Under the hood, a quick look at browser engines

For the better part of the last 10 years, browsing the Internet for most meant using Internet Explorer. However, the recent release of Google Chrome as well as the continued popularity of Firefox, Safari and Opera have given users unprecedented choice in what software to use. But, most users don't know much about the engines and technology that actually powers their particular web browser.

Without an engine, all you'd see when you visited Neowin.net, or any other website, would be the raw HTML, CSS, and javascript that our developers use to create the site. Sure, you'd also be able to find the content hidden deep within all those tags and instructions, but not in a pleasing format and without any multimedia enhancements. The browser's engine is what takes all of that code and renders the information for you, on the fly.

Today, most of the Internet is rendered by four main browser engines. Trident, Gecko, WebKit and Presto. Neowin takes you under the hood and gives you an unbiased (but brief) overview of these engines, where they came from and who's using them.

EU data privacy adviser widens Google probe to all search engines

A European Union probe triggered by concerns over how long Google stores user information has widened to include all Internet search engines.

The EU's panel of national data protection officers said it's now concerned over the retention of data that the companies use to deliver more relevant search results and advertising. Some fear the data could be targeted by hackers and governments.

"The Working Party will deal with search engines in general and scrutinize their activities from a data-protection point of view, because this issue affects an ever-growing number of users," it said in a statement Thursday...

Europeans warn search engines: Delete user data sooner

A European Commission advisory body has suggested that search companies delete data collected about their users after six months -- a far cry from what most companies currently do. The recommendation arrived in a 29-page "opinion" (PDF) published Friday by a European Commission body known as the Article 29 Working Party. Backed by privacy groups, it has been pressuring Internet companies on the search data front for months. The report focused on advertising-supported search engines, as opposed to search functions embedded in Web sites.

The Working Party's suggestions don't officially have the force of law yet, but they are expected to be adopted by the EC. The EC already adopted a broader set of data protection laws a decade ago, but this report was meant to address specifically how search engines, including those headquartered outside its borders, fit into that setup.

Privacy in search engines is critical because "an individual's search history contains a footprint of that person's interests, relations, and intentions," which can then be mined by businesses and national security operatives alike, the working party wrote.

Social Search Engines: An Inside Look with ChaCha

Social searching is a relatively new idea that gives search engines a special twist. While many search engines will constantly spew out irrelevant information, spam links, and other unwanted results, social searching aims to remove this problem. The idea behind social searching is that instead of a machine automatically finding and displaying results that it thinks are relevant, a human guide separates nonsense results from real results and you see only the results deemed most relevant to your query. A live chat with the guide allows you to specify your search without having to know special syntaxes and keywords that a computer understands.

In this article, I've taken an inside look from ChaCha , a promising new social search engine. With a growing amount of guides every day, the ChaCha search engine provides users with a new way to get online information. This article documents my first visit to ChaCha: researching social search engines. My research has led me to an unintentional interview with a ChaCha guide.

The overall ChaCha experience is quite amazing. The guide assigned to my query provided me with four related links (and asked if I'd like more). One proved to be irrelevant, but it didn't make a difference in this case. Why? Speaking to the guide through an online instant messaging interface, I was provided with information about social searching, more specifically ChaCha, that no search results could ever provide. I can say that I am throughly satisfied with ChaCha.

Read more on the comments page for the full chat with YvonneD, my guide, and the four links provided.

Search startup ready to challenge Google

The dozens of entrepreneurs gathered for an exclusive high-tech conference here Monday all hope to dazzle the crowd with their ingenuity.

But one startup, Powerset, is pursuing a particularly challenging goal: It's aiming to outshine the Internet's brightest star with a new search engine built to outsmart Google.

After nearly two years of hushed development, Powerset is finally providing a peek at a "natural-language" technology that is supposed to make it easier to communicate with search engines.

Powerset's algorithms are programmed to understand search requests submitted in plain English, a change from the "keyword" system used by Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and the owners of the other leading engines...

Search becomes No. 2 Web activity

Using a search engine is now the No. 2 activity for Web users, research has found.

The report also found that reading the news is now the third most popular Web activity.

According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, the number of U.S. Web users taking advantage of search engines has risen sharply since mid-2004--from 30 percent of the U.S. Web population in July 2004 to its current level of 41 percent, which translates to some 59 million Americans.

The Pew project also found that those likely to spend more time on search engines tend to be in their 30s and well-off. ..

That password-protected site of yours - it ain't

It's one of the simplest hacks we've seen in a long time, and the more elite computer users have known about it for a while, but it's still kinda cool and just a little bit unnerving: A hacker has revealed a way to use Google and other search engines to gain unauthorized access to password-protected content on a dizzying number of websites.

While plenty of webmasters require their visitors to register or pay a fee before viewing certain pages, they are typically more than eager for search engine bots to see the content for free. After all, the more search engines that catalog the info, the better the chances of luring new users. But the technique, known as cloaking, has a gaping loophole: if Google and other search engines can see the content without entering a password, so can you.

Computational knowledge engines: the search engine, evolved

A new search engine, known as Wolfram|Alpha has launched. It may be improper to refer to it as a search engine, as it refers to itself as a "computational knowledge engine". The engine differs from a traditional search engine in that the goal of the engine is not only to make information accessible, but in the case of WolframAlpha, immediately computable. To perhaps give a better explanation of what WolframAlpha is, let us walk through an average searching scenario. I stumble on the website, and in the search field I decide to type my city's name, Toronto. If the website stumbled upon were Google, one would now have access to several pages referring to Toronto.

Google moves to 'universal' search

Marissa Mayer, Google Incorporated's vice president of search products and user experience, made the announcement that the search giant will make a significant push toward integrating results from a variety of its search engines. Internet search providers typically offer, in addition to their general Web search engines, a set of specialty engines that deliver only news articles, photos, local business listings, blog postings, maps and video clips. The inconvenience of having multiple search sites from one company has become apparent, not to mention the fact that many people are simply unaware of the specialty search engines beyond their main Web search sites.

Google seems to be the first to actually come to the point of correcting the issue once and for all and has begun to move towards what it calls a " universal search model ," while acknowledging it is still far from where it wants to be in this area, which is to deliver a single set of results culled from all its engines. Results of this effort will be often subtle and gradual, the company warned. As part of the effort, Google is implementing a new technical infrastructure able to handle the intensive computational tasks involved in providing integrated results. An upgrade to the results ranking mechanism is also being rolled out.

Time to pay up - News Corp, AP tell search engines

The heads of two of the worlds largest news outlets, Tom Curley from The Associated Press and Rupert Murdoch from News Corp, each spoke at a conference of 300 media representatives in Beijing this week stating that news portals like Google have earned fortunes from their articles and media without offering fair compensation to those creating the content. In his speech, Curly told the conference that "crowd-sourcing web services such as Wikipedia, YouTube and Facebook have become preferred customer destinations for breaking news, displacing websites of traditional news publishers. We content creators must quickly and decisively act to take back control of our content".

Microsoft: Silverlight content is searchable, too

Mary Jo Foley: When Adobe, Google and Yahoo announced earlier this week that content stored in its Flash file format would be more easily indexable by Google’s and Yahoo’s search engines, Microsoft was nowhere to be found.

I seemed to recall that the Redmondians and their backers, when comparing Silverlight to Flash, had touted before that Silverlight content was easily discoverable by search engines (and not just Live Search’s). Was I dreaming?

I asked Microsoft for verification and received the following statement from a company spokeswoman on July 2...

Intel Revolutionizes Gaming With Real-Time RayTracing

Take a look at the screen shots of the ray-tracing engine by Intel's Daniel Pohl and you won't have to squint to see improvements. This young gun from Intel is looking to shake up the entire game engine industry with his innovative work.

Designing game engines is a cut-throat business. Companies regularly fold after investing massive amounts of money and time to develop a proprietary engine.

Part of the problem is market saturation. You have three giants who release an engine ever couple of years--Epic, id Software, and Valve. Then you have major developers who make engines to license, such as Emergent Game Technologies who make the Gamebryo engine, used in the popular Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
