The year 2005 was an excellent year, depending of course on your point of view. For the tech industry, BitTorrent soared to new heights while Steve Jobs enjoyed record breaking iPod sales. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Review
A Little History
Virtualization software is nothing new, and dates back quite some time. One of the most popular examples for the end user was Connectix Virtual PC for the Mac. Since there are a pretty huge number of programs that are only available on Windows, this created a strong market niche to let Mac users run Windows programs, even if at reduced speed.
Virtual PC for the Mac, rather than emulating Windows, emulated the x86 architecture and the requisite peripheral devices, such as a video and sound card. This meant that emulation could work quite flawlessly, but also that any user would need to purchase a copy of Windows as well and then install it onto the Virtual PC. Virtual PC was a success and Connectix later created a Windows version which let you run most x86 OSes ? something quite useful for developers, enthusiasts, and IT professionals.

06.12.2005New "Network Direct" RDMA Interface Available with Windows Server 2008
Phil Pennington: Windows HPC Server 2008 introduces a new low-latency RDMA network API known as "Network Direct". This RDMA interface in
addition to and distinct from the existing "Winsock Direct" interface. The Network Direct interface introduces several advantages over
Winsock Direct including no dependency on the Winsock stack and much lower latency metrics. MS MPI is being developed to take advantage of this
new interface.
This means that Infiniband vendors, for instance, will need to provide HCA Network Direct providers in
addition to (or perhaps instead of) the Winsock Direct providers published previously. Consequently, development is underway by both Microsoft
and partners to enable full support for the entire network stack.
For programmers, the Network Direct API provides a model
similar to the User Mode Driver Framework (UMDF). MS MPI will be the first user-mode application to leverage Network Direct.

23.01.2008Updated "Unofficial" System Requirements For Crysis
Crysis-Online
has the "unofficial" updated
minimum and recommended system
requirements for the upcoming
mega-smash hit Crytek
masterpiece Crysis. Wow,
that's a mouthful eh? Check
these out.
Minimum
Requirements
- CPU - Athlon 64
3000+/Intel 2.8 Ghz
- Video - Nvidia
6200 or Ati X1300 - Shader
Model 2.0
-
RAM - 768 MB on
Windows XP or 1 GB on Windows
Vista
- HDD - 6 GB
- Internet -
256k+
- Optical Drive -
DVD
- Software -
Direct X 9.0c with Windows
XP
Recommended
Requirements
- CPU - Dual Core
CPU - Either Athlon X2 or
Intel Pentium D
-
Video - Nvidia
7600GT or ATI X1800GTO -
Shader Model 3.0 or DX10
Equivalent
-
RAM -
1.5GB+
- HDD - 6GB
- Internet -
512k+ - 128k Upstream
- Optical Drive -
DVD
- Software -
Direct X 9.0c with Windows
XP
Also of note
from the report are a couple
of other things. Mainly that
Crysis will run on both DX9
and DX10 and on Windows Vista
and Windows XP.
A video card supporting Shader
Model 2.0 is the minimum,
period. Don't bother with
anything less. The CryEngine 2
as its called, can scale back
quite a bit, around 2 years
according to Crysis-Online,
and scale ahead around 1.5
years or so. Crysis will
utilize multi threaded CPU's
which means the game will
support Quad Core processors.
A single Geforce 7800GTX will
be able to pretty much max out
the game.
Now
remember, these are not
confirmed specs, but I
wouldn't doubt they are
pretty accurate at this point.
Time to upgrade the old PC
folks?
