Domain Name Sells For $2.6m

A US man has sold the domain name pizza.com for $2.6m (£1.3m) - after maintaining the site for just $20 a year since 1994.

Chris Clark, 43, accepted the offer from an anonymous bidder after a week-long online auction. Mr Clark registered the domain name in 1994, when the world wide web was just starting. He had hoped that pizza.com would help to get a contract with a pizza firm for his consulting company.

He sold his business in 2000, but kept paying the $20 annual fees for maintaining the domain, which he also used to sell advertisements.

Mr Clark has admitted regretting that he did not purchase more domain names in the 1990s, when many (now) popular domain names were still available.

Google Fights Domain Name Tasting

Google Inc. announced yesterday that it would begin to take increasing measures against domain name tasting, a practice which exploits a grace period originally designed to rectify legitimate mistakes, such as registrants mistyping the domain name they are about to buy. With automation and a burgeoning online advertising market, entrepreneurs have generated big bucks by exploiting this policy to test hoards of names, keeping just the ones that turn out to generate the most revenue; unfortunately for legitimate users, these entrepreneurs can tie up millions of domain names at any given moment.

Google China: What's Up G?

What's in a name? Google has unveiled a new domain name in China at G.cn.

Google says the new domain name, which is one of the shortest in the world, is more friendly to Google's fans in China as it is easier to type and easier to remember.

This new domain name, which is designed especially for Chinese users, is probably one of the most important steps that Google has taken for localization in China. However, Google says that the original domain name Google.cn won't be canceled with the appearance of G.cn, for it still stands as a standard domain name for Google China.

Comcast rolls out domain "helper" service, with adverts

On Tuesday, internet provider Comcast announced it would be rolling out it's "Domain Helper" nationally, having trialled it before and reported great market success. The "Domain Helper" is aimed at assisting users who have mistyped website addresses by redirecting them to an "easy-to-use page with suggestions and links." That's how Comcast have described their latest service anyway. But what Comcast describe as a "Domain Helper" has been referred to as DNS hijacking by others. Like many ISPs, Comcast now redirects their customers to a search page, but what they didn't mention in their blog post were the adverts that are on the page too, leading some customers to be less than happy with the new service.
