Microsoft should never have abandoned the original "Wow" Windows Vista marketing campaign. It brought
new meaning to the term "marketing blitz." The campaign flashed by before anybody could blink and say, "Wow." Even if Microsoft executives loathed
the ads, better to keep them than have nothing. I remain convinced that the Vista marketing campaign could have been very effective. The TV
commercials were aspirational, potentially creating positive feelings about the then-mysterious Windows Vista.

Want a serious performance boost in BioShock? Play it on DirectX 9. Sad, but true. As DirectX 9/10 hybrid games have trickled to market, we've been
testing them to see whether the newer, Vista-only API library is worth its salt. We've done it with Company of Heroes, Lost Planet, and more. In
every case, DirectX 9 performance was far better than that of DirectX 10.
Add another game to the pile. Using FRAPS to measure
frame rates, we've discovered that BioShock plays much more smoothly on DirectX 9. We ran the informal test on a Vista machine with an AMD ATI Radeon
HD 2900 XT graphics card, an Intel QX6700 CPU overclocked to 3.19 GHz, and 4GB of memory.
Playing through five very similar
minutes of the game with FRAPS and timing the frames per second, we shot up a batch of splicers in DX10 and then in DX9, with all other settings being
equal (high quality defaults at 1680x1050). In DirectX 10, FRAPS showed an average of 61.658 fps; in DirectX 9, the average was 80.300 fps.
The game looks pretty much the same in either mode. You certainly don't notice a difference in graphical splendor when you're running
breakneck through the Rapture, dodging grenades thrown by splicers while looking for the telekinesis upgrade.
While we continue
to wait for a game built upon DirectX 10 from the ground up to wow us with its performance, evidence mounts that DirectX 10 just isn't all it's
cracked up to be compared with its predecessor.

Apple finally pushed out its 10.5.6 update for customers running Leopard today.
The update includes the usual system stability, security
and performance enhancements, as well as supposed graphics enhancements for a better gaming experience.
As always, users on various Mac
enthusiast communities are reporting that the update has made their systems feel a little "snappier", but truth be told, the same thing is said for
almost all software updates at first (
almost all ), so we'll leave the judging up to you.

As some of you may or may
not know, Computer Gaming
World is dead. November's
issue of CGW is the last issue
ever for the magazine, at
least with that name. In
December's issue, the
magazine relaunches with the
new super cool name of
Games for Windows: The
Official Magazine. I
posted about this story awhile
back, but I saw this and
thought, wow now that is way
cool. Seems some of the
editors decided to take the
first 100 issues of CGW and
put them in PDF format for
everyone to download and
enjoy. Now you can download
the first 100 issues and read
them all you want, but they
also have every single
magazine cover as well, though
after issue 100 obviously
there is no content besides
the cover. I do not know if
they plan on converting the
rest of the issues and
uploading them, but I assume
eventually it will
happen.
For those that have never
heard of CGW, or aren't up to
snuff with PC gaming
magazines, Computer Gaming
World was first launched back
in November 1981. Since then
they have published 268
issues, and they have seen
every change that has ever
happened in the PC gaming
industry first hand. From the
Atari to the Apple II all the
way to current super high end
rigs, they've seen it all,
and covered it all. So if you
are a fan of CGW, or if you
are just interested in the
wonderful history of PC
gaming, check the issues out.
Just be warned, if you want to
download all 100 issues, be
prepared for a rather long
read.

Sky Songs to take on iTunes
Satellite broadcaster Sky is to take on Apple's iTunes in the digital music marketplace, when it launches its new subscription-based music store
later this month. While users of the service will be limited to one album download a month, music streaming will be ad-free and unlimited. According
to the Press Association, the new service, called Sky Songs, will enable customers to download up to 1 album, or 10 songs, for a £6.49 a month
subscription fee. Although additional songs will cost 65p a track, the service will also allow ad-free streaming of music without any limitations.
The new service will also allow users to download songs for use on any MP3 player - something which iTunes does not allow.
