Download Free Far Cry today

Ubisoft decided to release free versions of Far Cry, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Rayman Raving Rabbids.

Out of these three games, Far Cry is the most well known one. The game appeared from nowhere - actually, from German studio ran by Turkish brothers- and single-handedly wiped out launch effects of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. This is the game that surprised the market, and with later appearance of 64-bit enhancements and graphical tweaks, this game still looks rather actual. This was also the very first title to offer HDR (High Dynamic Range) - in a form of manual controls.

We have spotted free games for download on File Planet, but were quite sure youll see them on other download sites. During the writing of this story, more than 1500 users downloaded the game (it grew from 10084 to 11659), and were sure once the news gets across, there will be thousands of people in line to download this brilliant game. As far as other two games go, we would recommend both if youre in for some sheer summer gaming fun.

As always, there is a catch: these three titles are ad-supported, but we were not able to see the ads in-game while using this downloaded client. Were downloading Prince of Persia and Rayman right now.

We're not sure if this ad-spotting version of the game is compatible with those nice 64-bit upgrades AMD offered quite some time ago. Regardless of that, this experiment will show Ubisoft there is a point in releasing older titles for free or not.

Steam vs. Microsoft Live... Fight!

If anyone stands a chance against Microsoft's pay-to-play Games For Windows Live service, it's Valve's Steam. Turns out the gloves come off in just a few weeks.

Starting in July, Valve plans to offer a free update that adds social networking services like personal pages and gamer profiles, groups, game scheduling, the option to see who's played what games (or with whom), and both voice and text-based chat. The services work across all existing titles, old or new. And for all that, you'll only have to pay? Absolutely nothing.

Microsoft Live currently has Halo 2 and Shadowrun, the former an oldie (if goodie), the latter a middling multiplayer-only shooter. Steam has Half-Life, Half-Life 2 (plus all the upcoming episodes), Medieval 2: Total War, Trackmania, Civilization 4, Hitman: Blood Money, Sid Meier's Pirates, Counter-Strike, Geometry Wars, Sam & Max, The Movies, DEFCON, and several dozen more critically well-received games...

Over half of adults play video games

According to a survey released on Sunday by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, over half of American adults play video games of some kind. The survey shows that age is the biggest factor, with young adults most likely to play video games and that as adults get older, game play decreases. Of adults over the age of 65 who play video games, nearly a third play video games every day. In comparison, the survey found that only 20% of young adults play video games every day. A persons age is also a factor in whether they play on a computer, games console or other device, such as a mobile phone.

Microsoft's greatest marketing site/time waster since minesweeper

Silverlight may be Microsoft's new media platform, but with their latest video game campaign they're not showing it with a new marketing site that runs using Adobe's Flash. It's part of a massive campaign to get people to buy the third game in the Halo series, but even if you're not a video game fanatic, or familiar with it, the site is really worth taking for a spin. It revolves (literally) around a massive diorama of some intense futuristic battle. You're given control to roam back and forth using your mouse and arrow keys, and at various points even stop where you are and move freely around in a 360 degree mode. There's also an autoplay button, that will let you sit back and just watch.

Along your way around the battlefield you'll find all sorts of things to click on, including images, text snippets, and videos. Each of them is highlighted in blue, and when clicked on, provides a download link for a related full-size desktop wallpaper or other media item.

The real draw however, is the scale of this thing. While the diorama might only be a few feet wide in real life, flying around an inch above the ground creates this really neat effect that's half Matrix, half this-is-what-it's-like-to-be-an-NFL-football-that-just-got-thrown-for-80-yards.

Microsoft: XP SP3 won't arrive until '07

Aiming to keep its focus on Windows Vista, Microsoft is now targeting 2007 for its next Windows XP service pack update.

In a posting to its life cycle Web site, Microsoft set a preliminary date of the second half of next year for the release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 for both home and professional editions. That puts its debut well past the arrival of Vista, which is slated for the second half of this year and later than both outsiders and some insiders had originally predicted.

"We will be releasing another service pack for XP over the course of the product life cycle, and we are tentatively targeting the second half of 2007 for release," a Microsoft representative said in an e-mail to CNET News.com. "However, right now our priority is Windows Vista--we'll have more information to share about the next service pack for XP after Windows Vista ships." ..

Carmack shuns dedicated PPU cards

John Carmack has spoken out on the subject of dedicated PPUs, stating that "I'm not a believer."

He believes that multi-core CPUs are a much better proposition for developers wanting to do physics calculations as their adoption is becoming more widespread.

Carmack is another big name in the world of game developers that has turned away from Ageia's PhysX in favour of multi-core CPUs. Valve Software's Half-Life 2: Episode Two and Crytek's Crysis both do advanced physics calculations across CPU cores, and Remedy's Alan Wake is another game that will make great use of the CPU for physics calculations...

Sony delays 'Home' virtual world for PS3

In yet another embarrassing delay for Sony, the company is delaying the launch of its "Home" virtual world for the PlayStation 3, initially planned for later this year, until next spring.

The announcement Thursday came from Kazuo Hirai in his first major public appearance as the new chief executive of Sony Corp.'s video game business, Sony Computer Entertainment.

"We wanted to wait until we could offer what would be totally satisfying for consumers," Hirai said in a keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show, an annual event where game machines and new software are shown.

"Home" is a real-time interactive online world much like Linden Lab's "Second Life" and other so-called "metaverse," except it's designed for PlayStation 3, Sony's newest home console.

Millions of people now enter "Second Life" on personal computers, moving avatars or computer graphics images of themselves in a virtual universe...

Over Half of Second Life users come from Europe

Research firm comScore has found that throughout March, 61% of active Second Life residents were from Europe, compared to 19% from North America and 13% from Asia Pacific. Germany had the most Second Life residents, at 16% of the total, beating France's 8% and UK's 6%. Approximately 1.3 million people ran the official software and logged in to Second Life in March, representing an increase of 46% in the number of active 'residents' from January. ComScore also reported that 61% of residents are male and 39% are female. Secondlife.com was visited by 3.6 million worldwide visitors aged 15 and older during March, up 17% from February and up 46% from January.

" With nearly 800,000 active residents in Europe, Second Life is proving to be popular on an international scale. It's especially fascinating to note that the number of active German residents exceeds the number of active residents in the entire US. It is little wonder that bricks and mortar businesses are seeing Second Life as a virtual-world way of accessing a real-world customer base ," said Bob Ivins, managing director of comScore Europe.
