DirectX 11 to get announced this month

Microsoft will start talking about DirectX 11 in less than two weeks. Sources have confirmed that Microsoft game technology conference, previously known as Meltdown and now renamed to Gamefest 2008, will be the place where Microsoft plans to officially announce DirectX 11.

This conference takes place on the 22 and 23 July in Seattle, Washington and it will set you back $550 if you register online. You can find some more details about the conference here.

The big feature of DirectX 11 is Tessellation/Displacement while we also heard that Multithreaded Rendering and Compute Shaders are part of it. DirectX 11 also brings Shader model 5.0 but we dont know many details about it.

It looks like DirectX 11 will stick to rasterization as there is no any mentioning of Ray tracing support.

Nvidia will also talk about DirectX 11 at its Nvision event / conference in late August 2008

Another interesting feature is the ability to perform a minimal install, which amounts to about 500MB (at mount-point '/'), which should make this release more appealing to users running servers, or machines with older hardware.

Nvidia: DirectX 11 is not important

Nvidia's Sr. Vice President, Investor Relations, Mike Hara, has played down the significance of DirectX 11 at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference. Instead, Mr. Hara insists technologies like CUDA, PhysX and Stereo 3D Vision are the future.

DirectX 11 by itself is not going be the defining reason to buy a new GPU. It will be one of the reasons. This is why Microsoft is in work with the industry to allow more freedom and more creativity in how you build content, which is always good, and the new features in DirectX 11 are going to allow people to do that. But that no longer is the only reason, we believe, consumers would want to invest in a GPU, explains Mr. Hara.

Windows Mobile 6.5 to officially launch on May 11

It seems like Windows Mobile 6.5 will be out before we know it. Microsoft previously said that they don't expect it until later in the year, but it seems they are ahead of schedule. A blog post on the Windows Mobile Team blog confirms that the 6.5 update will officially launch on May 11.

May 11 is also the first say of the Tech Ed Conference, so maybe we will see a final demo of it there. The last demo we saw of it was described as an alpha, so the gold version should be a real step forward.

Don't be too quick to update though, Microsoft decided to add extra requirements to the new update like requiring a start menu key, and others to be dedicated to the operating system. Manufacturers are also not expected to update most devices that are already out, and instead just new decides that roll out.
