18.9.2006Microsoft Patches Blocked for Some Admins
Microsoft on Monday said it is working on a patch to correct an issue that has rendered some administrators using System Center Configuration Manager
(SCCM) 2007 unable to download and install last week's security updates. On Friday evening, Redmond confirmed what it called "a deployment issue
affecting customers using System Center Configuration Manager 2007 servers with Systems Management Services
2003."
"Our initial
investigation has shown the issue only affects Configuration Manager 2007 customers; no other detection or deployment technology is affected," wrote
Christopher Budd, security response communications lead for Microsoft, in an e-mail on Friday to Redmondmag.com. "Additionally, only customers who
are running Configuration Manager 2007 servers with SMS 2003 clients are affected."
Once dubbed Systems Management Server, SCCM helps
corral components and settings for system administrators who maintain large groups of Windows-based machines. Among the program's chief attributes
is that it enables administrators at a given enterprise to perform patch management, software distribution and operating system deployment in addition
to keeping track of hardware and software inventory. In response to user complaints, on Friday Redmond issued Security Advisory (954474), which offers guidance to
clients and channel partners running the program.

Deploying Windows in a Virtual World
Matt Graven: Virtualization is an
important technology that most every infrastructure should be taking advantage of. It reduces hardware dependence by essentially creating a hardware
abstraction layer. But while the deployment of virtual systems doesn't have to be different than the deployment of physical systems, there are some
good reasons for why you should make it different.
In the December installment of "The Desktop Files", Wes Miller
explains how to set up virtualization in your
organization, how to avoid the most common pitfalls, and how to deploy virtualization across a number of machines in your environment.
You'll learn how to use Sysprep, efficiently manage drivers, and gracefully handle unique values such as MAC addresses.

Microsoft Releases WGA Bypass Tool to OEMs
With the introduction of
Windows Genuine Advantage
(WGA), a computer must be
validated as genuine prior to
receiving security patches
from Windows Update. Windows
must first be activated for
the validation tool to run,
however most system builders
do not activate computers on
behalf of the end user. This
poses a problem for system
builders who want to sell
systems pre-patched with
updates but not enable
automatic updates.
The System
Builder Bypass tool
(sbbypass.exe) will allow
system builders to download
and install critical updates
on new PCs without the
requirement to activate or
validate. Download the System
Builder Bypass tool. Need to
be member of OEM system
builder site.
The
System Builder Bypass tool is
to be used to assist system
builders with building a new
PC, and thus requires sysprep
to be running in factory mode.
An internet connection is
required to download critical
updates.

- Prepare Windows for duplication from one computer to another computer.
- Change security identifiers (SIDs) and other system and
configuration settings to make them unique.
- Configure user-specific information to be customized by the end-user when Windows starts the
first time.
- Create images of operating systems.
- Duplicate disks.
- Automate the Windows mini-Setup program.
- Perform
auditing tasks.

Office 2007 SP1 Update Availability Clarification
Bobbie Harder: Posting this as I've noted just a little bit of confusion with how Office 2007 SP1 is made available for download after it's release
yesterday. As you know, Office 2007 SP1 was released yesterday to Microsoft Update, and to WSUS as part of the Tues, Dec 11th release.
As planned, Office 2007 SP1 was not pushed via Automatic Updates. There has been some confusion where Windows Vista customers are seeing
Office 2007 SP1 listed as available with an option to install in their Windows Update control panel applet. The new Vista experience of the Windows
Update applet combines the convenience of the Microsoft Update site, by isting all applicable available updates, and the best of the Automatic
Updates behavior. This allows users to specify what update types they want to automatically download and install (and when), as well as combines the
interactive experience of the Microsoft Update site.
winbeta.org - 13.12.2007
Using the Microsoft Update Catalog Site with System Center Configuration Manager
The Microsoft Update Catalog site can be used with System Center Configuration
Manager 2007 to deploy updates that are not automatically synchronized with WSUS. For example drivers, QFEs, or other optional updates can be
downloaded from the site (more info here). This
is a great additional capability, but how exactly can you make it work with SCCM?

Business Desktop Deployment 2007 Update Rollup Released
Microsoft has released an
update rollup for the
Microsoft Solution Accelerator
for Business
Desktop Deployment (BDD)
2007. The update rollup
supports Windows Vista and
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional. The update
includes all updates to BDD
2007 since the release version
of January 2007.
Issues that are fixed in
the update rollup:
- When
you try to use BDD 2007 to
back up a computer, the backup
is not saved to the hard disk.
This problem may occur if the
ComputerBackupLocation line is
not set to a value in the
CustomSettings.ini file. By
default, this line is blank.
- When you use the BDD
2007 Workbench to package
hotfixes and updates for
deployment to computers on the
network, not every hotfix is
installed.
- When you use
BDD 2007 in a 64-bit operating
system to configure a 32-bit
deployment point, the 64-bit
versions of some files are
copied to the deployment
point.
and much
more...

the complete list of fixes.
