How To Reset, Remove, Clear or Reveal CMOS BIOS Security Password

There are times that we need to reset the computer’s BIOS security password. Yesterday I was at the local government technical school facility and the person who is in charge of the computer told me that they are not able to reinstall Windows because they are not able to get in the BIOS to set the boot order as it is password protected. The lecturers do not know the password as it is not set by them, but by some unknown student.

Kodak Designs New CMOS Sensor

Eastman Kodak Company revealed today in a press release that it has created the world’s first 1.4 micron, 5 megapixel device, the KAC-05020 Image Sensor. Using significantly smaller pixels, this sensor enables a higher level of resolution in small optical formats which will be especially useful in devices like cellphones: the sensor allows for full 720p video at 30fps in a quarter-inch camera. Unlike other small-pixel sensors which can produce poor images, especially under low light conditions, the 1.4 micron pixel used in the KAC-05020 is reportedly able to provide image quality that can equal or surpass what is available from current devices using larger, 1.75 micron pixel CMOS designs.

AMD, Qimonda in joint chip simulation project

Microprocessor manufacturer AMD and memory chip vendor Qimonda have launched a joint chip simulation project for 32nm CMOS and beyond.

The program, dubbed SIMKON, aims at simulation at a very early stage in the design cycle. Thus, the companies which both maintain production sites and mask making facilities in Dresden, Germany, hope to achieve significant benefits in terms of design time and cost during the design and test cycles of new chip generations. The simulation program includes modeling and simulation at the physical level and refers to materials, architectures and manufacturing processes.

With the simulations, the companies intend to define and optimize nanometer production processes in advance. AMD will use the simulation results to optimize its CMOS transistor architectures for the 32nm node and beyond. Qimonda is working in a similar direction and plans to achieve extremely planar wafer surfaces as a precondition for the manufacturing of DRAM chips with these extremely small geometries.

In addition to AMD and Qimonda, nine universities and research institutes participate in the project which in part is is funded by the German Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF) as a part of its IKT2020 research program. The ministry will spent €9 million (about $12.3 million) for the project.

Virgin rapped on broadband speeds

A complaint lodged by BT about the speeds of Virgin Media's broadband service has been upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority.

The challenge centred around its advertisement "Hate to Wait?", which ran in the national media and featured download times for songs and TV shows.

BT argued that Virgin's usage caps meant that downloads during peak times would be slower than advertised.

The ASA has agreed and ordered Virgin to make it clear that speeds will vary.

In its adjudication it said that the advert did not make it clear that customers on Virgin Media's lower speed packages would only be able to download TV shows at the speeds advertised during off-peak hours.

It ruled that Virgin Media needed to clarify that download times would be restricted during peak hours.

DisplayPort to Support Fiber Optic Cables

The industry's video display standards group, VESA, recently approved DisplayPort 1.1 as an industry standard. Now, a company called Luxtera has received the go-ahead from VESA to develop DisplayPort technologies using CMOS photonics. Luxtera is hoping that its development into the DisplayPort standard will help replace copper cables with optical ones as the medium for transferring high-bandwidth digital video signals. According to the press release: " High performance optical video interconnect based on Luxtera's CMOS Photonics technology is now possible with the addition of Hybrid Devices to the standard resulting in an improved visual user experience ."

According to Luxtera, no other currently announced or available video standard offers the advantages of DisplayPort. " Optical technology, particularly single mode technology, can most effectively address the longer reach market needs for digital signage, projectors, imaging, quiet office and digital home and support much higher performance picture quality for the end user at both short and longer distances ," said Eileen Robarge, group leader for the Luxtera DisplayPort task force. With the backing of Luxtera's technology and VESA's approval, DisplayPort seems to be on its way as the next major computer display standard.

Disney download rapped for cost and clarity

The Walt Disney Company has been censured by the UK advertising watchdog for not making clear that a childrens mobile phone game cost £5 in its advertising. Disney broke Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) rules on truthfulness and pricing and was told to change its advertising. The ASA also told the company to make sure parental consent was given for expensive game downloads.

Disney advertised two sets of games available for download to mobile phones. A complaint was made to the ASA that the cost of the games was not made clear and that the advertising was irresponsible because it appealed to children who could download the games without adult permission.

We apologise that the possibility Microsoft had made a mistake wasn't highlighted more in our article until we updated it later when it became clear. Microsoft has currently disabled all accounts that were created using the method posted.

"Keep Everything Clear of the Doors"

Ed Gibson, Chief Security Advisor at Microsoft UK: You've seen it, read it, heard it so many times you've blocked it out...routine, mundane...but instinctively you take the necessary precautions. And the idiots who think they can beat the doors for gosh sakes...some make it, most don't...when will they learn. Even though, I suspect the next time you hear this spoken over the intercom in the Underground, or read the warning label on the inside of the carriage you'll take just that extra second to really make sure everything is clear of the doors. "Why?", you ask. "Because you've just read this!" No different than the many times you've looked at your watch, and then someone else asks you what time it is; you can't remember, so you look again...

xUnit.net 1.0 Released

James Newkirk: In the 5 years since the release of NUnit 2.0, there have been millions of lines of code written using the various unit testing frameworks for .NET. About a year ago it became clear to myself and Brad Wilson that there were some very clear patterns of success (and failure) with the tools we were using for writing tests. Rather than repeating guidance about "do X" or "don't do Y", it seemed like it was the right time to reconsider the framework itself and see if we could codify some of those rules.

Additionally, the .NET framework itself has evolved a lot since its v1 release in early 2002. Being able to leverage some of the new framework features can help us write clearer tests.

<...> While any one of these reasons would not necessarily have been sufficient to create a new testing framework, the combination of them all made us want to undertake a new project: xUnit.net.

Latest biometric technology scans veins

CNET is reporting that Sony has developed a new biometric scanning technology, called 'Mofiria', that scans the veins in your finger in order to provide access to your laptop or PC. The scanner uses a CMOS sensor to capture scattered light within the finger veins, and compresses the date to allow it to be stored on laptops, or even cellphones. There are many benefits to this new method, claims Sony. Firstly, this technology claims a high accuracy rate, with less than 0.1% false identification. Secondly, it takes a lot less time to scan the finger; it takes 0.015 seconds to scan on a computer CPU, and 0.25 seconds on a mobile phone CPU.

We are currently awaiting a response from Microsoft and will update shortly.

Update: Microsoft have now pulled the download but the keys remain. Updated with screenshot of what was. A Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that Vista has not yet RTM'd but is unable to explain the odd appearance of Vista Enterprise.
