EXCLUSIVE: New security flaw in IE

A new flaw in Internet Explorer could be exploited to launch spoof-based attacks, or access and change data on vulnerable PCs, security experts have warned.

The problem lies in the way Microsoft has implemented a JavaScript component in its Web browser, security researcher Amit Klein wrote in a research document. Internet Explorer does not validate some data fields provided by a PC when the component, called XmlHttpRequest, is used, he wrote.

Another security hole found in IE

Secunia published an advisory on Tuesday stating that an error could be exploited to fake the address bar in a browser window. This tactic could be used in phishing scams that attempt to trick people into believing they are on a legitimate site, when in fact they are viewing a fraudulent Web page. Phishing is a prevalent type of online scam that seeks to pilfer personal information from unsuspecting Internet users. The scams typically combine spam e-mail with fraudulent Web sites that appear to come from a trusted source, such as a credit card company or a bank.

Windows Vista's new security features

Microsoft's new operating system won't be out until late 2006, but here's a look at some of the new security features expected.

It seems that every time I sit down with Microsoft to discuss Windows Vista, something has been changed or added, which is good. In some cases, something has been removed, which is bad. One and a half years from launch, I understand that beta code changes frequently. Here's my standard disclaimer: the following article is based on the last build from Microsoft, Windows Vista build 5219, released September 2005.

Sundance Strikes iTunes Film Deal

It turns out Apple is not only interested in movies and TV shows but film festivals as well; take the Sundance Film Festival as an example. Festival films, 33 of 71 to be exact, will be sold through the iTunes store for $1.99 (£1) beginning January 22. The festival, which takes place in Park City, Utah and debuts January 18, will also stream the films on their web site for three months, free of charge. Filmmakers will get the bulk of the download price, while Apple, the Sundance Institute and cable television's Sundance Channel will split the remainder. Mr Cooper said a few more films will be shown just on the website but full-length festival films will not be offered.

"Streaming on our site is not the same as owning, and there seems to be a world out there for both. What Sundance is really known for is as a platform for people to sell their films, and that's mainly the feature film. We didn't want to really interfere with that yet," said John Cooper of the Sundance Institute.

The Director of Microsoft's Genuine Windows team, Alex Kochis, stated in his post that, "During installation, you'll be asked to validate Windows running on your PC to make sure that it's genuine." Windows validation is by no means a new technology, and has been implemented in many of Microsoft's software packages with a few notable exceptions: Internet Explorer 8, for example, and Windows Update which allows users running pirated copies of Windows to download essential security patches without validation.

Security experts claim malvertising must be tackled

Security experts have called for Internet companies to do more to tackle the growing threat of "malvertising", the practice of placing fake adverts on a website to convince visitors to download malware, according to the Guardian. Earlier this month, the New York Times website displayed such an advert, which claimed to have found a virus on the visitor's computer, before persuading them to go to a website to download the malware under the guise of "anti-virus" software. According to the New York Times, the advertiser was thought to be a legitimate company and indeed displayed legit adverts for a week, before externally changing it to a malware advert over the weekend.

Apple Dismisses Safari Download Issue

A security researcher has published a demonstration exploit that takes advantage of the download mechanism in Apple's Safari browser to automatically download files onto a user's system. bNevertheless, Apple said it does not consider the issue a security vulnerability, according to Nitesh Dhanjani, a researcher who currently leads application security efforts at professional services company Ernst & Young.

Enterprises have begun paying closer attention to Safari in recent weeks because of a rise in the browser's market share on Windows. Safari is the built-in browser on Mac OS X. The problem arises "because the Safari browser cannot be configured to obtain the user's permission before it downloads a resource," Dhanjani said in a recent blog post.
