Exclusive: Microsoft's new Anti-Virus, 'Morro', revealed

Ever since Microsoft discontinued its "OneCare" Anti-Virus suite, gossip has been flying that Microsoft would be releasing a free Anti-Virus\Anti-Spyware tool codenamed "Morro". The software product, codenamed "Morro" after a beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is already being tested by Microsoft employees and a trial version will be made available "soon". Microsoft has stated that Morro would be available by the end of 2009 at the latest. "Morro" is likely to be targeted to compete with the low end of anti-virus products from other providers, and it will not have much of an impact on sales of full-blown security suites.

Built on Microsoft's "award-winning malware protection engine", Morro will definitely create a storm with it's price tag, and hopefully will deliver. In light of this announcement, Microsoft have also announced that subscriptions to it's Windows Live OneCare subscription will be discontinued to new users effective June 30th 2009.

Still more questions than answers about Microsoft Morro

Mary Jo Foley: Microsoft’s announcement this week of plans for a new, free antimalware service and the end of life of its Windows Live OneCare product has spawned a bunch of new questions among customers, partners and industry watchers.

While Windows Live OneCare was no barn burner, in terms of marketshare, Microsoft typically gives its products/services at least three releases before killing them. And the 3.0 release of OneCare was imminent in fact, the Microsoft Update team blogged at the end of October that customers should expect to see it soon.

Microsoft Security Essentials (aka. "Morro") Leaked; Put under the scope

Yesterday, the first screenshots of Microsoft's "Morro" Anti-Virus software leaked to the web, and today, the whole application followed suit.

With a UI similar to that of Windows Defender, Microsoft Security Essentials (aka. "Morro") is Microsoft's upcoming free Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware solution, based on the core of Microsoft's current paid solution, OneCare. Windows Live OneCare subscribers will find their subscriptions expiring on June 30th this year, with MSE's final release anticipated shortly after.

I decided to take the opportunity today to gather some basic performance statistics on Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) including what kind of impact it has on system performance. I installed MSE on my own system with the following specifications:

I analyzed the total boot time, from the moment the boot screen appears to the moment the desktop finishes loading, shut down time, total system memory usage and total disk usage. Here are the results:

Before Installation:

After Installation:

If that wasn't enough to impress, MSE took only a mere 25 seconds to install. It is quite clear from these results that MSE has very little impact on system performance and only takes up roughly 170MB of disk space once fully updated, which is more than reasonable compared to other security software.

A few notes about these results however. First and foremost, this is still pre-release software. MSE's impact on system performance may differ in the final release, and these results should not be used to judge the final product. Second, the memory usage results are based on a system with 8GB of RAM. Applications are designed to allocate more memory on systems with more RAM, therefore it is more important to look at the percentage of RAM used and not the total amount, as the results will vary on systems with less RAM. Finally, all of these tests were performed on a system with a Solid State Drive, which are still fairly uncommon in most systems today, and the timing may differ on systems with Hard Disk Drives.

All in all though, so far, MSE is showing the signs of a true competitor. Of course, nothing can really be said until the scanning engine is put to the test.

Microsoft preparing to release free anti-virus software

According to Reuters, Microsoft is getting set to release free anti-virus software for Windows to compete with the likes of Symantec and McAfee. The software product, codenamed "Morro" after a beach in Sao Paolo, Brazil, is already being tested by Microsoft employees and a trial version will be made available "soon". Although it is difficult to gauge the effects this move by Microsoft will have over the long term, the announcement appears to have contributed to a recent 0.5% decline in Symantec shares and a 1.3% drop in McAfee shares, while Microsoft's stock price has risen 2.1%.

OneCare Was Not a Failure, Microsoft Exec Says

Critics asserting that Windows Live OneCare didn't succeed on its own have got it wrong, according to Microsoft's chief security advisor for the EMEA region. Roger Halbheer, in a blog posting on Monday, said it was "nonsense" for anyone to suggest that Microsoft's consumer antimalware security solution had somehow "failed." Last month, Microsoft announced that it planned to discontinue OneCare while simultaneously saying it would offer a free anti malware solution code-named "Morro." OneCare is priced at $49.95 per year, but Halbheer noted that many people just cannot afford the extra amount, especially in newer and arguably poorer markets.

Will Microsoft's antivirus move draw antitrust fire?

Microsoft's decision to drop the price of its antivirus software to zero puts rivals such as McAfee and Symantec in a tough position.

To be sure, those two--and other rivals--will be able to tout products that offer a broader range of features than Microsoft plans to deliver with "Morro" next year. At the same time, free is a tough price to compete against.
