Xbox plays starring role in Windows update

Microsoft on Friday is set to deliver new software that will more closely link its forthcoming Xbox 360 gaming console into the company's plans for delivering digital entertainment.
nr
The company said that as part of an update to its Media Center Edition of Windows, it will add the capability to stream digital media--music, videos, photos television and movies--from Media Center PCs to any television or device via Xbox 360. The move has been expected. Company executives discussed plans to build the software earlier this year.

Microsoft already allows customers to stream media through devices it calls Media Center Extenders, and it has in the past sold a kit to make Xbox work with Media Center PCs. But the new software will make Xbox, Microsoft's high-profile game machine, a peer in such arrangements and will for the first time include the ability to stream high-definition content. Xbox 360 consoles with special Media Center Extender technology will ship later this year, said Brad Brooks, senior director of product management in Microsoft's Windows client division...

Missing Remote has a wonderful write-up and download available to help those who have been lucky enough so far to get in to the Boxee alpha test. Boxee is a media center style application that has gained popularity for it’s ability to stream video from online sources such as Hulu and Joost. These two services provide a wealth of content including full length shows from many of the popular TV networks and even full length movies. The problem is, how do we get these great features into Windows 7 Media Center?

Soon, Media Center users will be able to stream DVDs from their PC to a Media Center Extender. This means that you can pick up an Extender that doesnt have a DVD drive, hook it up to any TV in the house, and not have to hook up anything else to get TV, DVD, music, and other Media Center applications. Previously, only Sonys super-expensive XL1B 200-disk DVD changer could do it, but now anyone should be able to just pop a DVD in the PC, and watch it anywhere in the house. Huzzah!

Mano a mano: Apple TV vs. the Xbox 360

Jonathan M. Gitlin: Previously, I looked at the Apple TV in isolation, to see how it fits
as a digital hub. Apple isn't the only company that wants to have its
device at the center of your home entertainment though, nor the only
ones who want its storefront to be the one you use to download TV and
movies. So in this next installment, I shall compare the Apple TV to
what I think will be its closest rival, the Microsoft Xbox 360.
Yes, you read that right. I am going to compare a game console with
the Apple TV, but the comparison is not as far fetched as you might think. Both have
storefronts where you can download TV episodes and movies. Both will
rent you content in both HD and SD, and both will let you stream your
own media through them to your TV and speakers.

Windows 7 Media Center Review

Engadget: We've been waiting a long time for this and it's finally here, the latest version of Windows Media Center. Well, we really stopped waiting a few months ago when the release candidate hit, but waited on composing our thoughts until after we had a chance to play with the RTM copy. For the most part, as you'd expect the RTM build is identical to the RC, sans the bugs, but there are plenty of upgrades over Vista Media Center. Many of these new features were also in the TV Pack, but in our book that doesn't count. For starters it was OEM only, and thus you could only get it (legitimately) by buying a new PC, but the real reason is because it was so buggy, it was beyond usable. In fact we still stand by the theory that the TV Pack was nothing more than an early preview for OEMs of the new guts of Windows 7 Media Center. Gladly that is all behind us now, so keep reading to find out what gets us excited about Windows 7 Media Center...

Media Streaming with Windows 7

Steven Sinofsky: Weve blogged about a number of features related to home networking and media in Windows 7. A scenario which brings all these together in a pretty cool way is Media Streaming. This scenario allows you to use a Windows 7 PC as a hub for media sharingwhere you can share media with other PCs and devices on your home network via streaming, and even stream this information securely over the internet. Scott Manchester on the Devices & Media program management team coordinated this post, but as you will see it represents work across the Core User Experience, Media Center, Networking, and even Windows Live chose to take advantage of the new APIs in this scenario. This is a pretty detailed post and theres a lot to try out. Those of you using the RC to test things out, you can always install on another PC and use it for the 30-day period without requiring a new PID key. Have fun!
