Is Google going to make Microsoft look good?

Why do we like Google? Is it because they are the “do no evil” company? Is it because they are not Microsoft? Is it because they make our lives easier through their search, email, and other services? The fact of the matter is that a lot of people from users, to developers, to workers, and to investors like Google. Heck, even I like google! (Look at the ads.)

Google Book Search becomes more comprehensive

Google has upped the ante with an upgrade to Google Book Search that allows users to search digitized book results as well as records for millions of other books that still just exist in the analog world. When viewed, the new added book records have a summary, reviews and links to buy the book or find it in a library nearby since previews of the text are unavailable. " We're doing this because we want to offer users the most comprehensive book search in the world - whether it's a book you can read online now, preview samples, see a few snippets, or just read what others have written about the book. We're still very busy digitizing millions more books, but want to make as much discoverable as possible today ."

Frankfurt Book Fair: e-book readers gaining a foothold.

The e-book is on the rise. Last week everyone who cares about books went to the Frankfurt book fair. Three devices in particular seemed the most interesting. Here are some impressions, including snippets from two interviews. Lawrent Picard, co-founder of Bookeen, is confident that e-book technology will continue to gain momentum over the next few years. Long before Amazon launched the greatly successful Kindle, Bookeen brought out their first device in 2000. Seven years later, just three weeks before Amazon, they released another device, the Cybook Gen3. Now at the book fair they presented their latest model, the Cybook Opus. It's significantly smaller, sporting a shiny white housing with rounded edges. Mr.

Google Plots e-Book Version of iTunes

Google and some of the world's top publishers are working on a system that would allow readers to download entire books to their computers. The book would be read on the user's monitor or on mobile devices. Jens Redmer, director of Google Book Search in Europe, said: " We are working on a platform that will let publishers give readers full access to a book online ." He did not believe taking books online would mean the end of the printed word but it would give readers more options when it came to buying. Commuters in Japan are already reading entire novels on their mobile phones.

Google's main competition will be Sony, which launched its digital book device with an online book store stocking 10,000 titles, and Amazon, the world's largest online book seller, which is planning an e-book service as well. The book initiative would be part of Google's Book Search service and would make books searchable online with publishers' approval. Currently, snippets of the book are available along with links for purchasing the physical copy of the book. Major publishers such as Penguin, HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster are among those involved in the project. Google said the project was coming " sooner rather than later ".

Report: Google, Amazon plan e-book moves

Google and Amazon.com are planning moves in the electronic-book market which, despite much promise over the years, hasn't met the expectations of book lovers, The New York Times reported Thursday.

Amazon plans to launch an e-book reading device called the Kindle in October that will tap into an Amazon e-book store and cost between $400 and $500, the Times reported.

Meanwhile, Google, which has a book search engine, will give people the option of paying to obtain the full text of copyright books as part of a service due before the end of the year, according to the newspaper. Google would split the revenue from the service with book publishers.

Although e-book technology has been around for years, the concept hasn't caught on as initially expected, as people continue to prefer reading books on paper, rather than on an electronic display. ..

Google Books Text Versions

Today Google launched a new feature for Book Search to help more people access the world's great public domain works. Whenever you find an out-of-copyright book in our index, you'll see a "View plain text" link, which lets anyone access the text layer of the book.

As Dr. T.V. Raman explains on the main Google blog, this opens the book to adaptive technologies such as screen readers and Braille display, allowing visually impaired users to read these books just as easily as users with sight.

This is an exciting step for us in our mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. To learn more about Google's efforts to make books and other digitized content more accessible to everyone, check out Dr. Raman's full post.

What Should Apple Tackle Next?

First Apple built personal computers, then portable media players, and now the company is manufacturing cell phones. Apple also has its own branded set-top box -- Apple TV -- and its iTunes store is one of the biggest e-commerce marketplaces for music and videos in the world.

What's next for Apple? What product categories might the company in Cupertino leap into? Car navigation? Video games? Or perhaps something a little closer to home, like an e-book reader or a tablet?

US DOJ urges court to reject Google's book deal

The US Department of Justice has filed its concerns over a deal between Google and several book publishers which would see the creation of what could be the world's biggest virtual library. They have urged the US District Court in New York, which is due to rule on the issue on October 7, to reject the deal in its current form but encourage further discussions. The deal would allow Google to digitize, publish and commercialize millions of books online and has already been opposed by the Open Book Alliance along with technology giants - and Google's rivals - Microsoft, Yahoo! and Amazon.

Google to compromise on book search deal

When Google announced its book deal, they were immediately criticized by many groups and corporations for its potential to give Google too much power over "orphan books". Orphan books are books where the copyright holder is unknown or the book is out of print. The biggest contention with the agreement is that this would give Google "virtually exclusive license to millions of books". Because so many groups, including the Department of Justice, have opposed the current agreement, Google is willing to compromise on its deal. The likely result is that Google will be allowed to access and scan the orphan books but will not own the rights to them.

Microsoft shuts down book search

Microsoft plans to shutter its book-scanning operation next week, the company said on Friday.

It will shut down the Live Search Books and Live Search Academic Web sites and stop scanning library and copyright books, Satya Nadella, senior vice president of search, portal and advertising
for Microsoft, wrote in a blog post .

Microsoft appears to have decided that it doesn't want to be in the business of creating digital content, instead hoping that
others will take on that task. The company will give its scanning equipment to its library and digitization partners and encourage
them to continue to scan books. "Based on our experience, we foresee that the best way for a search engine to make book content
available will be by crawling content repositories created by book publishers and libraries," Nadella wrote.
