla were in Seattle today to talk about the Firefox 3.0 browser in advance of its release next month. I sat down this morning to
talk about Firefox and the browser market in general with Mozilla's Mike Beltzner, whose title is "phenomenologist," and Vlad Vukicevic, a Mozilla
"infrastructuralist." (Give them points for creativity.)
One of the subjects we discussed was the Smart Location Bar -- a
Firefox 3.0 feature known informally as the Awesome Bar. The feature gives the browser's address bar a mechanism for letting users quickly return to
Web pages, without bookmarking them, even if they don't remember the address. As people type, the tool searches for that text in the addresses and
titles of pages that they've visited previously. It also can search tags -- keywords that users associate with a particular page.
winbeta.org - 17.05.2008Amazon to allow disabling of Kindle 2 text-to-speech
Amazon is to allow rights-holders to choose to disable the text-to-speech feature of the Kindle 2 e-book reader on a title by title basis, after the
company received criticism that the feature would help Amazon escape royalty fees. The new Kindle, which was unveiled at the start of February, is
able to read out e-books aloud. However, unlike audio books, additional royalties are not paid - something which seems to have upset the Author's
Guild according to an editorial published in the New York Times last Wednesday. Titled "The Kindle Swindle", and written by the president of the
Author's Guild, Roy Blount Jr., it argues against the Kindle's text-to-speech function. In the editorial, Mr Blount Jr.

Windows 7 could soon be powered by Jack Daniels and Smirnoff Vodka if the opening of a new Spitfire bar on campus attracts thirsty Windows team
members. Todd Bishop first revealed the plans to setup a bar on Microsoft's Redmond campus a month ago and now Reymond Chen, Shell developer for
the Windows Team, has revealed employees are now playing the name game to name the bar, albeit un-officially. When we questioned Chen on what Aero
Shake was at Microsoft's PDC conference he denied any knowledge of the feature and claimed, with the assistance of his Microsoft colleagues, that
Microsoft could be building a nuclear missile into Windows 7.

pcworld.com - 07.09.2005The future of the Firefox address bar
Rafe Needleman: I had an interesting discussion today about Firefox with Mozilla's
Mike Schroepfer and Mike Beltzner. One of the things we drilled into a bit was the address bar in Firefox 3 (download). It's being called the "awesome bar" at Mozilla, and while
it will end up with an official name eventually (the "smart location bar"), what it does for users can fairly be described as awesome. And as it's
probably the most important touchpoint in the browser, it's worth exploring not just what it means for users but for Mozilla as well.

winbeta.org - 15.05.2008Google's "Search Options" Prototype
One of the prototype search results Google is currently testing shows a Search options link in the blue results bar. When you click it, a navigation
bar expands to the left side, promising to limit results to pages created anytime, past 24 hours, past week and so on. There are also a couple
of alternative result views to enable; longer text, dates and places, images from the page, and publication date. Longer text shows snippets
beyond what Google normally displays in results. Images from the page includes little thumbnails, not unlike one of the views already available in
the Google Experimental Labs.
winbeta.org - 04.09.2008Advances in typography and text rendering in Windows 7
Steven Sinofsky: Even with the pictures and videos so commonplace on PCs, many of us spend most of our time looking at and interacting with text. Yet
few of us stop to think about the depth of technology required to render text well and that this is an area that continues to benefit from improved
technology in displays, graphics cards, as well as the APIs available to developers. In Windows 7, The support for text and fonts in GDI continues to
provide the foundation for compatibility and application support. Building on the foundation of the modern DirectX graphics infrastructure, Windows 7
enhances the text output available to developers with DirectWrite. This is a new API subsystem and one that over time you will see adopted more
broadly by applications from Microsoft, independent software developers, and within Windows itself. This post will also talk about improvements to
ClearType and the Fonts, both available as part of the improvements to the GDI-based text APIs.

betanews.com - 05.12.2006Microsoft Tag adds customization
Remember Microsoft Tag? Microsoft's colourful form of bar codes was unveiled at the beginning of the year, providing an application you can
download to your phone to use it's camera to catch and read the code, which will contain either some text or a URL. These tags are designed to be
put on various signs, packaging and advertisements so that consumers can easily get more information. With that in mind the Tag have now enabled
custom tags, allowing you to customise your tags to help integrate them better with the design of your product or make them stand out even more.

neowin.net - 01.05.2009The truth behind the cost of text messaging
What are you currently paying for your text messaging? Is it 20 or 25 cents or are you one of the millions of users who buy a text messaging package
with your phone plan for $5 or more every month? Regardless what you pay, you're over paying. Not that this comes as a surprise to many
but the New York Times has divulged in great detail how bad your actually being ripped off. Wireless carriers have a "control channel" for sending
text messages, This channel is used for that task, in fact every time your cell phone communicates with the tower it uses the "control channel"
regardless if you text or not.

neowin.net - 29.12.2008Sears First Out Of Gates with 2D Bar Codes
Efforts to implement retail 2D bar codes are accelerating: Sears, in conjuction with vendor ScanBuy, became the first U.S. retailer to begin a public
trial that started in mid-December at a store in Marietta, Georgia. As opposed the the traditional row of black lines (a 1D barcode), 2D barcodes look
like a grid and make use of a second, vertical dimension, allowing them to store more data. What Sears hopes to do is to allow a cell phone's
digital camera "look" at a small 2D bar code on an advertisement, which launches an applet. A server interprets the bar code and the phone then
launches a Web browser and deep-links to a page on that site, typically the Web site of the advertiser.
