02.09.2009Microsoft: Volume licensees to get fewer CDs, shorter contracts
Microsoft is making a number of tweaks to its volume-licensing policies and procedures in the name of cutting complexity and reducing environmental
waste.
The changes affect those licensing Microsoft products under Enterprise Agreements, Select licenses and Open License
Agreements and will take affect over the course of the first half of Microsofts fiscal 2008 (which kicked off on July 1).
Microsoft is reducing the quantity of CDs it ships to its volume licensees by shipping to them only the most widely used software on discs. The
rest of its software will go out over electronic download from the
Microsoft
volume-licensing services Web site. The new policy will create less waste, śwhich is good for the environment,ť according to a statement from a
company spokesman.
Microsoft also has reduced the length of its volume-license contracts between 10 percent and 50 percent,
depending on the program, officials said. The company has removed all signature blocks from its volume-license forms. Instead, licensees will get a
new signature form that requires only a śsingle signature eventť with the customer.
Microsoft also is making price information
about products easier to find in its contracts by reducing the number of different price points and SKUs in its volume-license programs.

29.03.2006Sam's Tip of the Week #4 - Controlling audio in Mac OS X
The real goodies in Mac OS are the ones that aren't obvious. I'll go over some things about adjusting audio in this tip so convenient that you
will end up wondering how you lived without them.
All of these tips only work in Leopard or later except the last one which requires Snow
Leopard. There isn't much to say here, so I'll just run down with a list:
Adjust volume without the 'blip' sound - Hold down the shift
key when using the volume buttons on your keyboard. Note that there is a setting in the Sounds preference pane that is permanent.
Adjust
volume more granularly - Hold down both the Option and Shift keys while using the volume buttons on the keyboard. Instead of the volume increasing by
one "block" on the HUD, each "block" will take 4 key presses to fill or empty, giving you a much finer control.
Quickly open the Sounds
preference pane - Press any volume key on the keyboard while holding down the Option key. For Leopard users, this is the most convenient way to
change audio sources.
Change volume sources from the menu bar (Snow Leopard only) - Hold down the Option key when clicking the volume icon
in the menu bar. This lets you change the audio input and output devices and has a button to go to the Sounds preference pane.
I hope you
find this tip useful! To contact me for comments, questions or suggestions, just email me: sam -at- scj -dot- me.

During Microsoft's annual
financial analysts conference
today, the company's chief
operating officer boasted
about increases in Windows
volume licensing.
It's the "best rate

years," Kevin Turner said of
annuity licensing contracts.
He acknowledged that Windows
Vista Enterprise and MDOP
(Microsoft Desktop
Optimization Pack) were major
drivers. Both products can
only be purchased by way of
volume licensing contract. By
contrast, Windows XP
Professional and supporting
tools could be purchased
without a volume licensing
contract.
Turner said that about 42
millions PCs are covered by
volume licensing. Among
midsize businesses and
enterprise, Windows annuity
contract penetration is 19
percent, he said.
"I think it moved a point
of two." Turner said about
Windows volume licensing
increases.

percent of Windows client
revenue comes from OEMs.

07.08.2009Dolby to Turn Volume Down on Loud Commercials
Dolby. That's all I have to
say and you think of "audio"
and "surround sound".
What's that company up to
recently? Dolby Volume: a
technology that equalizes the
volume across all audio coming
out of your TV. The system
aims to deliver consistent
volume for TV channels,
programs, and commercials.
Dolby Volume models
how "humans perceive audio"
to eliminate variable loudness
in the audio stream,
automatically. Dolby claims
user intervention completely
is unnecessary (aside from the
initial setup). The system
handles up to a 30dB in
reduction or amplification.
Ars Technica mentions that
Dolby did not address what
Dolby Volume does when
explosions or other sudden
noises are meant to happen.
Dolby Volume is an
innovation on technology
already present in some
television sets, DVD players,
TiVos, and even digital music
players. Dolby claims, and
reporters at a demonstration
have confirmed, that the idea
is to adjust volume quickly
without any delay or drop in
audio quality. Although
pricing has not been released
by Dolby, the company hopes
that television makers will be
able to incorporated the
technology into their products
by the end of 2007.

19.01.2007Apple to Launch iPod with Automatic Volume Control
Listening to music non-stop has never been easier since the iPod came along. But future versions of Apple's MP3 player are to be adapted to
prevent users from playing tracks at full blast through their earphones for too long. Amid growing fears that listeners could cause irreversible
damage to their hearing - the highest setting is as loud as a chainsaw - Apple is developing an automatic volume control. A new patent reveals that
the next iPods and iPhones could automatically calculate how long a person has been listening and at what volume, before gradually reducing the sound
level. The device will also calculate the amount of "quiet time" between when the iPod is turned off and when it is restarted, allowing the volume
to be increased again to a safe level. The patent states: "Since the damaging effect on users' hearing is both gradual and cumulative, even those
users who are concerned about hearing loss may not behave in a manner that would limit or minimise such damaging effects."

24.12.2007EU is considering volume limitations on MP3 players
The European Commission is going publish plans this week that will propose to limit the volume output on MP3 players and cell phones that are capable
of playing music. The idea is that the current MP3 players and cell phones are able to play music at decibels that can do serious damage to a
listener's ear. "Campaigners say a safe listening level is below 85 decibels for 40 hours use a week, but some MP3 players play music at up to
120 decibels.

Volume Activation 2.0: Another Potential Vista Gotcha?
Windows Genuine Advantage
(WGA) isn't the only
Microsoft anti-piracy scheme
that might raise the hackles
of future Vista customers.
Volume Activation 2.0 is
worrying some Vista testers
who've had a chance to dabble
with early versions of that
technology.
Potential false positives -
Microsoft labeling legitimate
copies of Windows as
"pirated" - akin to those
which have been documented in
WGA by Windows expert Ed Bott
and others, are just one
problem business users are
anticipating with Volume
Activation 2.0. Increased
costs resulting from the
management of Volume
Activation systems is another,
they say.
For those
who've yet to hear about it,
Volume Activation is a new
digital-license activation
technology aimed at
businesses. It's part of the
larger "Software Protection
Platform" that Microsoft is
constructing to combat piracy.
In short, Microsoft is not
going to allow enterprises to
operate on an honor system,
when it comes to proving how
many copies of Windows
they've paid to license. Just
like it does with individual
Windows users, Microsoft is
going to start requiring
companies to authenticate
their new versions of Windows
within 30 days of
installing.

Intel moves into volume with
new chips
Intel has begun to
produce chips made on the
65-nanometer process, adding
an optimistic note to what has
been a somewhat tough month
for the chip
giant.
The
Santa Clara, Calif.-based
chipmaker started to produce
Presler desktop chips in
volume a few weeks ago and is
shipping them to PC makers,
said spokesman John Casey.
Presler is a dual-core
processor sporting a new
design. Computers containing
Presler will come out next
year.
Yonah, a
65-nanometer dual-core
notebook chip, will go into
volume production by the end
of the year, he added. By the
third quarter of 2006, more
chips will be produced on the
65-nanometer process than on
the 90-nanometer process, the
so-called crossover
point.
Although
chip designs and novel
transistor concepts often gain
headlines, semiconductor
producers live and die by
manufacturing and much of
Intel's success can be
attributed to relentless
advances in production. ..
