14.7.2009Direct3D WARP10 to enable you to play DX10 Crysis using software renderer only, albeit slowly
Direct3D backwards compatibility has always been "you get what your graphics cards run". For example,
Crysis may be a Direct3D 10 game, but if you only have a
Direct3D 9-level graphics card, it might only make your jaws open instead of hitting the floor. But that's all going to change comes Windows 7.
Simply put, in Windows 7, you will experience the same graphics fidelity and detail whether you have a Direct3D 9-level graphics
card or even no graphics card. The magic fairy dust which makes this possible is called Direct3D 10Level9 and Direct3D WARP10 respectively...

07.08.2007SIGGRAPH: DirectX 10.1 in Windows Vista SP1 "Coming Soon"
Microsoft offered official
confirmation that DirectX 10.1
in Windows Vista SP1 can be
expected in the immediate
future. The SIGGRAPH 2007
conference is the stage where
Microsoft is presenting an
introduction to Direct3D 10,
but also the future of this
application programming
interface.
Direct3D 10 is an integer
part of the DirectX 10 API
available exclusively through
Microsoft's latest operating
system Windows Vista, in
combination with the
underlying graphics hardware.
The Redmond company has
repeatedly denied the
possibility of backporting
DirectX to Windows XP, arguing
that it would have to also
change the core of the
operating system.
Such a scenario is
also supported by the fact
that Microsoft is actually
moving forward with the
development of DirectX. The
company has released a preview
of DirectX 10.1, the API that
will be made available with
Windows Vista Service Pack 1.
And while Sinofsky's Windows
Omerta will only leak the
detail that Vista SP1 beta is
planned by the end of 2007,
Sam Glassenberg, Lead Program
Manager for the Microsoft
Direct3D Team revealed (in the
presentation slides) that
version 10.1 of Direct3D is
"coming soon."
Now, taking into
consideration that Direct3D
10.1 is intimately connected
with DirectX 10.1, which in
its turn is an integer part of
Windows Vista SP1, this means
that a public beta of the
operating system's first
service pack could be just
around the corner. Maybe just
a month, or a couple of months
away. Essentially Direct3D
10.1 is "a series of
extensions to Direct3D 10
supported on upcoming hardware
and in Windows Vista SP1,"
coming in "5 new APIs" and
is designed as an
"incremental update to D3D
10," according to
Glassenberg. (in the
presentation slides)

07.08.2007DirectX SDK December 2005 With
Direct3D 10 Tech Preview
Available
This DirectX SDK
release contains updates to
tools, utilities, samples,
Documentation, and runtime
debug files for x64 and x86
platforms. This release also
include a public pre-release
of Microsoft Cross-Platform
Audio Creation tool, Managed
Direct Code (2.0 CLR), and
Direct3D
10.
The
Direct3D 10 Technology Preview
showcases the newest set of
graphics APIs for games and
other high-performance
multimedia applications on
next-generation graphics
hardware. This technology
preview provides reference
material, conceptual content,
developer libraries, tutorials
and samples that demonstrate
how to use Direct3D 10.
Additional content will
provided in upcoming SDK
releases.
Samples
and applications built with
the Direct3D 10 December 2005
Technology Preview require the
Windows Vista December 2005
CTP to run. The Windows Vista
December 2005 CTP is available

Instan

device requires Direct3D

of the release of this
Technology Preview, such
hardware is not publicly
available. A software fallback

14.12.2005Microsoft Announces DirectX 10.1 Preview
Microsoft is making a
tech-demo version of its
upcoming DirectX 10.1
available via download,
including a version of
XAudio2, the company's
cross-platform replacement for
DirectSound.
Users
can try out both via the
468-Mbyte
version of the August 2007
DirectX SDK. There's a catch,
though: the August 2007
Direct3D 10.1 Tech Preview
requires the Windows Vista SP1
Beta which will be available
to MSDN subscribers once it is
publicly released, according
to Microsoft.
According to Microsoft,
"Direct3D 10.1 is an
incremental, side-by-side
update to Direct3D 10.0 that
provides a series of new
rendering features that will
be available in an upcoming
generation of graphics
hardware." The XAudio2
technology is also used in the
Xbox 360, and will eventually
replace DirectSound as the
PC's main audio driver,
according to Microsoft.

01.08.2007Download The Vista RC1 DirectX
10 SDK
With a lot of controversy
surrounding the upcoming RC1
release of Windows Vista (see
Should There Be Vista Beta
3?), Microsoft is already
releasing software which
requires Vista RC1 to
run.
Microsoft
has released the August
DirectX Software Development
Kit (SDK) which includes a
public pre-release of Direct
3D 10. Once again, Microsoft
has released an SDK before
releasing the platform needed
to use parts of it.
According the
Microsoft, "Samples and
applications built with the
Direct3D 10 Technology Preview
in the August 2006 DirectX SDK
require Windows Vista RC1 to
run. The Windows Vista RC1
will be available to MSDN
subscribers." While this is
great news for developers,
many are wondering when they
will actually see Windows
Vista RC1. Many Beta Testers
are still expecting another
'interim' release before RC1
is released to the public.

18.07.2008VirtualBox Gets 3D Acceleration For Linux Guests
VirtualBox, the popular virtualization software platform owned by Sun Microsystems (though Sun may soon be owned by IBM), has been reaching a number
of 3D milestones in the past few months. Back in December, Sun had introduced
OpenGL acceleration for Windows guests through a modified OpenGL driver for the
XP/Vista virtualized operating systems that would then execute the OpenGL calls through the host operating system and its driver/hardware. A month
later that support was extended to include
Direct3D
acceleration on guest operating systems (well, just Windows operating systems for DirectX) through a modified driver and using part of
WINE to translate the Direct3D calls into OpenGL. Sun Microsystems
has just released the first beta for VirtualBox 2.2 and it includes more 3D work as well. This time, virtualized Linux guests now have OpenGL 3D
acceleration support!

21.10.2005DX11 Will Be Included With 7
Despite what was talked about this week, it has been confirmed that DirectX 11 will be included with Windows 7.
Here are a few notes from
PCGH:
"One of the APIs, Direct 3D 11, has been revealed to include GPGPU, tessellation and improved multi-threading support, the latter
meaning better gaming for those who use multi-core processors. Tessellation and Shader Model 5.0 will require hardware which supports
the new
API, but for the stubborn and/or cheap folk, parts of Direct3D 11 will be supported on 9/10/10.1-class hardware."
Also, unlike the
release of DX10 relating to XP, Vista users will be able to take advantage of DX11 too, because there will also be a Vista release.
This
will most likely make DX11 more widely used than DX10 simply because it's available on more platforms.

04.09.2007Windows 7 beta download imminent?
Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It would appear from the posting that Microsoft is currently
readying site updates and download servers for the imminent release of the Windows 7 beta. Yesterday, German site Winfuture claimed that the beta
would be released today and this could confirm the sites claims. The download link is currently inaccessible. It's entirely possible that once
the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official
confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.

19.12.2008TechEd 2007: Virtualization to Become Ninth Server Core Role
At a morning session
introducing many to the
window-less Server Core
installation option in the
forthcoming Windows Server
2008, Microsoft product
manager Andrew Mason made it
official: Windows
Virtualization Services
(code-named "Viridian") will
become the ninth role
available for the trim server
option, joining Internet
Information Services 7
announced last Monday and
other common, unattended role
such as DNS server, DHCP
server, and Active Directory
Application Mode (now called
AD LDS).
This
addition may be both welcome
and extremely important for
enterprises working to create
homogeneity of services where
heterogenous (OS-specific)
applications are deployed. Now
SUSE Linux and other systems
can be hosted by servers that
don't need to waste space
managing Windows printer and
display drivers, such as
DirectX and Direct3D, when
they're not ever going to be
used there anyway.
Monday's announcement
referred to IIS7 as the
seventh Server Core role. Yes,
we're keeping count, and no,
you're not asleep. There is
indeed an eighth role, and
based on the graph we saw this
morning, Windows Media
Services is that #8 role. This
will enable an unattended
server to stream media, even
though it's not necessary for
that server to display or play
that media locally...
