14.01.2009Office 14 to be named Microsoft Office System 2009?
Microsoft is currently developing the successor to Office 2007, Office codenamed "14". There has been little to no information on the upcoming
Office version and many have speculated we might not see the product until 2010. Microsoft failed to provide any solid information at last years PDC,
choosing to focus on its Office Live offerings. Eagled eyed Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman has spotted what appears to be an
internal software roadmap from Microsoft. The roadmap reveals a milestone of year end 2009 but the dates aren't very clear: In the roadmap you
can see that Office 14 is clearly identified as Microsoft Office System 2009.

Despite Windows 7's release looming over the horizon, ZDNet has stated that Steve Ballmer himself said, "Office 14 will not be this year," in an

could possibly be named on release. Many people thought that Microsoft would time the new Office revision along with Windows 7's release, as many
businesses prefer to upgrade to a new OS and a new Office suite at the same time, but Ballmer has dashed all thoughts of this happening.

Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman sends word that he has discovered an early concept Office 14 screenshot from a PowerPoint

is a set of tools developed for the needs of those creating educational content. Stephen says he "noticed that instead of the Office logo in the orb,
there's a 'G' to obviously signify Grava, so does this mean we're looking at a standalone Grava application or a conceptual idea for
how the interface of Office might change to signify the user is currently using Grava?

'Office 14' to be more Web-friendly, Gates says
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates talked publicly for the first time on Monday about the next big Office release, code-named Office 14, which he said will
give users new ways to access their applications online.
Microsoft won't provide the full functionality of Office online, but it
will offer limited capabilities to view and edit the data in Office applications. It already does this for its Outlook e-mail client with a product
called Outlook Web Access, and it will offer similar capabilities for other applications in Office 14, Gates said in a speech at the Microsoft Office
System Developer Conference in San Jose, California.
"Outlook Web Access is not the full version of Office, but if you want to
go into a kiosk or an Internet cafe and browse and connect, it gives you plenty of functionality," he said. "As we look at all the modules , we have in mind the equivalent of Outlook Web Access," Gates said.

First Look: Office 14 for Web
Wouldn't it be cool if all the Office applications worked online, cross-browser from anywhere with AJAX and/or Silverlight? Or maybe even from your

because all of the above is going to be a part of the next Office Suite.

Sources: Windows 7 and Office 14 dual launch not likely
Though Microsoft released Office 2007 and Windows Vista at the same time, people should not expect the same of Windows 7 and the next version of

Sources who follow Microsoft closely said that while they expect Windows 7 to be in full release

Confirmed: Office 2010 will be 32-bit and 64-bit
Recently Neowin reported that Office 14 (or Office 2010, you choose) will most likely be shipping in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors. Well, as Ars
Technica is reporting, this is fully confirmed by Microsoft themselves. According to Ars Technica, an email exchange between them and a Microsoft
spokesperson revealed that, "Yes, Office will have two separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Office 2010 will be the first to do this." This means
that from now on, those running 64-bit versions of Windows will not longer have to emulate a 32-bit environment to have a working Office; it'll be
fully compatible, with all the benefits 64-bit brings.

Microsoft Office to Skip
Version 13
Microsoft already talks about
Microsoft Office 14, and is
most likely going to skip
version 13 of the product, for
purely superstitious matters.
This "version
14" will apparently contain
the "Roles Wizard"
functionality previously
announced for Office 2007, but
that was later cut from the
product.
"Following up comments
he made at Software 2006 a few
months ago, Microsoft
Enterprise & Partner VP Simon
Witts told CRN recently that
there is a "clear desire" is
to go to a more role-based
version of Office. So there
might be an Office 14 version
for sales people, for example,
he said.
Witts
might address this more at his
Thursday morning keynote at
the Worldwide Partner
Conference. Or not.
While a reactionary
might fear this will lead to
even more frightful Office SKU
explosion, that will not
likely be the case. Sources
say the Office group has long
considered and worked on a
"role wizard" which would
expose the application
features that you're most
likely to use in your given
role. "

Add-ins for Office 14
Andrew Whitechapel: Following on from my previous post, it should be clear that we've designed the VSTO Office add-in support to be optimally useful across multiple different
Office host applications and spanning multiple Office versions.
To be very clear, let me reiterate: we cannot support something
we have not tested. We have not tested support for currently unsupported Office applications such as Access. And, we clearly cannot test future
versions of Office. That said, my assertion that VSTO add-ins are a long-term strategic option can be backed up by the ease with which it could be
extended to support future versions of Office. This is invaluable in prototyping and proof-of-concept scenarios. For example, how could I build a VSTO
add-in with VS 2008 (released November 2007) for Office 14 (not yet released)?

Office 14 to ship in 32-bit and 64-bit flavors
Beta releases have become a great way to discover potentialy unannounced products by snooping around in the files that accompany the beta. Ed Bott
did said snooping and is now claiming that Office 14 will ship in 32-bit and 64-bit flavors. Located within the Migwiz.xml file shows the code
extensions that prove that a 64-bit version does exist. This is great news for users that can take advantage of the 64-bit flavor and should come
as welcomed news that Microsoft is expanding support for 64-bit. One day soon we will hopefully be able to drop 32-bit forever.
